- The University of Notre Dame football team improved to 3-0 in 2023 with its first road-game victory of the season at NC State 38-17 at Carter-Finley Stadium in Raleigh, North Carolina, on Saturday afternoon.
The game was delayed by weather and lightning for close to two hours with the Irish holding a 3-0 lead. The first play once the game was resumed was an 80-yard touchdown run by Audric Estimé to put Notre Dame ahead to stay. NC State cut the lead to seven points in the third quarter, but the Irish defense stepped up with three interceptions and the Irish offense capitalized on the mistakes with three straight touchdowns to put the game away.
Estimé led the Irish rushing attack with a career-high-matching 134 yards on 14 carries with two rushing touchdowns. Sam Hartman posted another great passing performance, finishing 15 of 24 for 286 yards and four touchdowns. Two of those touchdown passes ended up in the hands of sophomore tight end Holden Staes on 35 and 40-yard plays.
The Irish defense, which broke up eight passes in the game, was led by Thomas Harper with seven tackles. Benjamin Morrison, Xavier Watts and DJ Brown all intercepted passes as well.

Let’s turn back the clock to September 3, 2011, a game that had weather delays, where Brian Kelly laid an egg losing to South Florida. Kudos to Coach Freeman for preparing his team to come out and play after the delay, and impose their will, wearing down NC State in the second half. And it’s nice to stuff the anti-ND coverage that’s always presented by the Disney family of channels in their faces

I know it’s fashionable to bag on Kelly. But the 3 coaches prior to Kelly (Davie, Willingham and Weis) were basically.500. Kelly rebuilt ND and handed Freeman a program that had won 44 out of 50 games the previous 4 years. And was ranked #5 in the country when he took over. Marcus got off to a rough start righted the ship and won 9 last year. Got an unbelievable QB in the portal and has ND among the elite. But, I’ll never say anything bad about Brian Kelly because ND from 1997 to 2009 was a total disaster.

What a game he had! He has some good speed for a TE
A big test that had some sloopy moments (as well as some bull crap penalties from the officials), but overall? The Team enforced their will on the WolfPack and over came the attempts of the game being stolen. Also breaking the streak that NC State had about not allowing 30 or more points scored against them was even sweeter.
Good road win. Now take care of Central Michigan, and then?

It feels nice to have a playmaker at QB. Haven’t really had a QB this talented a passer since Clausen.
Just think what Clausen could have done with this team!
@@user-on8fm7ys7l Interesting question. Let's be honest about it -- Clausen had better receiving targets than Hartman has. I really don't think Clausen would fare better than Hartman with this ND team. No way to know, but I think Hartman is better overall as a college QB.

Benjamin morrison is one of the best cornerbacks we had in years. This guy just knows how to track the football man and plays with his eyes
Morrison is incredible. Just impeccable instincts and great physical tools. He will, I bet, become the best CB in the country before he's done. He's right up there with the best even now as a true sophomore. Sky is the limit.

If the defensive players don't wish to tackle for the last 4 minutes of a game, maybe they should be replaced with the special teams players. Apparently, we have coaches who are ok with allowing the opponent to narrow the gap on a win which will definitely have an impact on the rankings. I guess ND is ok with being 2nd best. Top teams play for 60 minutes.
