- A veteran diver in B.C. is sharing her story about an "unbelievable" encounter she had recently with a giant Pacific octopus near Campbell River last weekend.
Andrea Humphreys says while diving with friends, the octopus approached them and spent about 40 minutes climbing on her mask and camera. Much of the encounter was caught on video.
"It was just unbelievable. I've been diving for so long and never had an encounter like this," she said.
Kylie Stanton reports on Humphreys experience and what advice she'd share to others thinking about getting into diving.

Wow a woman of steel nerves rewarded with such an incredible CLOSE encounter with possibly the most fascinating creature on earth. Congratulations Andrea, and thank you for sharing your joy and excitement.
Something I always wished I have done in my life. What an amazing experience!
More and more the sentience of all creatures is being made aware to us. What a lovely story
Octopuses are the most intelligent sea creatures. We have little understanding of them and don’t really know where they came from.
Sadly, Spain is opening a factory farm to harvest octopus for meat.
@@scrane5500 very sad for this shadow to be cast over octopus.
Shade on our industrialized food complexes.
@R C not from outer space?
not from another dimension?
@@penelopehill9710 We all are from another dimension and outerspace lol. Duh
It could easily have killed her with its beak but sensed her curiousity and embraced her instead. These are magnificent creatures and so intelligent. I would love an encounter like that . . . lucky lass.
Not really, unless it bit through her jugular...could've removed her respirator though! One arm grabs you and another anchors itself and you aren't going anywhere, drowning is more likely. Seems friendly tho
Lol geeze how many octopus related deaths a year I wonder these bloodthirsty fiends seem dangerous
@@Brett-yq7pj Ray Mears thought stingrays were pretty harmless too . . . you are right about the number of deaths though so I will not worry myself to sleep about it.
@@jimbojones101 Reckon Steve Irwin was fully aware of the dangers posed by Stingray
She knew how to read it by its color & felt it was safe.
My Octopus Teacher on Netflix is absolutely fantastic!
Good for you.. thanks for sharing with the world. Awesome.
WOW! This needs to be in a nature documentary!
Thank you so much for sharing!
Octopuses are always welcoming creatures
I love coldwater diving, I went in BC once it was quite pretty below the thermocline
Awesome Thank you Global News
Didn't panic, I'm impressed
Anyone watching this please do not attempt to scuba dive alone. Especially in B.C. waters where you can get stuck in massive kelp beds and die simply from being stuck. Our currents are intense at times. Scuba alone has to be the dumbest thing to ever do. You are asking for death.
Very cool. There is a documentary on-line about an octopus. They are very smart.
Amazing footage, dear lady! I envy you that experience... Thank you for sharing, you're awesome
Pretty awesome!👍🏻👍🏻
PRECIOUS SOUL...What an HONOUR to SEE ..." The Octopus Teacher " :)
Amazing thank you
Nerves of steel, well done.
Im a diver since 1978.....ocean and fresh water... you darlin are a rockstar.....
He appreciated your pink bright colors. Unusual. Maybe pink attracts.
I've read too much HP Lovecraft to not be freaked out by this. 😅. Glad this was a wholesome story.
They are so smart. Now that it touched her bare skin and had a good experience with her it will never forget her.
Beautiful
That is so cool. Octopi are like real life aliens!
Can't believe there's a factory farm opening in Spain that will be slaughtering these amazing animals for meat! 💔
Why is that hard to believe? When cooked properly, octopus is delicious. And isn't farming them far more ecologically sustainable than harvesting them from the wild?
Amazing
Giant octopus wants a friend.
Alien space bug. I used to dive. She’s lucky it wasn’t a Humboldt squid.
I would’ve been super scared that I would’ve got bit by the beak inside the octopus 🐙
If you like octopus then you will enjoy a documentary called "My octopus teacher".
It`s a heart breaker.
I snorkel
Most certainly every corner is different
Can octopuses see color? Maybe she/he was curious about her head gear?
Check out Octolab TV on UA-cam. They do lots of tests of octo's visual acuity, intelligence, etc. It is very interesting.
Ugh the sucker patern gives me anxiety
I think it was asking for a set of the pink frilly stuff on her headgear. Lol.
He said no filming no paparazzi 😂
How im feeling
More intelligent below the waves than in Vancouver.
agreed
1:33 the beak is right in the center there! :D
Sometimes I wonder if intelligent creatures like octopi and dolphins would like to have tanks-on-wheels for exploring the world above the waves for themselves...?
such an interesting thought!🤔
Reminds me of the little mermaid……the little octopus. 🐙
Im convinced those things are aliens.
very lucky its didnt get aggressive
Lucky !!
They are smarter than we are.
That wood just be cool.
Wow...that's just amazing
Horrifying
I think it was the pink accents
Poor octopus 🐙
I think it liked her pink accessories
Curiosity killed the cat!
the news must be running out of stories
Oh my gulay 😦

She was scared.
older women that act like 5 yr olds lol
She's acting like the octopus gave her a happy ending! Relax 😅
She loves kalamari
That’s squid…
Are we seeing her scuba ALONE? Both times you showed her going down and coming up from the water it appears she does not have a dive partner. I dive in portal cove and see massive octopus and 10 foot jelly fish patches all the time- right off the shore and they hangout and will chill and show you how they catch crabs and sit and eat them in front of you. Anyone that dives off the B.C. shore knows this isn’t an uncommon sight. Sorry to burst your bubble. Most divers make more of an effort to keep a distance though……
Are we going to get a breaking story about the multicoloured starfish wall at Wycliff park? If she’s been diving these waters for 12 years and only saw a giant octopus once that starfish wall that’s been there for decades is really going to blow her mind lol
I HATE THESE THINGS
Scuba Diver: Sees something underwater.
Global News: This is a scoop.
In Korea we eat this alive 😅
she isnt my type lol
Slow news day?
I like these stories. It’s nice to showcase kindness and how cool our earth is.
Disgusting.
U ppl eat it lol
yes she is
