When i replayed this game and realized that Baldur was not looking for Kratos but for Faye i was absolutely amazed. You are really put in Kratos' shoes, thinking its all centered around you as the main character and shows how paranoid and guarded Kratos/the player is. ''I'd thought you'd be bigger'' Faye being a giant, ''Your kind being so enlightened'' The giants were clairvoyant and could somewhat see the future. ''Far away from home are we'' Faye being in a completely different realm. All of that is so easily misinterpreted when you know as much as Kratos does. So good.
i never noticed that holly shit but it also makes sense in because no way in hell would someone be stupid enough to pick a fight with a god tha litteraly killed the entire greek mythology
BRO. Holy. That just makes soooo much sense. Baldur and Co had NO IDEA with who they where fucking. Thats also why Mimir is SO incredible shocked when he hears Kratos mentions Zeus in Hel and later realizes hes "danglin from the hip of the bloody Ghost of Sparta" If they knew...im pretty sure the first meeting would have been different. I mean. My Dude crawled out of hell 5 times. Killed a WHOLE Pantheon of Gods. Killed most of the Titans... You dont "take youre chances" with this Guy. Also Faye wasnt stupid. Im pretty sure one of the reasons why she let Kratos closer to her...was because she new WHAT he was capable of doing. He was the only one strong enough to protect her.
Also kinda explains why Odin takes so long to respond as he is probably doing his homework about Kratos and his background hence the “back before winter set in there were a couple of mistakes, regrettable ones”
"And you must be better than me...understand?" God knowing his history and hearing the softness towards his son, and in that line you hear his regret and guilt for everything he did. Incredible writing, the somber yet beautiful music, and the voice work by Christopher Judge, that scene always gets to me
This is called cheese... it makes you sick when you have too much. He was ALWAYS A DAD. He gave up his own happiness to save his daughter and the world.
@@LusciousTwinkle He was always a dad but he never felt like one. We get no time to meet them at all before they're dead. He never acted like a father either. I mean, I'm sure a lot of parents could relate to trying to raise their child to be better than they were growing up. How many can relate to having to give up your dead child to save the world? It's more than just cheese, it's sincerity. It's heartfelt and meant to touch you. The original games tried that, but who cares that he had to sacrifice having a carefree life with the daughter we never got to know? That shit doesn't matter to me, I don't know her, lmao
Kratos literally caused an earthquake and destroyed the environment in the first boss fight. I don’t think he wants to go full out around his son, lol.

Yeah the developer has said that Kratos was holding back but sometimes ingame it doesn't make a lot of sense. I mean if he held back he let Atreus almost die many times??? Kratos is made to seem weak sometimes so he doesn't literally seem like an invincible god and the enemies have no chance against him.
@@finnish_hunter his strength is inaccurate, just like how the flash's speed is inaccurate, he literally ran fast enough to be able to go back to the dinosaur period but cant even outrun a bullet in injustice. it would be ridiculous for the entire environment to be destroyed, and how it wouldnt be entertaining if the flash literally just speed blitz every character
My favorite thing about this game is that it feels like older games. You bought the game and got the whole thing. No paid dlc story nonsense. No major glitches, bugs, crashes. No micro transactions for cosmetics. You paid the price of a full game and they gave us a full game. This game came out years ago and titles today are incapable of delivering a solid game.
This game is truly incredible. The acting really stands out when compared to your average game, and the gameplay (while sometimes repetitive) is sooo satisfying
Yeah that's my only gripe with the game which is the lack of boss/mobs variety other than that it's a 10/10 (and them being bullet or rather axe sponges)
@@pabloescolar_ totally agree, the generic minibosses are cool for the first two times, but they are way overdone. But that is one of the few problems with this game
"Kratos is so much weaker" I feel like people forget that in what is basically the first fight of the game (his brawl with Balder) them pushing against each other literally caused the Earth to part. They seem to forget about the golden bridge he pushes with what seems like almost no effort. There are two factors that make him seem weaker: One, keep in mind for most of the game he doesn't want Atreus to know he is a God. He wants to make himself seem mortal, he is holding back. He also doesn't want a repeat of what happened in Greece, he is holding back his strength and rage. Another thing: gameplay doesn't always line up with lore completely. This shows itself even in the first triology. So you're telling me Kratos can defeat Hercules in a fist fight and even when in bouts of strength against titans like Kronos and Atlas, but he physically struggles to open a chest? You're telling me he can't just kick down doors and gates? Gameplay doesn't line up with lore perfectly. If it did, in the trilogy he'd be moving so fast you literally couldn't see or play as him. By the third game he was supposedly as fast as Helios' light. That just wouldn't be fun to play

