Well the studios had their own standard on beauty because they believed that certain kind of beauty was more acceptable to the public eyes than the other. In the 30s, I think MGM tried to create their actresses to look like Greta Garbo.
Maria Osorio Tammy won the Emmy Award for her portrayal of Judy Garland in this movie! She was also cast as Sybil Dorset in the remake of Sybil and Marianne Mulvaney in "We Were The Mulvaneys" which was an Oorah book club book made into a TV movie. She's such a great actress!
Didn't Tammy also play Sybil in the made for tv remake? That girl is seriously talented. I assume she's just lip syncing to Judy's voice but she makes it look so authentic.

So much emphasis was and is placed on beauty. She may not have been a Lana Turner or Ava Gardner type of beauty but she was attractive and extremely talented. Don't know why they put so much pressure on her and she put on herself to be a bombshell when she had way more significant qualities like her amazing voice.
Back then the celebs didn't know. In this day and age they all know, all they care about is the money and fame. No sympathy here for this decades celebs. I only feel sympathy for celebs in the yesteryears and back then only.
You know why everyone loved Judy? Because she was relatable, pure, transparent. And really cared more about people then in it for the business. That's what made her a legend. And she was an incredible Mother.
I love Shirley Temple but thank goodness the part of Dorothy Gale went to Judy Garland instead. No one could have played that part better than her. A type of magic exuded from her.
Well, he was gay and an embarrassment! They had to move all the time to cover up his involvement with men. This is a much better film than the recent one!
Frances was slowly killed to give life to Judy. I wished her father could have lived to provide some protection. Maybe just maybe she would had it so rough in her later life. All she wanted was love!
@@iwantthetruthandnothingbut6521 No she has a point. Harvey Weinstein, Dan Schneider, Louis B. Mayer(and others we don't know about) were all sick preverts. Schneider and Mayer went after the kiddies while Weinstein went after the ladies. Those sickos threatened and intimated people like Marilyn Monroe, Shirley Temple, Corey Haim, Corey Feldman, and many more. They made these people believe they'd lose their job if they didn't go along with their disgusting agenda. I don't know about them all being Jewish or not but this stuff has always happened and still happens today. These are sick and powerful people that if you cross them they can make sure an actor or actress never works in Hollywood again. That is the saddest truth of it all.
I met Lorna about 10 years ago,,,my brothers neighbor she graciously gave us front row tickets to her concert acknowledged us and was quite a spit fire, she had so many wonderful stories how they would steal shoes in London hotels set to be polished to different doors, wonderful stories, Lorna is quite a lady!
Used. By practically everyone who was ever in her life. Judy Garland owned a voice that will never come again, and really? all it ever gave her was heartache and the knowledge that love is a commodity. Godspeed for one of the greatest talents that ever lived.
It's a shame. I remember even Bette davis admired her. she said an interview once that Judy had talented that only came around once per generation and it was such a shame she died so young.
Judy Garland is such a huge inspiration to me. Her voice was so beautiful, so powerful. It's sad that people treated her in a terrible manner and that she went through all of this. I've been listening to her for a few years now and I've seen this movie a lot. Which everytime I watch this or even hear her sing. I can't help but to love her even more.
Same here! I known Judy for my whole life. She's like my second mother to me. Her voice is so beautiful. And she's gorgeous and i don't know why they told her she was ugly.
Poor Judy. They chewed her body and youth up then spit her out. I could cry at the way she was told to take a pill to stay up then a pill to lay down. And for what? $$$$$$ for themselves. Shes left with an addiction. 💓💓💓Ms.Judy!
Yeah. And with the pills MGM had all their stars take them and then when they realized they were bad for them the stars had already become addicted. So it wasn't just Judy Garland.
I agree with Judy said at 18:50, the dirt on her father's grave was barely fresh when Ethel started dating Gilmore, if Frank were around and found out, he'd be spinning in his grave. PERIOD!!!!!!!!!!
In a different movie starring the girl that played Annie in the 80's. There's a scene where judy catches her mom and Mr. Gilmore making out in the kitchen long before Frank died.
Davis truly analyzes Garland and presents a fully formed character. Now that I've seen the trailer for Renee Zellweger's mimicry in "JUDY," Davis' version is even more brilliant.
