I was always a huge Space:1999 fan. As a child (11-12 when the series aired), and, even as an adult, I was impressed with the realism of the hardware used on the show. The suits looked realistic, as well as the Eagles. It's as if the idea was to create a slightly higher tech, yet you could see into the past in the design work. Take the Eagle cockpit area. The triangular windows with the black trim area are a direct "reuse" of the real lunar lander. Everything looked very plausible. As for the suits... to me, the main thing is to appear pressurized, and it seems they solved that with the padding sewn in as you show in the video did the trick, and it was really neat to see "under the hood" (or bonnet in your case!) to show the various parts and how they went together. Also, the suit looks flawless, so your repair work is just great, you really did a great job there. Have you considered making the front and back pieces to go with it? You should, would make for a heck of a halloween costume!
john ... When the show came out in the second half of the 70s, many of the things used on Moonbase Alpha seemed to be pure science fiction, but... we're already using them! Personalized video transmitters with built-in video are like our cell phones, screen displays with built in micorcamera where you can talk with and see anyone, are like Skype. In addition, international orbiting stations and satellites around the earth are also reality. If it had built a base on the moon it would be international and probably would almost look like to Moonbase Alpha. The only "mistake" was not foreseeing the massive spread of computers. The Moonbase Allpha is archaic even the poorest computer works best. But you know, no one is perfect. Rip Commader Koenigg
Brilliant I'm thrilled that someone owns and is taking such good care of these wonderful props from a classic sci-fi series. I realize Martin Landau was the star. But, Victor Bergman and Maya were fantastic characters, albeit in different seasons, so you must be super pleased. Cheers
Thanks, I am glad you enjoyed this very old video. The suit is in amazing condition for being 50 years old, and was actually out on public display a few months ago.
@@Spaceman042 50 years old? Surely not! I remember watching Space 1999 on TV during its original run. Looking back, the production values on all those Anderson shows, especially the props, models and special effects, was out of this world. Has anyone designed a cooler looking spacecraft than an Eagle? It's a shame Ron Moore hasn't picked up the mantle and relaunched the show as a movie or a series. After all, he did admit to stealing the intro credits for Galactica from Space 1999 😃
Thanks for posting this very detailed video. Space: 1999 has a nostalgic place in my heart. I'm still a fan of all the fabulous art direction of this production.
Thanks, luckily I was in the right place at the right time and had the best part of a thousand pounds to spend, which is now very cheap at today's inflated prices. One of my very favourite items in my collection.
WOW!!! That is a superb original item to own. Thanks for taking the time to put a very professional little piece together. It was great seeing those indivudal parts all get the coverage they did too along with the commentary as well. Classic stuff!!
I've just started watching the series since it aired the first time. It was my favorite science fiction TV show while growing up along with Star Trek TOS. Thank you for showing this! I'd love to make one for a Halloween costume someday.
Very cool! These were among my favorite space suits also. They reminded me of the 2001: A Space Odyssey suits. Thanks for showing us some of your collection!
Thank you for taking the time to show off your moon-suit. As we all know, the theatrical production of a space opera does need to have props to sustain our suspension of disbelief. The moon has a very thin atmosphere, and requires apparatus to keep warm, and breathe a greater degree of oxygen rich air. (It might be like attempting to set camp on the summit of Mount Everest at best. Without any wind whatsoever). The first season was best for science -fiction fans everywhere. I imagine that these would be best suited lunar surface activity. The movie 2001, a space odyssey, was very similar in many ways. Many people all over the world stand in awe of your superior collection.
I still have the packaging in thick paper with all the photos and printings on that the episodes/films where delived in to our countries TV Network back in the early 70's. I called our TV Network back then when I was very young and they were kind enough to mail me that plus some black and white printed photos from the series as well. :)
Ok now i am offically impressed!! How did you get your hands on that!!! Thank you for sharing this. Really interesting to see what the actors and actresses had to wear. Am suprised the suit is not padded on the inside more but i guess they had to make it wearable and give space for the actors to do their stuff in! Pity your video is not in an extras section of the DVD boxset for Space 1999, that would be a real treat for fans! :)
Awesome space suit. I have made a few helmets out of a thin but dense cardboard. After coated with a polyurethane its as hard as plastic. then I cut and use Plexiglas to make the face shield.
Space:1999 is STILL my all-time favorite show. Ever. I was on the Eagle Forum when they were selling the Alpha filming model for $16,000 a few years back. Ah, if I wasn't married..?? I would EASILY have bought it, just for the international bragging rights, and to keep my 'second home' safe for posterity.
It was sold off by Phil Rae, who was well known for collecting movie/tv props, especially from Gerry Anderson productions. The costume had been on display for around 15 years at various locations in Blackpool and then Alton Towers.
I bought it nearly 20 years ago now, so I'm not too sure - I just remember that it was rather expensive. It was actually very filthy so I had to wash it 3 times - unfortunately when I put it in the wash tub it absorbed all the water, so I had to fill the bath to wash it in!!
THANK YOU soooo so much for sharing this with us. I'm planning to do a replica MOTORCYCLE helmet, so if anybody has advice for me on that one, I'm very open to suggestions. If I can find some bright orange riding clothes, at the very least a jacket, boots etc, I'd like to continue the theme. Perhaps even a knapsack?
nice catch! i used to love space: 1999 but i've only got a couple old comics and a t-shirt. i'm curious to ask what you paid but i won't. i'm guessing if it used to be a museum piece i imagine it was pretty pricy, even if it was in fix-it-up condition. anyway, thanks for sharing that. little trip down memory lane.

@@davidsisson6353 Of course, that explains what happened between series 1 & 2..they all wore that faulty suit. Just a shame they didn't pass it on to Tony... Hoping you still got the suit, it's true sci fi treasure!
Why dont you make the front and and oxygen tank for it?, it would make a great video. Get hold of the yellow boots, if they are standard they won't be very hard to scource, then try it on...
The boots aren’t made anymore but I have found very similar ones since the video was made. I did build the chest pack and restore an original backpack for someone else, but they are quite large items and I decided not to have them myself.

Space: 1999 will always be one of my all-time favorite sci-fi shows!!! Season 1, episode Dragon's Domain, is my favorite episode.

Excellent overview of what is also one of my favorite science fiction spacesuits.
Amazing costume. Absolutely love it. Ive just bought the sixteen twelve paul morrow helmet. Absolutely gorgeous 1.1 version from the show