also if he went all out near his son it wouldn't end well, his and baldurs fight literally broke the environment so imagine if he accidentally hurt Atreus
I'm assuming most people say that due to gameplay reasons. You argue a lot about him holding back for whatever reason (even after Atreus learns the truth), but the fact remains that he does look much, _much_ weaker during these gameplay sections when compared to the original games. Now, if the reason he looks weaker is due to holding back due to Atreus and his obliviousness to them being Gods, then that'd mean he would not be under such circunstances in the next game, so I'm hoping they turn up the heat with Ragnarok. (especially mobility, my God, he walks like a Skyrim npc right now)
@@boldone66 I think the gameplay is so much slower and more methodical, in part due to the success of similar games like Dark Souls (especially DS1), and partly to give him the feeling of his story wrapping up to start Atreus' story. But the fact is, he is still the Greek God of War, Balder is easily one of the most powerful Gods in all of Norse mythology and Kratos beat him several times without even knowing his weakness. I agree he certainly *feels* weaker when playing as him, but canonically he doesn't seem to be weaker. Maybe slightly weaker, however, he certainly is no useless old man. Also, another commentor mentioned that Kratos is also likely holding back to prevent himself from hurting Atreus, which I can see. Kratos is so powerful he killed the Greek pantheon and the plot point that basically started his story is that his rage blinded him to the point he accidently slaughtered his own family (there was some trickery with Ares, but it was partly Kratos' own naivety). Now that he has a new family, he wants to do everything he can to protect Atreus. If he can create literal canyons in his front yard, it isn't hard to believe that if he went all out the surrounding area would be destroyed, and given Atreus is basically right next to him the entire game, he wouldn't want to go too far and risk hurting Atreus in the collateral Personally, I think Ragnarok is gonna be more intense. The only reason they'd keep him like that is for consistency, but I feel like Ragnarok is gonna get back to the good ole GoW multiple unique weapons (multiple as in more than 2), over the top action (even more t han just fights with a single God), and fast(er) gameplay. I highly doubt the gameplay is gonna be as fast-paced as the original triology, but I imagine we're gonna see it be ramped up a bit
For those who are still wondering why Kratos still have the blades despite being an item that reminds him of his tragic past. There's a god of war comic, after the events in GOW 3, Kratos ventured far away from Greece, during this time he did everything he can to throw away those blades, he toss them into the ocean, buried them under a rubble or just leave it out of nowhere. Everytime he tries to get rid of the blades, the blades always comes back to him, a sad reminder that he can't really escape his past.

43:19 to be fair, Kratos is like the only adult Atreus has known his whole life aside from his mom. He has no concept of how strong a normal person is supposed to be. Also kids his age typically look up to their parents as if they're superheroes anyway
@@MaxingThePayne if every game was like this there’d be no garbage. That’s like saying there would be no one to stand up against violence if everyone was a pacifist.
kratos: has the strength to lift a tree effortlessly, throw anything for miles can probably rip off a tree with a single punch if he tried also kratos: still takes 5 swings to chop a tree.
My headcanon is that Kratos' strength is proportional to how angry/desperate/beaten up he is. Kinda like the hulk. That's why he isn't just max powering his way through everything else even though logically he should be able to. I mean the moments he always displayed the most strength is during his most desperate or difficult moments or where the situation calls for it the most.

