Texas Black Rat Snake. He's not dangerous, but he can kill your chickens. We had 2 chickens killed by one, they can't actually eat them, but they try and fail. The best thing to do is remove it, they are not venomous, and are good for the woods ecosystem. Relocate him to the woods. Don't kill him.
We love rat snakes! They are very important to our farm because we have a lot of mice in the barn. I have to admit, when I first saw one on our land, I screamed. For a full minute. I had to really change my mindset because snakes have a bad reputation. After learning about them, I felt more comfortable. I can even remove them myself (using a long stick with rope that my husband made for me). They absolutely love to eat the eggs so in the spring and summer I have to run upstairs every hour (in between my clients appointments) and take any eggs into our house Snakes can smell eggs so well, and you're correct, they absolutely can strike chickens and we don't want that. I'm so sorry two of your chickens were killed. Thanks for the comment! We are enjoying reading them and connecting with people.
@@farmchronicles2964 Can you snake proof the chicken coop instead? Or do hens lay randomly throughout the day? (I seriously don’t know.) Having to race down every hour seems like a lot! @@farmchronicles2964 - Big one there. I had a 6' long one in my big coop. I wondered where all the eggs had gone. Well, the girls started laying in their smaller coop in the corner. But once they get in the chicken coop and they realize that's where the food is it's time to get rid of them
I had one of those about 2 feet away from me when I was working under a trailer in the mountains of North Carolina....my boss laughed. Said he never seen someone move so fast.
Wow snakes are scary, last week a 4ft 7” long snake which I believe might be a gopher snake (hard to distinguish it for rattle snake at eye level 2 ft away struggling with a rack a pinion under a 2001 Honda accord in your driveway) but man did I jump for my pellet popper fast as shiiit and my homie said my hops were as far-apart as Michael Jorden’s hops when they made his shoe emblem! 😅
I wasn’t so calm the first time I saw a snake or the second time. Or even the third. I read about them (they’re not poisonous, they eat mice, they’re a valuable part of the ecosystem, etc). They can bite and cause harm but they’re not poisonous so that made me feel a lot better. I’ve been able to catch them and pull them away from the coop but I just don’t have the heart to kill them. The first time I ever saw one I screamed for a full 30 seconds. I’m getting better but they startle me.

You can drill about a half inch hole in the side boards of your nest, then he will go in on nest get an egg and go part way through to next nest and get another egg, he cant wrape to break the eggs to consume so it makes it easy to catch him. Return him to a better place as black snack kill poison snakes, rates and mice. Put some of that real tiny wire around your coop and any hole that he can get through. Hope that helps.
My mom had an almost 16 foot python get its head stuck trying to get in a coop of about 30 chickens and they all pecked his head so much it killed him even got themselves a little snack out of it lol . Lucky the snake got stuck or it’d be a completely different story
I have bird netting (loosely) around the base of my run and coop. If it’s too tight, the snake will go through it, but loosely, it’ll get tangled up in the netting. I actually had one trapped in the netting earlier this week. I was skeptical when I first read about this tip, but now I’m a believer. Cheaper than hardware cloth.
That looks like my resident black snake. That snake scared the life out of me when i first seen him, but I am glad he or she is around. I haven't seen any rodents.

Yes the elevation of those long boards would have to be closer to the ground enough to be a some inches deep going across. Some elongated 1x8’s that have as much length of the bottom of the chicken coop could do.
