Casper understands you, that’s nice. Always good to have a friend to be there in a time of need. But then came Dunlop. Dunlop don’t deflate Casper anymore than he already is.
The real key to using a knife for survival in my mind, is the ability to use it to build other tools you might be able to use with the resources found around you. Imagination, and practical thinking need to go with it.
I went truck camping last night and forgot a lighter. I tried using this little farro rod on my leatherman to ignite a tumble weed ( the ones for bbq starting) but I ended up starting the fire with my jumper cables and a tent stake. Had to light a napkin then the tumbleweed.
Good little vid Jason! Reminded me of the day I wound up homeless years ago. Had everything I needed to make a camp by the time I hit the riverbank. All from scrounging along the way.
I'm also carrying a small 300 grit diamond sharpener these days. After a hard day of hacking, digging and maybe prying just restoring an edge can make a big difference.
Definitely Jason practice practice it all will come down to what you know and do simple things but practical thank you very much stay safe out there God bless your family
An old adage I heard/read, not really sure… The most important items you could ever carry are items either impossible to replicate in nature or very difficult…. ie… high carbon steel knife, tarps, plastic sheeting, ferro rods, fish hooks, rot proof cordage like bank line, etc… makes life saving abilities 100x easier…
Great video with great information!!!! And yes bamboo is such a highly underrated material that can be used in SO many diff ways!!!! And with how fast it grows back....I wish it grew everywhere!
This was one of the more entertaining videos I’ve seen in awhile 😂 Love the use of resources and the “grit” you displayed getting a fire.. Good job brother 👊🏻🔥👊🏻
"I can sleep almost anywhere." That was my dad. He learned it in the army. "If they give you a 20 minute break, you take a 15 minute nap then hit the latrine." Unfortunately, I didn't inherit it from him...
Good morning Mr. Salyer. (4.30am). Having Casper & Dunlop as a mate does helps mentally but it is also known as displacement syndrone. Absoutely nothing wrong with that, we do what's necessary to survive. To be pysically fit one must be mentally fit too. We give you 10 points for producing a fire on your second try, took us five goes before we got lunch cooked. Also may we add that there's a lot you can do with bamboo, such as shelter, water carrier & storage, tools & weapons and our favourite weave a basket with handles so you can forage for food, tinder etc. You can also cook food in it. Also perhaps you should get some natural medicine for that cut on your hand. Mr. Kay could help you with that. Mr. Alan Kay is full of wonders, we are very proficient with the kukri coz of him. BTW we've comleted our potato patch, now lets see if they grow. See you next ON3.
It's all about the basic's to me. Learn the basic then you can Improvise and adapt to your surroundings. Never give up. Stay occupied setting up resources for the next day. Always think ahead once you have your current situation somewhat in hand.
Groovy stuff. I know what you mean about friction fire. It's a ball buster, but what a joy when it works. Looking forward to more in this series. Cheers from Montreal QC.
Great vid brother Two of my favorite knife quotes: 1. "You must always have a knife, in the darkness..." 2. "A good knife is gonna be your most important tool in the survival situation, it allows you to manipulate the environment around you, and create some order in the chaos."
When you first pulled out the bamboo I was hoping that you were going to try that. I saw the first time you did it or at least the first time you filmed it and I was so very thrilled to learn a different way to start a friction fire. I'm sure I thanked you on that video but I'm also going to thank you again on this one. Keep up the good work Ole buddy.
I enjoy the mindset and approach I live in a rural suburban area and one of the classes we teach is about suburban survival and all the resources available if you just think a little outside the norm. Love the appt love the concepts cheers K
Great video Jason! Combining learning and entertainment, is always good. I have asked about Alan a few times. Is he ok? Only answer is you want to. I'm just unaware of what is going on with him.
I love that knife design… went to their site and it’s not listed… Prototype? It’s like a grown up version of a Battle horse knives Comanche or Foxhound…. And that’s great company to be in!
You're entering ASMR-territory with the bamboo-splitting sound😂. I had anticipated prior to watching the episode, that the work on the shelter would be the easiest part for you, because you could use a variety of tools in addition to the knife (e.g. a baton or rock and natural or scavenged materials). Nice crib.👍
That pool of muddy water if we can dig a sort of channeling it to flow to one side the dia a hole about a few inches away from the muddy water so that the ground itself act as a filter then either use the charcoal or fire to boil it maybe using hot rocks ...hmmmm..
I have attempted the fire plow a few times using cottonwood with very little success. It seems to be very material dependent. What have you had success with?
I’ve been enjoying the series. And thinking about what knife I would want if I was to try this myself. I have so many knives. But it would probably have to be one of my edc knives. So maybe I need to start carrying something besides the Prather War Bowie or Brakimo (my most used edc’s).
Arctodus Simus You cant go wrong with a full tang knife if you notice with most of these survival people they carry and use a full tang knife as they are stronger than a flip or pocket knife.
G'Day Jason, I like this video being about on the outer edge of suburbia & you using those sheets of tin etc that is definitely something worth doing & I have used down here in Australia many years back with a group of mates. We successfully built a decent shelter using many sheets of corrugated iron as well as building a decent fire place with it too. I like your full tang knife I see it has some Damascus feathering in it did you make this yourself? and did you use high carbon steel or some type of stainless steel? I make my own knives too that's why I ask lol. Well look forward to your next video and should check out your previous ones too. Stay safe & stay sharp 😁😉
I guess Dunlop failed to mention if you were to split him open his head he is one continuous rubber band wrapped like a ball of yarn lots of uses there I would believe
You said ask questions?? Ok here are some stealth camping what are some punishments? And have personally got loss in the backcountry where had to do overnight survival techniques to make it til you were rescued or had to self rescue? I am planning on hiking a section of the AT and I am quite nervous. First I have to take a survival training course…. Hope you find time to answer a few of my questions thanks
While I have never been lost, I have definitely been turned around a bit. I was able to use my navigation skills to course correct and find my way back. Training is key. The more skills you have the more confident you will be. Good luck!
Would love to have that knife! Just no wood handles please I do not like wooden knife handles. I see it’s a prototype if you start making it I would definitely get one!

