Can't believe it, I bought one of these for here in the states. We have been using it to light my house while working on the drywall etc. Have had it running for 6 hours 3 days a week for about 3 months now. Still bright as hell. Also hotter than hell put a infrared thermometer on it and was about 200F at the center of the light array. Great work light.
Thanks for reviewing these. I bought 2 a few months ago for my garage, replacing 150W incandescent and a 150w equiv CFL. I like them and they are quite bright, though I'm sure the lumen output spec was inflated. Bought off Amazon, 120V for US market. I suppose if I ever get around to it, I could add a bit more heat sink compound, drill some holes and remove that foam pad.
Got two of these yesterday (with radar! :)) Very impressed with output and temps. Was thinking would be great to see a 'BigClive' teardown, and Voila!!! Gonna keep one on 24/7 to see how reliable it is. Cheers!

SMPS supplies that are so close together can resonate together if they are not really robust stable designs, and they can produce an audible hissing sound. I have seen this happen in some equipment that placed a number of PCB-mounted, epoxy-potted mini SMPS modules in close proximity to one another. Coils inside them started resonating from mutual inductance and they made a nasty audible hiss.

What would be some good hacks for this type of light to improve longevity? Extra vent holes in the body. More thermal compound or thermal pads for the led boards. Then maybe ditch the foam block in the housing in exchange for peelable silicone on the corners? I was thinking hot glue at first but then realised that was highly likely to just melt off, not sure if the silicone would work but it's worth a shot.
I'd be tempted to apply a bit more heatsink compound to those LED panels. You could compare one as supplied to one that's been redone to see if the temperature is lower or more even.

Amazon has US rated ones in 60W warm white for $39.95 USD. This might be an acceptable lamp for ceiling mount, as long as there is no glass enclosure for the fixture. Enclosed fixtures will destroy LED "replacement" bulbs, as LEDs can't cool themselves adequately in an enclosed fixture. The bulbs fail within months of installation, and it's expensive to replace existing fixtures. The company that makes these should sell a version with a 200-300mm frosted Plexiglas disc mounted 10cm from each COB to diffuse the light a bit. That would be a lot like having 3 incandescent bulbs in a frosted glass fixture. Absolutely ideal for a basement, garage, or industrial.
Great video! I have one. Here it is: LED Garage Lights, 60W Adjustable Trilights Garage Ceiling Light, High Bay Deformable LED Corn Light Bulbs with 6000LM 6000K for Basement Cellar (CFL HID HPS Metal Halide Lamps 300W-400W Equiv.) I don't use it that much because my garage door opener has 2 100 watt LED lights in it. It throws a crap-ton of light. Adjustability of where the light goes is a plus. Will let you know if I have any issues.......about 39 dollars.
Is the UK joining the deformation movement ?? My ceiling fans all have an edison socket hanging underneath, with a milk glass globe. I can just take off the current lights and screw it in. What a great way to keep it cool !
I remember the last time (or maybe the first time??) Clive had radar, a bulb with a tumour on its head. Looked good I thought, so I got a couple which eventually arrived and worked a treat (or so I thougt) One in the porch, one in the hall. About 3:30 they both lit and so did I, certain we were being burgled. The PIR in the drive was dark, perhaps they were tunnelling under the house? I'm with you on the definition of "deformable". However, I'd extend it to objects that can change shape or move in areas besides ones where different parts come together in a joint.
Came back to this one as I was about to pick up something similar for a dark old shed/outhouse. There's absolutely tons of white plastic ones on amazon and ebay now, cant see any metal ones at all now. No idea how good they are, some look like it's far too much weight for a b22 fitting though!
I can't tell you if it will last long term as that would depend on component quality. But it seems quite a nice light from a style and function perspective.
yep 72v * 3 so 216V DC , bridge rectifier and suitable sized cap would do it, although a buck converter that takes 240v down to 216VDC would be efficient, better PF and allow better smoothing.
With the apparent power / real power issue, surely the reactive element will be a sum of the various reactances across the building as seen by the meter. So inductive loads would help cancel out capacitive etc.. The net effect being not such a drastic PF as the individual item. I can see a market for automatic PF correctors :)

