This region was late Romanized. It was famous for its excellent soldiers, frustrated but courageous. In Illyria (in the geographical sense) was indeed the most powerful of the Roman armies, in charge of watching over the Danube (nearly 12 legions, that is to say 130 000 men) .

The East was as much Roman as the West was. If not more, as by the time the West had falled and been barbarized, the East was still prevailing. And even when the Romans there fell as well to the Turks, they retained their identity, they did not forget it like those of the West. Eventually, revolt after revolt, they managed to free themselves in the Great Revolution of 1821, also known as the Greek War of Independence!

      @@paulmayson3129 Thats bullshit
The West wasn't more barbarized at all.At least not in the first 100 years after 476
-Odcaer and eventually the Ostorghps were Christian just like their eastern counterparts
      - They spoke Latin and to some extent Greek
-They had andvaced Goverments and such
-Most of the people in those governments weren't enslaved or tortured like other Barbarians
-The Roman Senate even kept on doing its thing
Thats such a Romaniscted way of History. That it is quite foolish

Ι did not say that the Western Roman Empire was barbarized. I said that through the centuries they eventually forgot their Romanity (or Romaness), so much that they ceased identifying as Romans. Show me an uninterrupted continuation of Roman identity in the West. Because there is in the East, and that is Greece.
Also the situation of Ostrogothic Italy is irrelevant, especiall during Odoacer's rule, because it was not the conventional barbaric germanic occupation like in Gaul and Spania. Here Odoacer sent the Western Imperial Regalia to the Roman Emperor Zeno in New Rome as a manner of acceptance, so that the latter would recognise him as King of Italy in his sake. And later Italy was liberated by the Romans, under Justinian the Great.
And why would the Romans cease to be Romans after 641? How do you draw the line, based on what criterion? How did they stop being Romans after that? Just because they were Greeks? Since when Romaness and Hellenism canceled each other? Or because they were so different from Classical Rome? But so was the Roman Kingdom.

Because it is the Modern Greeks that still preserve the Roman Identity, despite many nowadays forgetting about it. But Greece is a direct continuation of Ancient Greece and Ancient Rome, which had been fused in one Grecoroman Civilization. The Modern Greek State is also the uninterrupted continuation of the Roman State as founded by Romulus. Why? Because the Roman Kingdom, which became the Roman Republic and the Roman Empire (Principate), eventually becoming "Byzantium", which was the Medieval Roman Empire (Dominate), eventually fell and shrunk. But it did not fall completely, as there was a last free bastion, the Hegemony of Mani, which never fell to the Turks and merged with the Greek State in the Greek Revolution of 1821, which was in fact a Roman Revolution as well. The Greeks still revered their Roman Kings of old, still had a Roman Identity as they called themselves Romans (and Greeks, for them it was the same thing, which was the case), and believed their capital to be New Rome, Constantinople. They were the same Romans who had been subdued by the Turks, who were now revolting for a final time.

It is funny how both halves of the Former Roman Empire fell pretty much in the same way, succumbing to civil wars that weakened them beyond repair and left them vulnerable to other conquerors, such as the germanic tribes in the west, arabs and turks in the east. But i see the Roman Empire as a precursor, a beta version, for our society today. Rome's greatness cannot be denied, for when it was at its best, it achieved wonders. But to manage such an empire without the convenience of modern day technology is just too damn difficult. Revolts all over the place, invasions that are countered after the damage is already done, and the ones that suffer are the people. A mixture of romans and germanic people resulted in the most powerful nations of the modern world. With a rocky start, they survived. And with that, Rome survived as well. French, Italians, Spanish, Portuguese, Romanians... latins. And this only from languages derived of classical latin. But at the center of them all i see Greece, the mother of the roman culture, and the last to officially fall in 1453. i honestly would be proud to call myself roman, although it would be looked at in a weird way today :)). Romans did not disappear, they just evolved into us. Their laws evolved into our laws. Their technology is our foundation. As bloody as they were, they are my forefathers, and i thank them for their contribution to my world.

@@qdaniele97 Wrong. The Eastern Roman Empire was Rome as well as the Western one. The last days of Rome, that is, the Roman idea or the Imperium Romanum, not only the city of Rome itself, were in the spring of 1453, and the last Roman Emperor was Constantine XI, not Honorius or Romulus Augustulus. Rome never died. It simply transformed into a foundation of laws that we apply today or the republic which is by the people and for the people. For me at least, Christianity is Rome, something that lives on and still going strong in the 21st century (may it always be so). It is also a level of greatness where countless empires dreamt to achieve but never did. There were great empires, but Rome was something else, something unique. German called their emperors "Kaisers", Russians called theirs "Tsar" as something similar to Caesar as they aimed for Roman greatness with their empires, but there can only be one Roman Empire

Could Stilicho have saved the West (by drowning that idiot son-in-law, Honorius? and finishing Alaric off?) Did Justinian really overstrain the Empire or just had bad luck with plague and losing nephew Germanus and wife Theodora at crucial moments? Why did the victorious Byzantines fail at the Yarmuk after their brilliant victory over Persia? Did Basil II screw his successes by not marrying a Bulgarian princess and fathering an heir?
