I watched Joe Washington when he was in College and even as a USC Fan I thought he was one of best backs I ever saw and that Monday Night game vs the Patriots was pure Art.
Joe W was my favorite all-time back, and I’ve seen some great ones in person, Herschel, Bo, Jamal Lewis, and lived in OKC for two years and saw Marcus D. and Mike Rozier.... but nobody could cut like Joe.... beautiful football in those days.
Just remember folks....if you witnessed Joe Washington at OU.....well, just feel blessed to have lived through it. You'll never see the likes of Little Joe or those Switzer teams again for the rest of your life.

I remember listening to the '75 OU - MIZZ game on the radio with announcer Mike Trepps, OU was down by 7 with a couple of minutes left on the clock. "Davis options right to Washington, Washington cuts back left jukes a tackler, jukes another breaks into the open the 50 - the 40 - Go Joe go - the 20 - the 10 TOUCHDOWN OKLAHOMA!!! Joe Washington has done it, Joe Washington has done it. Joe Washington has just run 74 yards for touchdown. Man was it exciting, I'll never forget it.
Thank God for UA-cam and the internet......I went to every home game from 70 through 78 as a kid & I will always remember the teams with Joe Washington. He is the best back who gets the least recognition in my opinion.

I was a freshman at OU in the fall of '74. National Championship '74 & '75. I joined the OU Ruf/Neks in '76 & '77. Silver Shoes is still the greatest of all the great running backs we have enjoyed. The 74 yard run against Missou plus the 2 point extra point for the win was one for the ages. BOOMER!

Lil Joe was voted one of the top 50 Washington Redskins of all time but what I meant about solid was he lasted in the NFL but won't be in the Hall of Fame. Trust me i've been an OU fan since 1973 and will always remember Lil Joe's run at Missouri and where I was at when it happened.

Yeah you're right Joe. Just one game we got to see, it was the week Notre Dame was idle and their television network went to Norman to watch the Sooners play Missouri if memory serves. Washington was exciting to watch and afterwards we could see why the nicknamed him Silverwheels.

Mr. Washington was a head of his day..... As an Alabama fan, big time; I was always concerned about playing against him......I knew Alabama in the 70's would have a hard time stopping that powerful offense.....
Here is a funny Joe Washington story that I heard Archie Griffin tell. Griffin and Washington came out of college the same year. Their senior year they attended a prominent sports banquet here in Columbus, Ohio. The banquet had all kinds of athletes from all kinds of sports. Two of the athletes were two junior national doubles tennis champions, who were 13y/o girls. Someone yells out, "Hey Archie, why don't you and Joe Washington play the girls in tennis?". Joe and Archie didn't want to play but got talked talked into it. The giggly girls whipped Joe and Archie's butts 6-0, 6-0, because while they were great athletes, they never played tennis before. The crowd thought Joe and Archie were tanking, the girls were the only ones who knew they were not. Griffin said the first thing he bought with his Bengals signing bonus that he didn't really need was tennis lessons.

He was a great return man as well and a good example of that is a video of lil Joe breaking 10 or so tackles on a 3 yard loss against defending 72 champion usc in september 73 in Los Angeles. Lil Joe had a solid NFL career as well with about 9,000 total yards and a Superbowl ring in about 9 years. Great 3rd down specialist and the 1st I ever remember as being such.

Joe Washington....This was the draft that featured the only 2 time Heisman winner Archie Griffin. I'm not sure when Archie Griffin was selected but Chuck Muncie and lil Joe were both running backs who were selected ahead of Griffin. A couple of years later the Colts would trade Muncie to the Chargers for Washington or vice versa. It was a good trade for both teams.

Back in the 1970s, I once heard a Nebraska player say that he hated playing OU because afterwards, he always felt like he’d been in a massive car wreck. He was a defensive lineman and said playing everyone else, he did all the hitting. But playing against OU, THEY did all the hitting. And IF you happened to avoid getting hit by the OU linemen, the OU running backs would hit you, and they would hit you every bit as hard as the OU linemen would. And about the time you figured out you had to brace yourself for the impact of someone like Billy Sims, they juke you so bad that you’d about break an ankle, leaving you tackling the air, and be embarrassed on national television.

No he win it the next year. But your point is still the same. Tony Dorsett never had a worse day and his career then he did against Oklahoma (1975). A year later in 1976 he won the Heisman. I was a student and in the stands the day we shutting down highlighted by the great flying tackle on Dorsett made by Scott Hill. It is also on UA-cam
