Fan of Puddle of Mudd? Been meaning to do this story for a long time. In the small town I grew up in, people LOVED this band.
Canadian too, in Edmonton, definitely remember these guys on muchmusic all the time. Curious, where are you from?
@@brandonhammill8048 I used to drive from Cleveland to Niagara Falls just to buy music that I hear a much music The Party, I mother earth, Billy talent Etc. I much prefer Canadian music over the s*** they have in the states right now.cheers 🍻

The wife and I saw them in Ocean CIty this year. Other than the sound system in the joint, they were great for a small venue. All of these different groups have had their demons and so on, but Wes is still out there putting on a good show. Dont knock them until you witness them live for yourself.
Great Comment Brother....
a fool and his money are soon parted.....
This is a band I’d love to see live! I hope they come to the UK!
@@cakeeater2368 Yeah, like your parents paying the hospital for your birth.
Ocean City in Maryland?? If so that's so cool because I live not too far from OC, MD
I grew up with Wes and his family. Dreaming of becoming rock stars, we would draw electric guitars on plywood and my dad would cut out the pattern with a jigsaw. We first met around 1976. Our parents were good friends. Even as little kids, my brother, Wes's brother and I all knew that Wes was different and had star power. We had a blast growing up in Antioch, Missouri. Nothing but great memories from way back in the day. Of course I've always followed his course and wish Wes nothing but the best.
Old KC Park Hill crew.
Saw em play in Westport once… waaayyy back.
Thanks 4 sharing👍
Saw Wez in the Whiskey bar on Melrose about 4 years ago with his dog. He was clearly outta his mind he just walked up to me smiled giggling in my face and he split. It scared the shit outta me! Fast forward a year or so and a friend of mine was mixing Puddle at the Whiskey so I didn’t expect much BOY WAS I SURPRISED! Home boy was on point the show was packed and Wez did a killer show! He blew the crowd away and impressed everyone! He’s a quality musician when he’s sober!
It's amazing what drugs and alcohol can do to a person.
That's pretty similar to how Anthony Kedis described Kurt Cobain.
Just saw him two weeks ago in Sturgis, SD, he was clearly drunk, he couldn't keep tune, he would just not sing parts either, really sad, but still loved to see him live
@@gageblakeman7952 yeah I heard he was at the Chip. He’s definitely hit or miss.
Doesn’t matter what people say about them. Back in 2002 I had my first big love in life, I was allowed to stay over night, which was like a miracle for me. Outside the weather was cold and we cuddled on the couch under a big warm blanket. No worries in that moment, life & everything was just perfect. I couldn’t believe how lucky I was. None of us admitted to be tired, we just enjoyed holding each other. But shortly after that she felt asleep first, I just looked at her face. I thought she was the most beautiful being I have ever seen. i looked at her until I fell asleep myself. For some reason there was a Puddle Of Mudd CD in the stereo. The player was broken and kept repeating the song “she f*cking hates me”. Even we fell asleep, both heard it in our dreaming. After the 20 times or I woke up in middle of the night and wanted to turn off the stereo. Then she woke up and asked me “Did you also think this song was never ending in your dream”. We both laughed and went to bed. Every time I’m hearing something from Puddle Of Mudd it takes me back to that night and this moment. Since then I never was in love like that again, since then I never felt the same again for any person. I carry this until I die.
Sometimes the stories we tell are better than the music. What musicians hope is for the music to be just as good as stories like that.
I hope I get to experience something like that someday.
@@ryanphillips4123 For me it's King's X, their first five albums. That's all that I was listening to from 1988 to 1994 and I have so many amazing memories from that time period. My first serious relationship was in 1988 and we were sitting together the first time we both heard King's X, we were both blown away. We were both also in rock bands but different bands and used to go to concerts together in Texas or go see our other friends bands perform or I'd go see her band (they were doing gigs around town).;
That relationship didn't last and she turned out to be a narcissistic cunt but I was still listening to King's X and when I first moved out of my Mom's house, had my own place all to myself for the first time I was blasting King's X (well some Soundgarden too). King's X was also one of the few bands that my brother and I ever agreed on, he was more into rap and I was into rock but he got me started listening to rap (Snoop Dogg's first album) and I got him started listening to hard rock which (ironically) was the album Dogman by King's X. I'm just now realizing the irony of that for the first time actually.
🤢🤢🤢
What happened to that relationship brother?
@@ScottyHeSavage unfortunately, life happened. At some point our paths went in different directions. We were young, we only turned 20 - each one had different dreams about future. All I know is, just a couple of years ago she had her first child with an another man. She is married now. 3 years ago surprisingly we met at a business convention there she told me. Her voice and eyes still were the same, also her smile/laugh. It was a heavy moment for both of us. We parted ways smiling but with tears in our eyes. It is like it is. We ain’t the same persons anymore as back then - we will never be. I never felt love like this since then. I think it’s the same for her. All I know is I want her to be happy.
I used to go to Puddle of Mudd field-parties back in the day. Wes Scantlin wasn't in the band.
Puddle of Mudd was basically done, members on their separate ways before Scantlin ever came on the scene.
Had various friends who opened for Scantlin over the years and they all said the same things- a dick and a diva.
The 90s was a wild time for music.
Yeah 90s were awesome, unlike the 00s and Puddle of Mudd :D
I grew up on this kind of music and although they only had a few hits and fell off the map, this was rock of the early 2000’s.
Puddle of Mudd played The Cuban Club here in Tampa, Florida in 2017. They were AWESOME 👏 Wes was great & I got to meet him. One of the best shows I’ve been to.
The Cuban club is still around????? I thought they shut that club down a long time ago. Lots of famous bands played there before they got huge. Even Allekas Attic played there once.
Blurry is still a tear jerker
They pissed it all away.
Drift -n- Die really good tune. I suggest a listen. Always pondering why I'm here. I guess to just drift and die.
Plenty of more trips down "memory lane" coming up before the end of the year - 80's, 90's and 2000's era!