The tweet said "A question only the creator can answer, who would come out on top if old Kratos were to face his younger self (Olympus era) Cort barlog responded "Old Kratos. without question"
And Atrues got sick because if you think about it. Atrues is having a godly puberty of his powers unlocking and his strength increasing but if he thinks he's only a human boy his mind wouldn't understand why those things were happening and his brain would fight it. Almost like if you got the flu. Your brain identifies it as a forgein threat because it isn't supposed to be there so it fights the illness by giving you a fever and such. I just hate the fact the games mention nothing about his first wife and daughter. That was his entire motivation for 3 games and spin-offs, and literally the reason his skin is stained ash white, but it doesn't even get a passing mention. It's all about his godhood as a big secret, not what led to his godhood and life in the first place.
@@MrPaynage I agree! I also don’t like how they state he was born a god, not made one after killing Ares. I know he was born a Demi-god but was still mortal.
I've always thought of GoW4 to be the perfect example of what a video game can be. The story, the visuals, the gameplay, everything. It's the perfect proof that video games can be art. If I met someone and they've never even heard of video games before, I would have this be their first (obviously, on a lower difficulty). It is an absolutely fantastic masterpiece that I feel will be an all time classic in the future, a standard to be strived for, for decades to come. In the same way Ocarina of Time was "the best game ever" to some people, even to this day, I feel GoW4 will be as well. The developers should be immensely proud of what they've made, and I cannot wait for Ragnarok. Edit: to those criticizing the gameplay or story, I don't disagree. The gameplay certainly got stale after a while, especially after the umpteenth troll, or the 20,000th hoard of draugr. Let me rephrase: not every piece of the game is perfect. True, the gameplay stales at times, and the story I feel is poor at more than one point (especially regarding anything to do with Atreus, that entire piece feels rushed), but put together, it is far greater than the sum of its parts. Of course, my opinion is only that. Just an opinion. If you disagree for any reason, I have no room to argue you.

Thats also why Mimir is SO incredible shocked when he hears Kratos mentions Zeus in Hel and later realizes hes "danglin from the hip of the bloody Ghost of Sparta"
If they knew...im pretty sure the first meeting would have been different.

He was always a dad but he never felt like one. We get no time to meet them at all before they're dead. He never acted like a father either.

@@giantenemycrab1192 or even if he was safe distance he would just prod kratos as to how he is able to do that which goes back to hiding he is a god
If he can create literal canyons in his front yard, it isn't hard to believe that if he went all out the surrounding area would be destroyed, and given Atreus is basically right next to him the entire game, he wouldn't want to go too far and risk hurting Atreus in the collateral
Personally, I think Ragnarok is gonna be more intense.

If I met someone and they've never even heard of video games before, I would have this be their first (obviously, on a lower difficulty). i love when he resorts to spamming atreus and axe throws like a true god of war. A classic technique ive abused the entirety of the game
21:52 Bro almost went back to the plot of GoW1
3:25:44
Watching this after seeing Charlie play the previous games is...something I don't know how to describe it.
Damn GOW4 has to be my favourite in the series
Seeing Kratos go from letting his anger consume him and do whatever it took to achieve his goal in the original trilogy, to seeing himself and his anger in his son and trying teach him to be better than he was
The sheer character development alone is just a great story, can’t wait for GOW5
Easily one of the best gaming experiences I’ve had it truly is a masterpiece, Can’t wait for Ragnarok :)

It’s woke :( black African Norse Gods
@@christrevor3450 cry about it
@@AzazelPendragon it’s cultural appropriation
@@christrevor3450 yes thats why God of war is a failure /s basically more people care about how good the game is rather than what color the character is. People usually ask "is the game good?" Rather than "what color the characters are."
2:05:27 This exchange I think sets up Freya’s reasonings for what she did to Baldur very well. At least, the more “good” side of that reasoning. “Who you were before doesn’t matter.” Of course it also makes her a hypocrite at the end of the game, along with a lot of other things, but her anger is so potent that it’s understandable what she says. Not excusable, but understandable.
Part 2: 2:23:24 Holy shit, I believe in Norse mythology Loki could turn himself into any animal at will and was the only one able to do so.
“I know. But I am your monster no longer.” That is such a great line
at 2:18:36 you can hear the original Kratos voice peeking through when he says zeus's name, find that really cool
also i could be tripping but if not then thats a really cool nod
also i find it incredibly ironic that at 2:23:33 when Atreus asks if he can turn into an animal, Kratos says no
i have no doubt that was planned, but on the slim chance it wasn't, thats kina funny
Hands down my favorite story game. True masterpiece. 10/10

I actually cried at the ending to this game. Truly a 11/10 game.

8-9/10, good story and combat but a lack of variety when it comes to enemy types.

