They will continue to do me dream, and this intergalactic journey on the Alfa moon base will be endless! "Remember us! Remember us!" shouts Sandra Benes at the end of the 49th episode shot in 1999. I will be with them, and in the company of the one I have always loved, Zienia Merton. It will have been a very long wait ... Oh ! Zienia! Nice, beautiful and sweet Lady!
Thank you very much for your passionate and very personal comment. It is interesting to see that no matter how our lives are (or have been so far), this TV series still triggers different types of emotion. This means that the show was really well made. Sorry a fellow fan like you is not feeling happy at the moment; I truly hope you might find the strength and will to fight your demons.
@@martinlegomovie In 1995, at the 1995 French convention in Lyon, Zienia Merton made this judicious remark: "We actors did not know that this series would be such a success when we were shooting it." Watching the series on DVD or on the Web hurts me too much, when I started working at La Poste, I used the phiosophy and the tirades of the series to express myself, life is so well described in this space-opera! It's really us, it looks like us. It encouraged me to work well, to learn my job as a postman and to have promotions. Unfortunately, my bosses have decided otherwise: they have to demotivate me, to disgust me with the work, eliminating internal competitions to replace them with pseudo-facies exams, mutations as it suits them ... They also managed to keep all the money for them, blocking salaries, in short, they want to take everything from you, and it's done: I'm going to find myself with a ridiculous pension of 1000 € after 42 years of contributions. Jean Michel Charpin, is the minister, who increased the working time from 37.5 years to 42 by age reduction. Another twisted socialist, even if he went to the Ecole Polytechnique. I was counting on my work to make up for my university failures, but it was nothing. I have the will, but where can I find the strength to fight these internal demons, if I have no more? Because in addition, these frustrations and disappointments only exacerbated them further ... I'm disgusted with life, haven't even found a human female soul to lean on. All the women I have known have not succeeded in making me forget Zienia! His memory is so present in my memory. It seems to me that she is talking to me, that she is waiting for me where she is: she must really get bored in paradise!
@@Yvette5432 Thank you for sharing the comment from Zienia. She was really nice when I met her in person at a convention in Manchester. You are certainly right: 1000 € after 42 years of contributions is not fair, but unfortunately we live in difficult times and I know a lot of people here in the UK who lives with much less (pension schemes here are not really great). People of Alpha taught us how to make the most of the little they had through determination - yes, it was fiction, but I suppose the philosophy is still valid.

