The 70's was like a flash lost in time, hard to believe that it has passed so incredibly quickly, but this wonderful band still sounds the same as if time hasn't really taken its toll on us. Blessed forever be all their songs that accompanied me through that old maze that was my youth... and my old age at the same time.

El Cerrito, California is perched on a hill just North of Berkley overlooking Golden Gate Fields. Back when John and Tom lived there, the park would host a carnival once a year. They would literally sit on the back porch and watch the tambourines and elephants.

I've made nearly 900 UA-cam videos. Mostly for Christian songs. But I grew up listening to country music. So I also have made quite a few videos for country songs. I've always liked this song, so I figured I'd make a video for it. But then I took a close listen to the lyrics, and thought "how am I going to find images to match those lyrics? 'Tambourines and elephants are playing in the band...won't you take a ride on the flyin' spoon?''" Oh, well, I always like a good challenge, maybe I'll give it a shot. Failing that, I did find a nice instrumental lullaby-style version of the song, believe it or not. I live in the country and have lots of nice nature pictures "lookin' out my back door" at the beautiful scenery around me. Maybe I'll make a video about what my extended "back door" looks like.

@Heinrich Himmler Thanks for your kind words.

    • @michaeldell4085

@Heinrich Himmler Come-oooon, man ! Can't you hear beyond the labels ?? Mr.Marshall just likes the song, for C*****s sake. He just tries "to find images to match those lyrics" even - possibly - as a christian. AND he's putting himself out there. [Also, by the way, "Heinrich" was my father's middle name (but "Himmler" not his last). And my old man - being an Austrian at the time - DID actually find himself - 'cause there was no option to bow-out, lest you would get strung up for desertion on the Vienna-"Ring-Strasse" - on the wrong side of the front-line both in a Nazi-'U'-boat in '43 in the North Sea as well as in East-Prussia in '45 and lived to tell me about it extensively and to sorely regret it (at least that's what he said) So, Mr."Himmler" I've been thoroughly insructed about what those times were like : it definitively wasn't a pretty picture ! AND I really hope, that you used that name 'just' to draw attention to your comments ... well, you certainly did and all you did was draw 'FLAG' = 'FLugzeug-Abwehr-Geschütz'. Now, you wanna be merely a stickler for "DEFINITIONS, Jawohl, mein Führer" ? OR are you a serious modern-day white supremacist (I sincerely hope not ! We've got enough problems as it is after the Storming of the Capitol). Please, man, just relax, sit back and enjoy the music & the lyrics, if you will. We had enough animals between 1933 and 1945, let's keep it civilized, now, please ! MichaelWDell (nothing arian in MY last name)

@Heinrich Himmler FYI : CCR are from Oakland, the Great State of California. Nothing intrinsically 'southern' in their blood, now is there ? Too rich for your blood : the variety of styles CCR can adopt ? Mellow down, man, and stick the venom where the sun never shines, please ! MichaelWDell

I first heard this when I was about ten, on a CD of Halloween songs one of my aunts made for the family. I have all the songs saved on my bookmarks bar, including this one. Later, when I was in high school, the cafeteria had Halloween songs playing, and when I recognized one of them, I wondered if it was the same CD my aunt made...what a twist that would've been.

This song has always freaked me out, even when I was really little. I love CCR, and I like this song actually, but I feel like this was the song I was listening to before I died in my past life or something lol. It makes me think of death, and I used to hide under blankets when I was a kid whenever my dad would play it. I'd tell my parents it was the "death song", which creeped them out. I listen to it to deliberately freak myself out now lol

Happy creatures dancing on the lawn.’ If that’s not a reference to LSD, I don’t know what is!

Just got home from Illinois, lock the front door, oh boy!
Got to sit down, take a rest on the porch
Imagination sets in, pretty soon I'm singin'
Doo, doo, doo, lookin' out my back door
Giant doin' cartwheels, statue wearin' high heels
Look at all the happy creatures dancin' on the lawn
Dinosaur Victrola list'nin' to Buck Owens
Doo, doo, doo, lookin' out my back door
Tambourines and elephants are playin' in the band
Won't you take a ride on the flyin' spoon? Doo, doo, doo
    Wond'rous apparition provided by magician
Doo, doo, doo, lookin' out my back door
Tambourines and elephants are playin' in the band
Won't you take a ride on the flyin' spoon? Doo, doo, doo
Bother me tomorrow, today, I'll buy no sorrow
Doo, doo, doo, lookin' out my back door
Forward troubles Illinois, lock the front door, oh boy!

Tambourines being in the air…but not Mr Zimmerman’s dancing “beneath the diamond sky

    Silhouetted by the sea
    Circled by the circus sands”
Thanks, John, for your equally lucid verse

I sometimes wonder if CCR was a recent band, would we still like them as much as we do, or do we like to listen to them for the nostalgic feeling that comes from hearing their music? Think about it.

between finding happiness in the wonders of the human imagination (or drugs whatever) and the fact that this song is in my 3rd favourite movie (Scott Pilgrim and Donnie Darko being 1st and 2nd respectively) has made this my go to comfort song, cures the anxiety of the world, cures the sadness of whatever the day may bring and gives solac in the fact that sometimes you're all you need to give yourself the small shred of joy that you need.