I will legit listen to mimir's stories while working out or going to sleep. Its that good
2:22:00 This scene is amazing, especially Kratos repeating back "can i turn into an animal".
I love the one shot no loading transition so everything flows and yes i know that the ledges climbing and all that are technically loading but it doesnt break the immersion and gives you dialogue a lot of the time to reflect on.
I just beat this game and I played the originals right before it. One thing that deserves credit is how they modernized the gameplay and combat without completely changing it. It still feels like a god of war change even with how different it is.
This game is absolutely amazing but what’s more amazing is how Charlie can make a 4 hour long video that’s entertaining all the way through

I still think the writing really carries this game as a whole.
The dynamic between Father-figure who is past his prime and the young child, discovering who or what he really is works so perfectly in this game.
Hopefully Ragnarök won't recycle the same Ogre again and keep the storytelling the same as in this game.
Past his Prime? My man kratos here is stronger than in his Past, the director of the game said that old kratos would without a question, win against gow 3 kratos

Lmao Sigrun is NOT “significantly worse” than elden ring bosses. She’s done amazingly
Right, dude was just salty tbh
Sigrun is HARDER than any of the elden ring bosses.
And to think that this game had a tight budget, since this game was a huge success the sequel will have a much higher budget and if done right will be miles better than even this masterpiece
A masterpiece is something that's perfect, and God Of War 2018 is NOT perfect. The bosses are mostly just reskins. That alone is a flaw.

No one purposely makes a mistake so it'll be unlucky to do so
It really is one of the best games ever made. Not just for what it is as a stand alone game, but also as an evolution and risk taker to reinvent such a well known character.
at the end mimir says baldur was never sent to find kratos. he was sent after faye (the giant) it was hinted at many times in the first lines said by baldur, "I know who you are, more importantly i know what you are" and then when kratos comes out " i thought youd be bigger, but you're definitely the one" all hints towards baldur being after faye the whole time and not kratos. an amazing foreshadow and story telling
Four straight hours of Charlie God of War? Christmas must've come early.

@@OllieBR I have given up in trying to figure it out. Once I was curious to see what the hell was one of the channels and it was a dude that supported China's concentration camps.
@@valterfara5027 lmao nice

the opening when the “stranger” shows up is amazing. perfectly sets up the entire game.
1:32:15 For those who don't know, the reason Freya acts so exxagerated here is because those missletoe arrows break Baldur's immortality curse. He'll get to feel again but at the cost of becoming mortal again.
This is pretty great foreshadowing by GOW 2018
For future reference in case Charlie replays the game: New Game+ gives mobs and bosses new mechanics
Like what?

That the first conversation with Baldur is brilliant, you rlly do think he’s talking about Kratos till the final moments and realise it’s Faye he seeks
2:35:10 “why is this elevator so damn long”. Otherwise it would be a loading screen. This is the games way of implementing one, while making the interactions seem authentic
This whole series has been super cool but I personally think 2018 is one of the best games of all time. Most of us played all/most of these games, including Charlie, and maybe this just needs to be props to the editor for making this watch so fresh, but it seems like everytime I see anyone play this game it feels like the first time. Truly incredible game
A damn shame Twitch muted the stream at the best part
Just a reminder, Kratos is always holding back and he's way way stronger than his previous self. He was in his 30s-40s in GOW 1-3 and he's around 200 or so in GOW 4 so he's had around 160-170 years to become more powerful.
The intro moment I see kratos take his rage out of the tree I remembered why I loved this game so much. Takes me back to the good ol days. Thanks charlie

On harder difficulty, smaller enemies don’t get stunned from light attacks or even heavy attacks, enemies have more moves (from what I recall the drauger regain health and explode leaving a circle of poison)
The duality of Kratos regretting his life and achievements while Charlie voicing his own opinions (often of how cool and awesome the events are) is pure art deserving to be put in the smithsonian

I have literally no idea why people complain about Kratos' strength. If you want to fulfill a power fantasy then put the difficulty on easy. The hardest difficulty in the game is ment to be a challenge. Why would you want things to be a easy on the literal hardest difficulty
I think my favorite thing is how the game evolved *with* Kratos
Going to a new world, having a new style, a new level of maturity. It's not to stray away from the past but *because* of the past. A lovely way to bring the old for a journey and welcome the new without anyone being alienated.

Ng+ not only gives each Valkyrie a new move but changes their moveset because of each move, and even after you defeat them all the Valkyrie queen herself gains all new said moves and mixes them up her her randomizer, I only say this in case u were looking for where the game truly seeks the God of War