So you teach in the final year, you hold the CAPES option chemistry, which means Certificate of Professional Aptitude for Secondary Education. I don't know the English equivalent, but it fits that. Perhaps you even have the chemistry option aggregation, which would allow you to teach in a higher chair: preparatory classes, faculties or IUT of chemistry; University Institute of Chemistry, technical education body created in 1969, just after the events of May 68 and attached to general education. This brings together several departments: chemistry, electricity, mechanical engineering, computer method and management. Keep giving me details. I saw that you liked some classical songs like me. I don't know if you like film music songwriters like Jerry Goldsmith or Ennio Morricone...
Unfortunately, I can't teach at university level but I am fine where I am. Yes, I like soundtracks, especially Morricone. Lately, I have enjoyed the Eternals (Marvel movie) soundtrack.
By the way, Martin, I forgot to tell you this: I saw on a photo that Zienia had a two-year-old older sister. They are photographed side by side. Moreover, I learned on the web on some sites, that she was a mother of three children, which could explain her move from London to the countryside. When you saw her, she didn't tell you anything about it? It's as interesting as it is disturbing. I found the meaning of the first name Zienia or Xenia, it is not a Burmese first name but Greek, and very given in Russia. In Ancient Greece, Xenia (ξενία / xenía), remains the Greek concept of hospitality, and, by extension, gifts offered to a guest. The relationship of hospitality takes place under the protection of Zeus (Xénios) and Athena (Xénia). So Zienia is hospitable like Sandra Benes, like she was in life: lovable and caring. Now, I understand what I missed, and all because of Madame Mark Karppeles, a member of the French fan club, who knew how to disgust me so well with this series, during the Lyon Convention in 1993 !!! Hello Bernard, nice to see you are still around. I didn't know the link between Gerry Anderson and Tezuka, thank you for that. I used to watch Princess Sapphire as a kid in Italy. Great stuff! I wouldn't say it is disturbing the fact that Zienia didn't reveal anything about her family. Many actors keep their private lives away from their business. It is understandable. On the other hand, if I had asked, she might have told me more. Too late now.
Love seeing all the old props, I am a great fan of season one, but I don't regard season two as legitimate Space 1999. Season two is a Freibergian corruption and debasement of Gerry Anderson's concept. It is an insult to the original unique, thought provoking and atmospheric series.
It would be nice maybe to have a Space 1999 convention that only had a Season 1 theme in terms of props and sets. When I watch this movie I see a lot of season 2 which takes me back but to the wrong season.
The thing I liked about Season 2 the most was Maya and they did had a few good stories. Too bad it maintained the season one approach and the show was still on the air today.
Please list the names of the panelists in your description. I recognize one person Nick Tate? Danggg is that Catherine Schell? I can't tell from the audio R I P Mr. Martin Landau our Commander Koenig RI P Mr. Barry Morse R I P Mr. Tony Anholt
Yes, I should have done that. Here they are. At min 5.30 Nick Tate. At min. 5.39 he is joined by (left to right) Christopher Penfold (script writer), Catherine Schell and Anton Phillips. The blond guy next to him is one of the organisers. Then his place is taken by Prentis Hancock. At min. 6.37, Brian Johnson (special effects), on the extreme left, his son, Guy. Yes, the Commander has gone. Sad day for us Space fans.
Thank you for your kind comments Alex. There have just been a similar convention in Parsippany, New Jersey (USA). I am not aware of any conventions in UK any time soon. Let's hope someone organise it.
martin ... Thank you for the reply. The US is too far away and we hope someone is organizing a convention, also because time goes by. If you know something about some conventions in Europe, please tell us.
That Zienia understood that you knew certain things about her private life, when you shouldn't know, might upset her, to the point of not talking to you anymore, or allowing you to be photographed with her. I hope you're not like me: a former locomotive engineer turned postman, trained as a chemist! Curious mix! Zienia would not stop widening her adorable big eyes! Poor Zienia! His big eyes open to the world definitely closed!!! Just thinking about it hurts, very badly... What a state her body must be in, for almost four years since she left!! But why, damn it, why??!! Maybe you work as a journalist, since you often go to these conventions, or maybe you belong to the Fanderson club, which would be useful for me: I would still learn things that the sites on the web do not say.
No, I am just a science teacher with a passion for Space: 1999 and other sci-fi series. I used to go to convention until a few years ago as a regular fan. I have been a member of Fanderson in the past, but not anymore. I would like to go back to attend conventions one day but it is difficult now.
Science teacher - physics, chemistry or science teacher but natural (biology)? At what level ? Terminale or first year students? And which sections: literature, science, economics?
I answer you in French, because in English, Google finds my disrespectful remarks almost offensive, you can always retranslate. I really have a knack for making people uncomfortable: Zienia would have looked askance at me to the point of not speaking to me anymore.
I forgot: I hate the second season of cosmos, unfortunately, in the American fan clubs, it is preferred to the first...While in England, it's rather the opposite, but the actors don't care about this detail , as long as we talk about them... All this is the fault of Gerry Anderson: he underestimated his means, believing that the series would have the same success in the USA as in Europe, finally, to return to his money, he was obliged to scuttle it in the way of which we know. The Fanderson Club has lost many of its members, including you. As much as Gerry Anderson had extraordinary showmanship, he was not a shrewd businessman.
Question teaching, you validated a QTS (qualified teacher status) which allows you to teach until third, with pupils of 15 years. In France, this corresponds to PEGC: Professorship in General Education of Colleges. Frankly, I thought you had candidates for the baccalaureate (British A-level). I'm not talking about the Bachelor's degree, nor the Master's degree, which are essential university degrees to prepare for a QTS. About Morricone, we can learn to play the piano "Sacco and Vanzetti" music from the film by Giuliano Montaldo (1971), Joan Baez had composed the lyrics "Here's to you", which were then adapted into French by Georges Moustaki. Look on the web to play Sacco and Vanzetti, the piano teacher explains in French but we can translate, otherwise I will translate it for you. And Princess Sapphire, did you read my directions? Sacred trick as you say, except that for me, it is a passion, to the point of having written a book about it: "Princess Sapphire: the Secrets of the Kingdom of Silver". Unfortunately, Google Books was asking me too much money, I had to give it up. Zienia could have told me her publisher for her book, but it's already too late, for God's sake!
Yes, you are right: with QTS I can teach to A-Level but I have never had the chance to do it. Not much time to play the piano but I love the music, especially the solo trumpet in the orchestral version. As per your book, why don't you try to publish with Amazon (look for Kindle Direct Publishing).
You are not a professor with the agregation, you do not teach at the level of preparatory classes, first and second cycle university. My opinion on the book of Zienia Merton: "Anecdotes and armadillos", it is not she who wrote the text but Robert E. Wood under the dictation of Zienia. This man died in 1999 at the age of 73, the book came out in 2005, so I deduce that Zienia tackled her work ten years before, in 1995. I said to myself: she was not well educated to write a book , she who had not studied literature. How could I have liked it, I didn't even read it! As there is no French translation, it didn't interest me: I don't read English well enough to understand it, and that's a shame...And that risks upsetting me to the point of take malicious pleasure in destroying it instead of reading it, as I did for "The english book of railways" (1978) by Michael Oldham. However, there were two other solutions: either I contacted a translation company: at 400 words per page out of a volume of 200 pages, it cost €8,000! The word is 0.1 €, 400 words per page, so a page 40 €, and the book has about 200 pages, which is 8000 €, a solution that is far too expensive. The third solution, more manual, was to introduce the book by hand word for word, page by page, almost chapter by chapter on Google Translate, proofread and arrange the translation, because Google tends to translate in little negro, print it then page by page, which represented a tediously long and interminable work!!! I don't know if my pc is equipped to fit a pen on it to scan texts, and I don't know if it's possible to scan the text of a book. So I don't necessarily have an opinion.
This is one of the most touching of tributes! Well done! 👏

