@themedleb What about those people who will be framed? That would suck, but imagine how insane scifi shows can get or even cartoons. The news can be scripted by humans and spoken by AI, no need for newscaster with their own opinions muddying up the news. Virtual environments rendered this way would be awesome. Imagine a future where VR is done without goggles but by sending images directly to your neurons, you wouldn't be able to tell what was real.
Movie directors wouldn't need to hassle with actors who don't want to work with other actors and reality tv shows can last for many years without the characters aging.
I can't imagine what else would come of tech like this.

But basically the dude in the video tried to write code for a quantum computer at IBM (They have free to use machines online, under some sub-company). And it basically generated it's own assets each time it was told to make something. On his computer it took like 30 minutes + for a single asset, but he projected that it would take just a few seconds on a quantum computer, he never got the code working unfortunately but I believe he's still working on it.

@@daath144occultistmaster5 In order to go with your assertion that "hyper-realistic" is a meaningless term because "realistic" suffices, you'd have to subscribe to the ideology that realism is not a spectrum, that something is either realistic or unrealistic, that things cannot be slightly more realistic than other things. This is of course false. Two screenshots can both be realistic yet one may be more realistic than the other. An NPC's behavior could be just "realistic" in one game, meaning more realistic than we expected, but another's might be extremely realistic if it emulates a true intelligence.
Now onto the second issue: Debate is fine, and even extreme pedantry is alright as well. But what's utterly illogical is judging the whole of someone's intelligence based on some minor quibble you have about word choice. By your standards, even the smartest person in the world can be made to look dumb. In fact using your very own logic against you I can declare that your numerous grammar mistakes are evidence of "chaotic" thoughts, stupidity, and low IQ:
-"for an example" instead of "for example"
-"including under the umbrella of that definition" when it should be "included"
-Omission of the word "are" in "you don't grasp your own point and thus not able to"
-"replay" when it should be "reply"
-"dunninger kruger" when it should be "dunning kruger"
Wow 5 mistakes, that must make you 5 times as dumb as you thought I was.

@Daath144OccultistMaster You seem to confuse the two types of realism, Max Loh is speaking of. He writes, that he does not need realism/hyper-realism in the graphics of a game, but he would like realism/hyper-realism with regards to the behaviour of NPCs in a game. In other words: He would prefer a game with simple graphics but hyper-realistic NPC behaviour over a game with stunning graphics and poor NPC behaviour. As would I.

For those that couldn't understand the explanation here's a simplified breakdown:
0:40 - AI part 1 of the system takes in a video and tries to figure out what objects are in each frame (as seen in the block colored video), this is the segmentation network.
0:45 - Based on what AI part 1 sees, UE4 is used to build a 3D layout of objects like a game map (this is optional for replay, but is necessary for interactivity)
0:55 - AI part 2, the generator, is then used to build a new scene based on what's supposed to be in frame based on the 3D map (car here, building here, etc.).
AI part 2 can be trained on huge databases to know what combinations of pixels and objects makes sense and doesn't look fake.
So, what else makes this special? Basically you can give AI part 2 different combinations of segmentation maps (what objects are in scene) and it will build an image/video that makes as much sense as possible. No 3D models of objects are explicitly necessary, though if you wanted you could build a custom 3D map with object markers for the AI to fill in with whatever it thinks the scene should look like. You can also swap out a different AI part 2 trained on different scenes, for example a jungle, to replace the scene objects with jungle-related stuff.

While watching the video I was like: That is the most inpressive yet unimpressive video I have ever seen.
The fundamental happening is kind of impressive but the actual work done is not. They should have run some more AI on lightning and reflections for example, before making a video like this "look ma what I can make". Yeah, kid, maybe you should keep working on that some more before trying to show off your skills.
(Of course they will not share the actual state to the public, so my comment is only half "true".)

@@fadammte_aggst From a researcher's point of view, this is pretty impressive. The state-of-the-art used to be image-to-image synthesis since video was notoriously hard to keep consistent. This is especially true for objects affected by occlusion and camera panning. Their work introduces video-to-video synthesis which is quite a step above and must require some serious processing power to run in real-time. Even the image-only case used to take quite some time to run at any decent resolution.

Since NVidia has their majority audience in gamers, which is technically only because incidentially gamers are the majority of people who need high-level hardware, its safe to assume for what in 20 years will be the first _open_ world game.

The uses for something like this can't be calculated yet beyond the most immediate and obvious ones (for example, video games). In many cases, we can't yet imagine what people will do with this yet but as it develops and becomes available to more people, we'll start to see more. That said, as humans, we tend to (often need to) simulate a wide variety of things for a wide variety of reasons. Simulations in this case need to be as realistic as possible. Imagine, for example, we discovered today a way to make flying cars work very efficiently, and that most will be able to afford them, and that we could have them ready today. Well, we couldn't just sell them... laws need to be made, and safety tested. How do we test these things without endangering the very cities they need to be tested in? Simulations. A simulation, in this case, would need to (as accurately as we can) be able to simulate and test these flying cars under a huge number of circumstances, over large periods of time with a crazy number of variables.
To give a video game example - game developers could perhaps create worlds very easily by constructing them in 2D (for example, imagine top-down like google maps) and this technology could then perhaps generate the (increasingly realistic over time) graphics for things like buildings, sidewalks, other cars, their behaviors, pedestrians and their erratic and varying behaviors, etc. Right now all of that has to be designed "by hand" and pieced together, which is one of the reasons games these days are taking so long to make (and as a result costing so much money to develop). To give you an idea, GTA5 is estimated to have cost $265 Million to make... now, it has in that time made approximately $6 Billion (yea, with a "B"), but that up front cost is not something many developers can risk. With something like this kind technology, it could really open up games of that scope to more developers while simultaneously ramping up the realism of said games significantly.
Anyway, I am not an expert on this stuff at all, but these are some examples I think help illustrate the point of this stuff ;)

Fake reality, put a mask on top of reality. Make reality look happy, look grim, change faces, change licence plates, change streetsigns etc

Funny thing Is i'm more impressed by the superimposed artificial image tech they showed at the end rather than the main thing they showed throughout the video lol. I get the gist of how AI reproduced or repurposed images and video frames into a virtual environment run on UE4. But to make that fake coworker dancing thing look so realistic as opposed to what normal people do with after effects and such on youtube, I want to see a little bit of their process explained instead.

I wonder if films(Movies) will still have a purpose in the future when video games will look so realistic you wont be able to tell the difference between a movie or a video game.