I met Wes in 07 just before he got married while I was working as a revenue auditor at a beach resort. His fiance kept calling the front desk asking for his room number (of which I could not disclose) So I would transfer to his room. After a few hours he unplugged the phone and eventually came to the front desk with a very high end escort asking which strip club in the area was the best and for a cab to take them there. Fiance called maybe 15 times or so... I knew that marriage would never last lol.
I just remember being in high school when these guys came around, and nobody liked them because they were just another one of those “lurr” bands when every word they sang began and ended with either an R or a Y 😂
Lol could you give an example?
yes!!
Imagine going to Fred Durst and asking his permission to be a musician
Saw them live in STL at a festival when I originally went to see Local H. I was blown away by how amazing and fun puddle was.
KSHE95 introduced them to me. I didn’t actually have time to see them live but I did like what l heard on radio 🎶
This dude should come to Brazil, he would be received much better.
I’m obsessed with puddle of mudd. I do puddle of mudd covers all the time !
I started really listening to Puddle of Mudd in high school, originally because a girl I liked was really into them. It was right when they'd release the album Famous (2007), which blew them up again for a while. I thought that album was alright, and I'd remember liking some tracks from Come Clean that were big on the radio when I was a younger kid, but what really intrigued me was their early stuff from the 90s - The albums Stuck and Abrasive, as well as their early demos from around that time. Those show that the original lineup of Wes, Jimmy, Sean and Kenny had something substantial to them, even if its execution was rough around the edges. Interestingly, "Drift and Die", "She Hates Me", and another song from their major days, "Nobody Told Me", were all written and recorded in the 90s.
Nowadays, it's difficult to get a read on them, with their many lineup changes, and especially with Wes's erratic and seemingly bizarre behavior over the years. I liked how their latest album was led by a re-recording of "You Don't Know" from Stuck, and how the four original guys all seem to be on okay terms with one another, but they're like a mixed bag.
Always enjoying these trips down memory lane, thanks man. Would like to see what happened to Sevendust one of these days
Haha around the time of your comment, sevendust came through and played my small city of about 125,000 people. I thought about going but didn’t make it
The puddle dried up ...
Just like your mom.😂🤣😅

Man, this was my absolute favorite band; 2001 Mtv days were awesome.😎🤘 I still remember "She Hates Me" to this day! Come Clean was my absolute favorite CD.
Puddle of Mudd is now playing in an Indian casino in Southern California. 😅
saw them at the texas club in baton rouge a couple months ago, awesome performance and he looked happy to put on a show. Would absolutely pay to see em again
I met Wes at a bar in Nashville. We did coke off a homeless dude while drinking Narragansett lager. Great guy!!!!
You did coke off a homeless dude? I'd rather do it off a strippers' ass, but maybe that's just - rock and roll!!🤘
Was the homeless dude in on it? Did y'all do it off his ass?
Sounds kinda gay
@@brantleyhester6641 Plot twist: Wes was the homeless dude ...
@@candrelsrosa ok I could see that happening
I love your b roll film lol. It's telling a story of Wes's band mates being mad and the video is of 3 mean looking factory workers. It's cool though, better than showing nothing!
I got to see them this past year in Charlotte county Florida great show and in 2019 in Vegas play there mudd fest tour on Fremont Street wes told the crowd it was about 3am looking out a jail cell window at the moon he will never mess up and end back behind bars again and he seems to have stuck to it
I still listen to their songs to this day. If there was social media back in the 60’s,70’s,etc…people would’ve found any reasons to hate them rock bands too. Don’t care what anyone says, their best songs will live forever
The way I see it, Puddle of Mudd is a Fuel knock-off. Still enjoy their album Come Clean, though. Blurry is a hit song that has aged surprisingly well.
They just refunded tickets for a show date in December down here near San Antonio. No reason given for the band cancelling. Sucks. Was really looking forward to the show.
My band Dead Amsterdam opened up for them in August and had a bunch of people say we we're better. Took them over 2 hours for soundcheck and then later on when it was time to go on they turned their amps way up so the soundcheck was meaningless. Wes was cool but you can tell he's a loose cannon.
I wandered into the parking area of their bus one time in Burlington VT, and he was outside throwing football with the crew, he saw me, and threw the ball to me, and I am still amazed how I caught that ball, but I did, threw it back and I knew I was ok to come and hang for a few. He had his little dog with him, crushing coors light cans, and being super cool. Took some pics, and chatted for a few and headed back to find my wife (now ex) in line and brag to her and everyone else where I just was. Met him again and was still a very nice and cool dude, but there was a whole lot people with lucky encounters like that didn’t see the real struggles he was going through, until we saw the headlines come across our newsfeeds. Hopefully with the news about him being quiet lately, he’s getting his life together. Unfortunately we’ll never see a full reunion, too many bridges burned, better opportunities, and Paul is battling illness that will make him probably never able to perform again.
I'm more interesting in hearing what happened with the ex-wife? She bang a roadie?
I will always loved this band. I wish they would put out some more music