I feel so badly for Judy's dad. He had the talent, like Judy, and he was the underdog, like Judy. She was the misfit genius everyone beat up on but in the end the one everyone rooted for. Her dad would have been proud like crazy. :)
They did a brilliant job casting this! The girl who played Judy was perfect for the role from top to bottom and the youthful, mischievous exuberance that Mickey Rooney had was perfectly captured by the actor here! 🙂
Judy Garland had so much talent and goodness in her. It is a shame that others around her did not see this. She will always be remembered as a wonderful Dorothy.
Tammy Blanchard was REMARKABLE!! Wish they had kept her on until at least Annie Get Your Gun. Felt they started Judy Davis too soon. Still a wonderful biopic.
"You wanted this...." "You don't have a choice..." Evil mother; Judy wanted this, but she was a kid who had no idea what she was getting into. As for not having a choice, that is a vile lie; her mother could have taken her off the contract and into a more normal life, but her mother wanted that money her daughter made. Judy was an exceptional talent and with that comes people who will want to exploit that.
The Nuharoo The mother was a greedy talentless ice cold bitch who couldn’t even get a live show at vaudeville, never mind singing even half as beautiful as her dearly departed daughter, Judy.
@@philip.a.8408I truly do think that if only Judy had realized her power nad true Independence, she would have left her mother wihtout having to marry at all. She was so brilliant and talented, but no guidance and no business savvy and she ended up ruined.
One of the most heartbreaking things I have ever listened to was the tapes Judy Garland made in later years as she was thinking of writing an autobiography. She was clearly messed up on barbiturates and seemed so crazed and angry.
I don't think she ever got to finish the book since she died? But I think I heard rumors that someone out there took over after for her finishing it and publishing it.
@@princesspeachfan100 it was never finished. Gerald Clarke wrote a great biography on her called Get Happy. He found an advertisement in a newspaper archive that mentioned she was writing a book that was going to be published by penguin random house. He was able to find the archives of Judy Garland’s unfinished autobiography and put a lot of excerpts from it in his biography.
It's horrible how those people destroyed the life of this little girl. She passed through so much pain and sorrow... Poor Frances, she was a very good and sweet girl.
When you look at footage of Judy Garland from those days, you can see that although the actress has been made-up to look like her, she has none of Judy's gravitas. It's awful that they cast a young actress who is thin, tall, beautiful and a perfect "Hollywood" ingenue. Wasn't that a big point of the tragedy of Judy's early years? That she felt short, dumpy and fat compared to the starlets of the Hollywood machine? It's insulting, and sad. In many ways, all you have to do is watch part 1 of this to understand that things in Hollywood... never change. Yeah, #metoo was a thing. But maybe it's over now, because people really, in the end, don't care. Hey, she looks like Judy! Yay!
*The CameraCat* Jesus! Even when they get the casting almost perfect, there are STILL contrarians to complain. Face it: They'll never, EVER find anyone EXACTLY like Judy Garland! But this was a close simulation. (Sheesh! Talk about nitpicking!)

Actually, she (b. December 14, 1976) was 23 when the movie was shot in mid-2000 and had turned 24 by the time the film was broadcast on ABC (February 25 - February 26, 2001).

Tammy really looks like Judy Garland, so effortlessly in every pose. It’s heartbreaking to imagine what she’s been through. One of the original Hollywood machines
They treated her terribly and then she had to pay the consequences leaving her very ill just so this big asshole can make his big money. How depressing this is for this poor girl.
I think Judy Davis, who plays Garland as an adult, (shown here towards the end of the video), has her voice and mannerisms and how she expressed herself in later life mastered perfectly. That’s when she should’ve come in, to portray the actress in the last years of her life. Bringing her in to portray the “Meet me in St Louis” days, when she’s supposed to be 22, was too early.
Judy Garland was a beautiful woman. That voice was truly a gift from God, and the studio had no clue what they had on thier hands. Her mother was a beast to her, and it's so sad that the studio execs refused to let her grow up and be the marvelous star that she could have been.
Tammy Blanchard owned this as Judy. No one IS Judy, but she really did an exceptional job bringing her to life in this miniseries. I remember when this first aired; and the ad came on for it. I couldn't believe it!
