- A few months ago we spoke about how poorly African players have been treated by NRS & WB. We spoke about the lack of communication and negligence and since then, absolutely nothing has been done. It seems the situation has gotten worse. Ed Boon has been very active on Twitter due to Year 2 of MK1 being around the corner. Now would be the perfect time to shine a light on this again to hopefully get the African Mortal Kombat players some assistance on this issue.

As far as I am concerned, this is what the MK community gets for defending that awful Tanya and Sheeva redesign... And the Jax ending in MK11... and basically everything else they called regular innocent people "racist" over just because people didn't agree with NRS's direction.

I'm a South African player and we can connect with ME and EU but never North or West African players. Africa does not have a pro komp, we are never acknowledged. FGC Africa is entirely community-run and we can't even hold our own events. We feel neglected and it's heavily disappointing that the issues still haven't been addressed. The problem with American games and America in general is they think Africa is like a single country, so it wouldn't be a big deal to neglect it. And it's the case with a lot of American made games, like Fortnite for example, 6yrs since it existed and African players begged for a single server, reaching out to big streamers to raise awareness, to no avail

The FGC community, especially the MK, are more concerned about being gay in Saudi Arabia than actually helping with real issues around their own games.
People running the risk of death because EVO wants to host a tournament in a hateful country is more important than MK's bad online in certain regions. People's lives are more important than people's Internet connections.

Harada revived the franchise even tho Bandai Namco were pushing him to not make another gane cuz the feanchise isnt selling. With less budget than Ttt2 and opposing bandai he made an amazing game T7 and give support to community.

Whenever I go to Nigeria(Igbo kwenu) I would just stick to offline games. Devs and publishers act like Africa is on another planet. Might as well ask for servers on Mars.

I'm an African FGC member and I've said from day one that MK1 has "racist netcode". Why route the netcode through central servers when peer-to-peer worked perfectly fine in previous games? Talk about a smooth-brain decision. I'm South African so fortunately the problem doesn't exist for me coz they eventually gave us a server down here. But the rest of Africa still struggles and it is definitely SHAMBOLIC because MK seems to be the biggest FG in Africa. I'm a SF player and I've noticed the MK guys always get the most viewers on their online tournament streams.
As a South African I've been a massive MK fan ever since my mom bought me MK4 on PC as a kid. Ever since then I've had Deadly Alliance, Deception, Shaolin Monks & Armageddon on PS2, which I still have to this day. Currently I only play MKX and MK11. I'm reluctant to get MK1. I hope they see this video and do something. Thanks for looking out🙏

Then after an update we found games, but now 200-300 ping with ppl in your own country city. How inclusive…

I honestly believe it's too little too late for NRS to fix anything in regards to the game. They had plenty of time to fix all these while the game was out but decided not to and just keep pushing out cosmetics. I'm honestly not hopeful for any future content that they put out at this point.

im in zimbabwe, africa and i can vouch for this guy i can count on one hand how many online matches i have had in mk1 it searches for matches for so long that my controller will keep timing out and turning off, mk11 servers are a bit better but still just as bad andi preordered the game and have kombat pack 1 but i dont even bother anymore cos you never can find a match

As someone who spent 10 years playing SF and Tekken in Africa....
Africa may be a huge market but it isn't as straightforward as it seems. The size of the landmass coupled with the large number of borders means infrastructure across the continent is nonexistent. You will not find a pakistan-style hidden trove of skill because each scene is tiny and isolated- its almost impossible to travel across the length of a single country without trouble let alone the continent. Internet infrastructure is a nightmare as a few undersea cables serve the entire continent, and the best connections are confined to the coasts. In the locations where the best scenes exist south of the sahara (Abidjan, Lagos, South Africa, Accra) the players cannot reach their full potential because internet infrastructure in those countries is not designed to keep traffic local....so even if NRS set up servers in each country, pings would remain high as traffic would still leave to europe and return in order to connect locally. The situation would improve marginally, but they would still be playing with high delay/rollback and would not be competitive globally.
Next of course there is the fact that NRS very likely doesnt even sell their games in major African scenes at all. Global finance is utter shit and as a result, buying games online is insanely difficult and the cost of physical games is astronomical. As a result a shocking percentage of game sales there are either resold keys, illegal downloads or otherwise pirated content. As a result NRS doesn't even profit and isn't incentivised to care.
How do I know this? I battled through the horrific ordeal of being a fighting game player in Africa for a full decade. It is absolute hellfire, and worse than you can even begin to imagine.
In short, while it is a horrible situation, I sincerely think African nations outside of perhaps south Africa are not yet ready for any gaming company to invest heavily in them- and if investment did come, it would be for naught and cause more problems than it solves (you dont want a company to invest in you and make a loss....that just makes it less likely youll get the investment later when it matters)
And if you think youll find the next arslan ash in Lagos or Cape town.... trust me, it doesn't get better than JabhiM, and that's south Africa.... lack of electricity, internet, and tiny isolated scenes= death to any potential "hidden gem" of skill.

