Collecting the harmonic series from an oscillating fan

Following on from yesterday’s play time with the oscillating fan drone, there was something i didn’t capture. the thing that always draws me to these drones. i can hear the drone flowing up and down the harmonic series as the fan turns. after some experiments with mic placement and a bit of filtering i managed to bring them out. much better. just added some kalimba on the dictaphone for a little bit of movement.

i've noticed the harmonic series cropping up in some fans and aircon units a lot, strangely. maybe it's just the human mind playing into its own bias as it tends to do but i find it really fascinating.

awesome! it may be.. but it is there 😁 i’ve always noticed it but this is the first time i’ve actively worked on focusing in on those sounds. i can only guess it’s the metal cage around the fan and / or the surfaces around it? as it only happens when oscillating.

they are amazing fun. you can still get a little porta 02 for cheap and they’re great fun! i found the limitations on it really good for creativity 👌🏻