Judy deserved better. She was the dictionary definition of BEAUTIFUL. How dare you MGM. “You will be the envy of all of them, with your hands in cement at Grauman’s Chinese...” - for telling the future that was 100% true.
I know. Its so sad :'( But now she is in the arms of Jesus where she finally found a better Love, the Best Love, than the one shed been searching for here. Rip Baby
I never thought I'd ever hear a better voice than Whitney Houston but my goodness Judy's voice is truly a gift from heaven. I just hate how Hollywood destroyed both of them and continues to destroy some of the best talent ever.
@@martha-anastasia That's not true. You obviously haven't seen the Bodyguard or her perform the Star spangled banner. Whitney had problems later in her career yet in the 80s and 90s she was a force and a powerhouse of a vocalist and performer. Jordan Harris that was the most retarded thing they could ever say that she "was hunchbacked" what the hell?!😡
@Janetta Martin she just mad that she is ugly... Inside and out!
lynn pabon the elite hero you need to read the comment again, particularly the last line, saying she was the most beautiful woman he ever saw! Wow how rude!
So much emphasis was and is placed on beauty. She may not have been a Lana Turner or Ava Gardner type of beauty but she was attractive and extremely talented. Don't know why they put so much pressure on her and she put on herself to be a bombshell when she had way more significant qualities like her amazing voice.
@@z15503 is that jealousy I see you ugly rat.
This is by far one of the most accurate biopics I've ever seen, Tammy and Judy Davis are just phenomenal
Hello Jenna, How are you doing?
I feel so sorry for celebrities in general. rip judy, I've been studying you recently, hope you rest easy darling.
Jesse Kaufman same here . I realized life isn’t as good as we assume it is for them.
Back then the celebs didn't know. In this day and age they all know, all they care about is the money and fame. No sympathy here for this decades celebs. I only feel sympathy for celebs in the yesteryears and back then only.
They choose to be performers.
I literally bawled my eyes out when I saw her dressed as Dorothy... WOW! Crazy how she looks exactly like Judy!
Heavenbound Daughter Amen ❤️❤️❤️
Mishka Mental yep that's the reality about getting parts even until now
my God!:( i never though she went throug soo much! it breaks me. the life she went through.
Shirley would've ruined "Oz".
If Shirley had played Dorothy, you'd be praising her right now instead of Judy.
judy garland was so beautiful I can't believe they were so mean to her
She didn't meet the ideal of the time.
She was no bombshell, but she was adorable. Well, up until the drugs and age made her she rapidly.
poor thing ...
she was workhorse don't you get it .you thought they treated her better so if she was pretty? good one Priscilla Montoya
WhatTaDooo What ? SHE NEVER USE DRUGS don't lie please
She died from a drug overdose... so yeah. She did drugs.

I am SO impressed with the casting and acting in this movie! Both Judy Garland and Mickey Rooney's actors look and act just like them. Great movie!
My jaw DROPPED when she’s actually in the Dorothy costume. That’s INCREDIBLE. She IS Judy!
Judy Garland’s mother was selfish and she didn’t even shed a tear when her husband died
Priscilla Jane Fumero he was apparently gay and she was a greedy bitch
@ Peaches - I was making a declarative statement. No more or less.
@@theretroguyy5399 that was judy garlands life
She was bitter because he was gay And was unfaithful to her throughout the marriage with other men
Well, he was gay and an embarrassment! They had to move all the time to cover up his involvement with men. This is a much better film than the recent one!
Frances was slowly killed to give life to Judy. I wished her father could have lived to provide some protection. Maybe just maybe she would had it so rough in her later life. All she wanted was love!
@Lady Fervor wow, someone off their meds?? 😏
He spent the money too, user
Tammy Blanchard steals the show. Fantastic as young Judy and Emmy award winner for the performance too💕
I met Lorna about 10 years ago,,,my brothers neighbor she graciously gave us front row tickets to her concert acknowledged us and was quite a spit fire, she had so many wonderful stories how they would steal shoes in London hotels set to be polished to different doors, wonderful stories, Lorna is quite a lady!
Used. By practically everyone who was ever in her life.