Great video.
You missed quite a bit of history here, like how a glimmer of bad and how the public started taking out of favor with the band in 2004 when Wes and his gf Rachel Hunter broke up and that’s what began a bit of his spiral as he took the stage hammered which was heavily reported. Also Paul Phillips rejoined the band in 2008 and recorded a very well-received cover album. Doug also co-wrote “Control” with Wes in their first meeting and remained with the band until like 2011
Just played a show in Cincinnati Friday
Great video
Side note, did you ever do a what ever happened to Cold? I was a big fan of their first three albums in the late 90’s early 2000’s
they had one semi-hit song, "stupid girl" because the lyrics and arrangement were done by that dude from Weezer. After that, they faded away because they sucked ass
Wes is a talented musician. Substance abuse and mental issues will destroy anyone.
Nope, dude has absolutely zero talent.
Wes???? Talented????😂😂😂😂😂
@@kylehegedus5498 yeah just watch any of his 2001-2005 performances. he was very talented. drugs took it all.
I went to that Toledo show in '04. Wes was SUH-MASHED. Vocals were okay, but he kept playing wrong chords and taking his guitar off and stage diving when he should have been singing. Speech in between songs was noticeably slurred. The band left the stage after, the second song, iirc, but came back out. They left the stage again after the forth song and didn't come back out. To Wes's credit he came out by himself and improvised a song, "Toledo Is Neato". Everyone was booing and throwing drinks at him. He threw an empty water bottle and was arrested as soon as he stepped offstage. Apparently the cop that was backstage thought it was a glass beer bottle. They had scheduled a make up show for charity but ended up canceling due to low ticket sales.
Edit: found some articles and a setlist online and it looks like it may have been after the forth song that the band first walked off stage and after the sixth song when they left for good. Wes played one song by himself before improvising "Toledo Is So Neato". Apparently he was on stage by himself for half an hour before finally leaving. I do remember one of the local news stations reporting on it had interviewd someone that snuck in a camcorder and got the whole thing on video. They played a few seconds of it just to show how drunk Wes was. They threatened to release the full video if the band didn't apologize but it still hasn't seen the light of day.
Blurry is a great song but holy shit, this entire band history is peak white trash
Always enjoyed listening to these guys. It’s nothing amazing in my opinion but fun to listen to and never gets old(in my opinion). Missed them at a festival in New Jersey about 9 years ago cause they played so damn early on a Saturday and we were still driving there and I heard they were incredible. Local radio station said they were the days best band and we saw bands like sevendust, black label society, 3 days grace & slash w/myles Kennedy so we got to see them headline a mini festival called Mudd Fest in stroudsburg PA about 4 years later in a cool place called the Sherman theater. Played with Trapt, Saliva, Saving Abel and Tantric(also was awesome) and POM was pretty damn good man!!! They played till like 1 in the morning. The place was saying they were in huge trouble with the town but everyone was into it and they just kept playing all the hits and were really on. Sorry to hear he hasn’t stayed good but sounds like yeh really bad days are behind him and I’m glad I got to see them. Was worth it
That Nirvana cover was unreal lol

Saw them in the early 2000’s at the Riviera theater in Chicago, they killed it that night, sounded really good!

Correct, the person in that picture is Duane Betts. It's ok though...when TMZ last reported about Paul, they managed to put in pictures of 2 different guitarists in the "Paul Phillips Performance Photos" slide show, lol (they also used the pic of Duane Betts and a pic of Adam Latiff 🤦♀).
It’s sad what’s happened to this band.

Kind of sounds like Linkin Park over played to death on the radio during this era soured a lot of people to their music. Great opening first album but never able to really recapture it. Granted Linkin Park had much more success and longevity than Puddle of Mudd. Not very many bands of this era that can be considered all time classics. Had trouble dealing with success seems so strange but happens more often than not.
All of linkin Parks songs have the exact same format and style. They are a one dimensional band. Their second album...yawn...sounded like the first one. Puddle accomplished a lot more than Park was even capable of.

Their first 2 albums are some of the best its time/genre. Un-Ashamed to admit still listen to those albums on regular basis. Wes' rehabilitation is something not many can do. Credit to the dude for cleaning up and not being another 'Dead Rockstar' statistic
Cleaning up? Have you seen him recently or heard him sing? Always was trash and still is. Nothing good about this band or their lead guy. He cannot sing and their music is a bad grunge rip off. Terrible band, absolutely terrible. Not a single redeeming quality.
