  • Anybody else having trouble metal stamping?
Do you have a jewelry tag for your jewelry line, if so what is it made of?
What metal stamping tools do you use/recommend?
Any help or advance would be greatly, and I mean GREATLY appreciated.
Or if you’re having trouble too, let me know and we can all struggle together. Doesn’t that sound like fun? I’ll be in the comments section, so talk to me there. Wink wink
Day 3 of SSSVEDA, and I hit a wall. This is by far the biggest problem I’ve encountered trying to create my jewelry line. The jewelry tag.
DAM DAM DAAAAM. Cue scary music
Reasons for my recent procrastinations have all stemmed from my troubles trying to impress my gold filled/sterling silver jewelry tag with my custom ordered metal stamp, with my Craftrendy brand logo on it.
I use a 2 pound dead blow hammer, hammering on a jeweller’s anvil. The stamp is 7mm round, with plenty of surface space, as opposed to just lines like a regular letter stamp.
The shop I ordered the stamp from, they were able to impress my logo stamp just fine with similar metal stamping tools (the tools I use were mostly recommended by them).
However, I am unable to get a clear impression. Why, oh why...!
It’s times like these that I feel like a piece of poop and start to have doubts in myself. But before I get too negative and start considering throwing myself out a window, I shall stop typing right here and get working on other aspects of my craft business.
Hope you enjoyed (?) watching me struggle. It happens, and I’d like to share all of that, the good and the bad, with you.
I thank you for your company.
    Lots ❤︎

You should try a "soft strike" metal such as aluminum or pewter, as it's easier to leave an impression.

+Karyn Hayden Thank you for your tips!! I actually did try stamping on aluminium after this video, and was able to leave a clear impression! (I was so happy I was jumping up and down) Also managed to get quite a good impression on copper, but am still struggling with gold filled and sterling silver, which is what I want to impress on ultimately for my jewelry tag. Would you say it's just a matter of skill, or is some metals simply too hard??

+Craftrendy It's both. Leaving an impression on sterling silver and gold fill just takes more practice, and the metals are harder. I would use the thinnest gauge you can find for your tags. The thinner the gauge, the easier it is to stamp on. Good Luck!

+Karyn Hayden ooh, I was starting to think that maybe a thicker gauge would be better (also to eliminate the back being impressed with the texture/scars on the anvil/bench block) I use 24 gauge metals atm. Not sure if I can find anything thinner than that, though... Again, thanks for the tips :)