Judy Garland owned a voice that will never come again,
and really? all it ever gave her was heartache and the
knowledge that love is a commodity.
Godspeed for one of the greatest talents that ever lived.
It's a shame. I remember even Bette davis admired her. she said an interview once that Judy had talented that only came around once per generation and it was such a shame she died so young.
Ms Garland.... your tragedies do NOT out weigh your triumphs!! You are beyond talented and you are eternal!!
Hello Bridget, How are you doing?
Judy Garland is such a huge inspiration to me. Her voice was so beautiful, so powerful. It's sad that people treated her in a terrible manner and that she went through all of this. I've been listening to her for a few years now and I've seen this movie a lot. Which everytime I watch this or even hear her sing. I can't help but to love her even more.
Some of the best people get taken advantage of and abused. It's sad really
Kayden✨ we share the same feelings towards Judy ❤
Same here! I known Judy for my whole life. She's like my second mother to me. Her voice is so beautiful. And she's gorgeous and i don't know why they told her she was ugly.
Cant believe they made her go
On a diet even though she was a
Curvy girl.
Time 3:28PM Mon 8/22/22
So it wasn't just Judy Garland.
sadly thats how Hollywood and the entertainment industry is and always will be..
what were those pills?
I think meth.
Oh my :'(
I agree with Judy said at 18:50, the dirt on her father's grave was barely fresh when Ethel started dating Gilmore, if Frank were around and found out, he'd be spinning in his grave. PERIOD!!!!!!!!!!
In a different movie starring the girl that played Annie in the 80's. There's a scene where judy catches her mom and Mr. Gilmore making out in the kitchen long before Frank died.
He was gay tbh. He'd been sneaking around with men when they were married.
She looks and acts so much like Judy, even Judy would be proud ❤️
Davis truly analyzes Garland and presents a fully formed character. Now that I've seen the trailer for Renee Zellweger's mimicry in "JUDY," Davis' version is even more brilliant.
Good god, Tammy Blanchard's performance (and the make-up work) is just amazing. Such a cruel world that Judy found herself in.
she does an EXCELLENT Judy!
I feel so badly for Judy's dad. He had the talent, like Judy, and he was the underdog, like Judy. She was the misfit genius everyone beat up on but in the end the one everyone rooted for. Her dad would have been proud like crazy. :)
Such a remarkable story. MGM literally owned their actors. The only one who truly had her side was Mickey.
I started watching this on a whim and wasn’t expecting to find this a really well done, dramatic movie. The casting and acting are solid too
Stars like these will never be around again.
They did a brilliant job casting this! The girl who played Judy was perfect for the role from top to bottom and the youthful, mischievous exuberance that Mickey Rooney had was perfectly captured by the actor here! 🙂
I've always been the biggest Judy Davis fan, but it was jarring when she took over the part, as Blanchard was SO perfect!
She looks exactly like Judy Garland.
Where the FRICK did they find such a PERFECT Judy lookalike?!!! It's UNCANNY! Cheekbones, lips and all!!!
It makes me happy watching something that's an old movie and how everything looks different from now. Sometimes I wish I was born in those times.
Im thinking that same thing as i read your comnent.
"You wanted this...."
"You don't have a choice..."
Evil mother; Judy wanted this, but she was a kid who had no idea what she was getting into. As for not having a choice, that is a vile lie; her mother could have taken her off the contract and into a more normal life, but her mother wanted that money her daughter made. Judy was an exceptional talent and with that comes people who will want to exploit that.
The Nuharoo
The mother was a greedy talentless ice cold bitch who couldn’t even get a live show at vaudeville, never mind singing even half as beautiful as her dearly departed daughter, Judy.
@@philip.a.8408I truly do think that if only Judy had realized her power nad true Independence, she would have left her mother wihtout having to marry at all. She was so brilliant and talented, but no guidance and no business savvy and she ended up ruined.
She really had the power to take her off?
Her mother looks like an evil old bat.
@@brunetteone4082 Judy called her the real “Wicked Witch of the West”
What do expect from a woman who was taken advantage of and abused all her life.
Baby Francis Gum, you are so very LOVED. Beautiful inside and out. rip
It's horrible how those people destroyed the life of this little girl. She passed through so much pain and sorrow... Poor Frances, she was a very good and sweet girl.