considering LED's tend to make noises on contact in the E27's I tend to shut the power off when inserting a bulb. That and I have a similar cob bulb to the other one you showed earlier. My question is does it fit on the end of a weed eater? That screw on part looks like it might. You could trim your lawn at midnight or have a disco party. I am pretty impressed. I may buy one for my shed. I wonder how it will work at -30 degrees. We here in the North have to think about those kinds of things.
I'd be interested to see how one of these lamps compares to a standard 240v 60w halogen lamp when used in the intended location. Particularly the spread of light around the garage and the 'feel' of the light. My personal experience is that using LEDs, and LPF lamps in particular, I have difficulty reading small print, but can read it perfectly fine in natural and incandescent lighting.
Try a warmer color temperature LED bulb. I prefer a 4000k-5000k color temp myself. The 2700k ones are way too yellow/orange, and dim looking to me and anything above 5000k is too cold, blue, and the color rendition (C.R.I.) of them bothers me. Try to find a bulb with a C.R.I. of 90+, (100 c.r.i. would be the same as natural daylight from the sun at noon) and I think you'll find that you'll be able to read print just fine again.
Hey, Clive how difficult would it be to flip the mountains so that instead of failing mounting it could be tried as a lamp bulb set? My apartment only has one ceiling mount for lighting, not in my workshop only the living room. I mainly am a Transformers fan, and I need a bright room light for working on my props and Figurine stuff.
Cool, I'm using a one now(in the US), I got it for free in exchange for leaving an Amazon review. I use it on a motion sensor(I didn't get one with the built in sensor), I don't know if that's good or bad for the lamp but it's good for my electric bill.

Even some multimeters looks like that logos or roboto style :P More than meets the eye indeed... Use plexiglas ruler :P Edit: Just Kidding

Seen you in Glasgow today Clive!
this lamp wouldn't curse in your pinball-machine's room
I found these on Amazon US for about $40US or $50US with motion detector.
Cool, I'm using a one now(in the US), I got it for free in exchange for leaving an Amazon review. I use it on a motion sensor(I didn't get one with the built in sensor), I don't know if that's good or bad for the lamp but it's good for my electric bill.
josh bishop did they get in touch with you about a free unit in exchange for a review?
@@M1Cr0sOfT No, I'm in facebook groups Chinese sellers user to get reviews for their FBA products. They have you buy the product, then refund you through PayPal after you leave the review, sometimes they pay commission. It violates Amazon terms and if you're careless they will wipe your reviews and block you from future reviews. Sellers give codes that can give you up to 99% off at checkout but you should never leave reviews for codes.

josh bishop thank you :)
Would putting a complete covering of themal paste make a lot of difference?
It should be a thin smear. The idea is to fill any holes or voids in the surface so that the heat has a greater area to conduct through.
@@Mark1024MAK I understand that. I was speaking of covering the whole surface, not of more thickness.
I had seen those and thought about buying one
Ventilation holes. Yes I approve of anything which allows threatened insect species to ingress and multiply. So many insect species are at risk of extinction. Don't expect your light to continue working when they set up home in there, though.
There's definitely the autobot logo printed on it
Yes, and the metal heatsink fins (The grey parts) are all the transformer logo too.
No earthing to the aluminium housing? Surely not legal in the UK?
Keep in mind that it goes in a standard 2-pole lamp holder. Most modern LED lamps with metal heatsinks are not earthed, so I always recommend treating them as potentially being live.
@@bigclivedotcom good point, thanks.
*shaped like an autobot symbol*
Me: You're not fooling anyone, you know.
a very deceptive light fitting that gives no ground when its transforming.
More than meets the eye!
I'm wondering if the vent holes actually are the top, and it should go in a lamp base or mayee against a wall, over as advertised
The panels would be the right way up then. They are the shape of the autobot logo, but the wrong orientation for a ceiling mount.
@@andrewness it is odd to have a bottom heavy design
