Been sitting on this one till BlackFriday. Plan to get the set and pulp Cthulhu. Like Dragonbane I live rolling under instead of coming up with targets etc. also makes it easier for solo. I’ve been looking for good Cthulhu esque movies. Wicker man, the void, color out of space are excellent to get into the mood
@@GldnMnky I don’t watch much in the way of ‘tv/streaming’ anymore as I just don’t have any unused time. That said, it looks interesting, it will be on the ‘if time becomes available’ list.
This is one of my favourite games to play or GM. I would encourage people wanting to play to read the short story "The call of Cthulhu" for flavour. As other posters have said, if you're fighting, things are going wrong. One of my players comes from min-maxing in DnD and finds the lack of progressing annoying, which is kind of misunderstanding the game setting. Good post, Justin, as always!
Dave, thanks for chiming in! My favorite session of Call of Cthulhu involved the players all dying by collapsing an Egyptian tomb around them, but in doing so, imprisoning the horror that was aiming to destroy the world. Not every game where a TPK would be the MOST successful session.
@@booksbricksandboards783 Yeah, it's a different mindset from most rpgs, mainly because of the way Lovecraft described his universe. I remember being struck by the quote about man's inability to see the universe as it really is being merciful, because that thought had never really occurred to me before. For your game, I would imagine that the players will be talking about that for years, which is the perfect example of a great game!
I need to pick up the Mystery Matrix still… also still haven’t gotten the solo handbook yet. I think having so many Alone Against The books is what is stopping me. I really enjoy those.
@@booksbricksandboards783 I highly recommend both. I love the Alone Against series as well, but the Solo Investigators Guide is more freeform and lets you craft your own adventure. It is less "on-rails."
Man... I am an absolute sucker for roll under mechanics. This sounds so fun. I play the Chaosium modules using Tiny Cthulhu rules, which is a blast. Anyway, great work as always!
Hello Justin, my favorite systems are Skill Based games and me and my group play the BRP and COC 7th! We are playing a low medieval fantasy campaign based on Fighting Fantasy books like: The Warlock of Firetop Mountain, Citadel of Chaos, Forest of Doom, City of Thieves and etc. And a Cthulhu campaign that pass here in Brazil, we play in turns every two weeks. One of my favorite system of all times and one that when you play and understand you can play basically any version of the game. By the way great review of the system!
Thank you Victor! I would love to see how BRP does in a long term fantasy campaign. I like Runequest, but I think the parts I liked most are the generic BRP aspects, whereas the specific Runequest stuff is less a draw for me . Guessing I would like BRP in a fantasy game .
@@booksbricksandboards783 I Recommend, give a shot and i think that you like. We play a campaing Conan Style, only humans, Warriors, Thiefs and Sorcerers no Cleric and has some fell Humanoid monster like Orcs, and me and my players We are really enjoying it! Is a Sandbox game so i have many of tables to generate adventures in the actual game time, it's really nice. And about RQ i think like you, the generic BRP are the best part of it.
I really need to try this game, but I am not used to RPG's or soloing one. I just like the idea of investigators, as I'm reading occult detective stories lately and enjoying them.
If you ever read a Choose Your Own Adventure book, they have solo books like that with dice for Call of Cthulhu. Alone Against the Flames is excellent.
Nice video overview of CoC 7e. Probably the single best RPG on the market today. I say this largely because CoC 7e is the only game I have not (yet) wanted to houserule. It just plays so well and it consistently delivers the game experience I hope it will. Cheers!
Fred, thanks for chiming in sir! I really enjoy it… the only thing I would ever house rule it for, would be to use it to run other games. I guess I could just grab the Basic RP to do the same thing, but there are things that CoC does with the Basic RP core that I just like better than the other implementations… specifically the degrees of success. Simple but effective! I think that the ol’ Algorithm has put me in ‘time out’, as my last couple videos just haven’t had much reach. Makes it all the more impactful that so many of you regular viewers are engaging. Really appreciate it!
Most of the time for sure… of course you could be fighting monsters, in which case you ONLY have a 75% chance to die, unless they have a Tommy Gun, in which case you are back to 98% again.
There is something that always itched me badly with Call of Cthulhu which is, when you read Lovecraft, he wrote in the 1920s, roughly, but he was a very modern writer, you see his explorer going to Antartica, you see in I think it is in Innsmouth they tried to kill Cthulhu with a destroyer (which is the best you could have in 1920 - nowadays would we translate that by a nuclear bomb). So Lovecraft was a modern writer and sorry but the Call of Cthulhu there miserably fail ; you play in the 20 which makes Lovecraft looks like an archaic writer which he wasn't. I would also add that considering how even the name of Lovecraft is nowadays tarnished in his own festival due to the fact he was a typical American from his time and got some of their "discutable" ideas, I don't want to add insult to injuries by considering him a 1920 writer he wasn"t. But it is a good game. Would I have it in paper version and me out of income I could also do what you did and sell the excess XD If I may a critic here... Don't emphasize combat. COC is not really about combat. Well you can kill one/two cultists on occasion, but this shouold NOT be the bread and butter.
Pral, I agree on the combat, that’s why I said that it should rarely be your answer to a situation in the game. I think we agree on most of what you said, which is pretty normal. Thanks for watching buddy!
Woooooo yesss 🎉
I aim to please Dean!

2nd favorite rpg, and this is easily its best edition so far. Streamlined without being dumbed down.
Agreed on that. I really like the changes they made. It made the other Basic RP games seem less polished in comparison(to me).

Would love to play in a CoC one-shot one day
It is a perfect format for the game, as you don’t have time to get attached before the character ends up dead or insane!
If you are fighting in CoC, you are losing. But probably not going insane, so...

Nothing else quite captures that style of horror like Call of Cthulhu does.