Holy shit the part of her as Dorothy is almost scary how much she looks like her!
Rachella It truly is.
The actress won an Emmy for playing Judy.
Yes, but they should have kept the make up, the rest of the film she doesn't look her
When you look at footage of Judy Garland from those days, you can see that although the actress has been made-up to look like her, she has none of Judy's gravitas.
Wow this actress playing Judy is fabulous! Couldn't have cast anyone better!
Tammy was the spitting image of Judy! And the guy who played Mickey was great too!
Fake teeth? NOSE DISCS? There was nothing wrong with her the way she was.
Damn right - Judy Garland was beautiful inside and out.
me too movement was needed 4 her😁
Her hair needed some working on.
Imagine being told all that when you were 13. You don’t fit their mold, they rip your body apart to the point of going to a surgeon’s office.
That was common back then. They did some crazy stuff to Debbie Reynolds, too.
Judy deserves so much more in life. Evil people in her life who pushed her too hard, even for a little girl.
This series won 5 Emmy Awards for Outstanding Costumes for a Miniseries, Movie or a Special - Part 1, Outstanding Hairstyling for a Miniseries, Movie or a Special, Outstanding Makeup for a Miniseries, Movie or a Special, Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Miniseries or a Movie - Tammy Blanchard for playing Young Judy Garland and Outstanding Lead Actress in a Miniseries or a Movie - Judy Davis for playing Judy Garland.
Tammy Blanchard is absolutely amazing here! Doubly so considering the fact that she was 25 when she made this telefilm.
Actually, she (b. December 14, 1976) was 23 when the movie was shot in mid-2000 and had turned 24 by the time the film was broadcast on ABC (February 25 - February 26, 2001).
@@Chapin-pc2kz LOL Still well out of her teens.
I absolutely LOVE this film, written by Lorna Luft. It's authentic and really well cast. The music is perfection.

They SURPRISE her with the role of Dorothy for her birthday and the next scene she's REPLACED and then given the role AGAIN. Jeez, they were so cruel.
I can't stand parents like Judy garlands mom... They only GAF about how THEY will benefit off the child.. AND NOT THE CHILD'S BEST INTEREST AT HEART!! 👿👿👿
Tammy really looks like Judy Garland, so effortlessly in every pose. It’s heartbreaking to imagine what she’s been through. One of the original Hollywood machines
I would have preferred they keep Tammy thru most of the movie.
Being a child star sucked back than. They wouldn't even let her see her dying father. Smh
That's fucked up
greatest female performer ever gone too soon RIP Judy xxxx
They treated her terribly and then she had to pay the consequences leaving her very ill just so this big asshole can make his big money. How depressing this is for this poor girl.
The actress who plays her as a teen looks just like her. Great casting job.
That Mickey guy is so charismatic, Tammy is just fantastic....great casting!!!
I thank God for giving me considerate and loving parents everyday! The opposite would have been this.
Her father was lovely.
Poor dear! I know the family does not want us to think of her life story as tragic but it tugs at the ole heart strings.
Rip Baby
She was hardly the definition of beauty, let's be real.
@@henryjackson2357 She wasn’t ugly neither.
I never thought I'd ever hear a better voice than Whitney Houston but my goodness Judy's voice is truly a gift from heaven. I just hate how Hollywood destroyed both of them and continues to destroy some of the best talent ever.
Agree
Whitney had a good voice, but can't compare with Judy. Judy was a star, Whitney had no star quality...it was mostly hype
@@martha-anastasia That's not true. You obviously haven't seen the Bodyguard or her perform the Star spangled banner. Whitney had problems later in her career yet in the 80s and 90s she was a force and a powerhouse of a vocalist and performer. Judy was a great singer with a nice voice they are from different eras so their no point in comparison in who is a better singer.
@@martha-anastasia This is the biggest crock I've ever heard, to say Whitney was a 'hype' is outright delusional. Her voice transcended genre and was praised by even the nitpickiest of vocal experts. They picked such awesome actors for this show. During the Wizard of Oz scenes it was incredible
The way MGM treated her was disgraceful the girl just wanted to be loved