Good job. We did that once and I happen to remember I stuck a mini lighter in a bag just in case. It was still there.
Good little vid Jason!

Love the bamboo bed, and Dunlap. Nice blade per Mr. B. Yeah use that bamboo and get rid of it. As always, we enjoy watching.
Spider on you and you don't even care lol... Love this series... Do more
The more I look at that knife the more I want one. The only problem is I've already got so many. Including some big ones with high carbon steel blades
What is that knife? I also thought about getting one.
It is a prototype made by Bear Forest Knives. Contact them about it and it might become part of their normal lineup. I love the knife as well.
What’s owning so many already got to do with anything? 😂😂😂
Nice work... I really like this series!
Those tactical flip flops ain’t gonna help you stay warm. Kiddin. Thanx for the vid.
I really enjoyed this series.
Really enjoying the series. You're very resourceful, but I would have liked to see how you would have built your shelter if that tin wasn't available.
There will be plenty of shelter building in future videos that I think you will enjoy.

I would like to see a more detailed video of that fire making technique. Good videos!
I’ll put it on the list!

For Dunlop🙂

Yes. The knife in this video is a prototype. Contact BFK and he may be able to help you out.

Ask Dunlop iff he still has contact with his distant couson Wilson 😂
He said they are not on speaking terms. Apparently all of the fame went straight to Wilson’s head.

It was a charred stick out of the fire I made using just the knife! No cheaters here!!! Thanks for watching!
how do you deal with ticks?
Do you have any opinions on the Esse 3 knife? Where it would place in the survival knife realm..
The ESEE 3 is a solid choice. It will do 99% of the things you need a knife to do.