@@martinlegomovie In 1995, at the 1995 French convention in Lyon, Zienia Merton made this judicious remark: "We actors did not know that this series would be such a success when we were shooting it."
Watching the series on DVD or on the Web hurts me too much, when I started working at La Poste, I used the phiosophy and the tirades of the series to express myself, life is so well described in this space-opera!
@@martinlegomovie In any case, this philosophy brings me nothing. In the end, I missed a lot of things.
And Zienia, would she have wanted me? She was very discreet about her private life. By the way, what does her first name mean in Burmese?
Very, very cool. I loved that show, and UFO, as a kid, and had that huge spaceship toy. Long before Star Wars, we knew what was cool and sexy.
Love the eagle on the launch pad!

Fantastic expo, wow!
Also, the music of Barry Gray man, so delicious for the ears! This composer knew so much how to play with a theme. Another great master.
Un bellissimo ricordo!!!
Amazing - did you attend or organise these conventions? Where are these props now?
Just attended. The original props belong to various private collectors who usually display them at special events. The original studio Moonbase Alpha model is now on display at the National Film and Sci-Fi Museum in Milton Keynes, UK. Grazie, Giuseppe.
@@martinlegomovie grazie Giuseppe, any idea as to when is the next meeting /event in the Uk? I’m assuming you live here as well yes? Also didn’t I see a real size 1:1 scale Eagle displayed in one of these science fiction expos? dictionaries
@@enricomarconi1767 Yes, I have been living in the UK (Essex) since 1997 (I am from Palermo). I am in contact with the organisers of the Space 1999 convention (we worked together in the past on different projects). The idea was to organise a big event two years ago but it was cancelled due to covid. Now they would like to do one in London in 2024, which marks the 50th anniversary of the series. As far as I know, 1:1 Eagles do not exist, but I could be wrong. If you want to talk more, you can contact me privately. I am Giuseppe Turdo, author of the only Spazio 1999 book in Italian: Destinazione Obbligata: Alpha. giustur@aol.com A presto.
I'm understanding the relationship between age-old themes, Space Operas and Science Fiction.
Waa Very Sad It Was Only On Television A Short While..
It Was A Disappointment It Ended So Soon.
I Remember The Night It Premiered On Television.
I Sat And Watched The Whole Episode.

This looks like it was fun!

Indeed, I agree. Thank you for your comment.

A-Z PERFECTION OF SCI-FI TV SERIES
Was there......my rear is be seen , handbag on one shoulder in a Comdr Uniform talking to the guests!!!
I see. It was a very nice day.
Please list the names of the panelists in your description.
I recognize one person Nick Tate? Danggg is that Catherine Schell? I can't tell from the audio
R I P Mr. Martin Landau our Commander Koenig
RI P Mr. Barry Morse
R I P Mr.
A good show and video

@martinlegomovie ... Wonderful convention and beautiful video are there any others convention in project?
Thank you for your kind comments Alex. There have just been a similar convention in Parsippany, New Jersey (USA). I am not aware of any conventions in UK any time soon. Let's hope someone organise it.
martin ... Thank you for the reply. The US is too far away and we hope someone is organizing a convention, also because time goes by. If you know something about some conventions in Europe, please tell us.
@@martinlegomovie Lovely video Martin. Great photos with the stars. I only got to meet Barry Morse. All the best.:-)
@@soccer1970-f5f Thank you. Unfortunately, I never had the chance to meet Barry.
good video
High school level, mainly chemistry.
I answer you in French, because in English, Google finds my disrespectful remarks almost offensive, you can always retranslate. I really have a knack for making people uncomfortable: Zienia would have looked askance at me to the point of not speaking to me anymore.
No MK IX HAWK?
EDIT: Whoops! There it is. In the corner….😊
RIP martin landau

Wut?
La seconda serie faceva schifo.
Il personaggio di Maya il più ridicolo della storia della fantascienza
GREAT!!
This looks like it was fun!