Im from Zimbabwe and i have had this game from day 1, and i have played less than 40 games inline becoz the ping is always rising and people eventually rage quit...imagine your opponent rage quitting coz lag...
The worst part about all of this is that we were able to play mkx and mk11 perfectly. Mk1 was just a major downgrade from the start. we still play because we love the franchise but the future is not looking good . We might as well skip day one purchases and wait for the ultimate edition of the game at the end of the games cycle

We had a mortal Kombat game cabinet in every local corner store in the 90s.i had a choice of 5 shops within a 5 minute walk from my house that had the game. It was one of the first fighting games we saw. Then came the street fighter games. Tekken and soul calibre were mostly in big arcades.

There has to be negligence of some sort with server support over there in Africa for the game. Or just straight up refusal to put server support in some African countries for some reason. I could be mistaken, its just an interesting question. Even if players have to use Southern European servers to play, that's still, as you put it, Shambolic man....

MK1 IS FREE TO PLAY BECAUSE OF A GLITCH IN THE CURRENT BUILD 😂😂 I haven't had a online subscription on my console since release and MK1 is the only game that lets me play online with no Xbox Live subscription. The game is a glitchfest, I was going to keep this to myself but screw WB.

It's not just Africa...there's Pakistan,India,Bangladesh(the whole south East Asia belt if ur looking in detail)...even New Zealand has issues(which is obvious considering were they r located on the map...well atleast they have the Australians to match-up with). Whats confusing is the failure to setup proper servers for the south East Asian countries...especially Pakistan & India cos they're huge markets to tap into. The most important thing is that this issue is not just there with MK it's also present for other fighting games...the current servers for Asia on majority of the fcg games cater to Japan,Korea & barely China & ignore the other Asian nations. It's a sad reality that has become evidently acceptable.
another thing i forgot to point out is that most africans earn a lot less than the rest of the world there are people who earn as little as 200 dollars a month so buying a game officially and not pirating it is not easy for most gamers so for us its a really big deal when you pay so much for a product and cant use it the way you should be able to

Okay to be fair, if you check the world AWS network, there is only one data center in the whole of africa, and it's not even in Johannesburg. So in terms of internet connection, they're mostly up sihtt creek without a paddle.

That’s crazy how NRS ignores the Africa player base. There are still people supporting this game that’s not even good over there at some point go somewhere else it’s been almost a year and they don’t even acknowledge them. Play another game as a consumer it’s obvious they don’t want your money. It sucks but it’s clear they don’t care about them over there. Is MK the only fighting game over there?

I understand why though, the internet providers in some African countries are also partly to blame. our internet providers are not consistent and the speeds are not the best. Most companies are not interested in investing in africa coz we are a poor continent compared to europe and alot of business malpractice makes it hard environment to operate in some of these things are down to infrastructure issues that are limited by government behaviours. But if servers in South Africa and Ghana are not solid then its clearly NRS.

I'm definitely not a fan of NRS, but in this case, they're off the hook.
Africa has a serious problem with internet connection. The number of users is increasing, but their infrastructure is still mostly undersea cables, wich is pretty unreliable.
Just check the speedtest global index... the first African country to appear is South Africa at 50th place, with 47.28Mbps/dwl + 38.99Mbps/upl. Ghana is 114th place, with 37.89Mbps/dwl + 28.32Mbps/upl. Also, this is a P2P game , there's literally nothing NRS can do, unless they decide to rebuild their entire infrastructure. And it doesn't matter if they're in the same town, they can even be in the same room and the result would still be the same, 'cause both players would still have to rely on their ISP to make them connect. In fact, they'll most likely have better experience playing with someone from the Middle-East or Southern Europe than with other African neighbours, 'cause at least there'll be just one African ISP. In the case of Ghana, they have a latency of 7ms, and that is very high for their low numbers of dwl/upl. Now, let's look at the UK, for example: 13ms of latency... sounds high but, their dwl/upl is 106.51/28.37, so you can still get a good connection.
NRS can maybe (a very wishful maybe) tweek their netcode a bit, but even a rollback netcode has its limitations, it's not a damn miracle formula.
And for those wondering, it so happens that network management is a family business. At 19 I was building servers with my old man, and he did spent some time working in Angola in recent years... and yeah, he testified the lack of internet quality. Also, here we have a large community of people from Angola, Mozambique, Cape Verde, Guinea-Bissau and São Tomé and Príncipe, and all of the people I've met complain about that, it's not just a gaming thing.
Now, on the other hand, in some African countries, the mobile bandwidth is actually better than their fixed broadband, so maybe that could work. Vodafone is expanding in Africa, so maybe check them out for an alternative solution.
On a final note, I mean no disrespect to anyone in Africa with these issues, it's an infrastructural problem, not theirs, but also not a game developer's. As a fighting game player myself, in my case Tekken, I wish only for an icreased number of competition. Hopefully things might get better in the future.
I hear what you're saying but how do you explain the better connectivity on MK11 which had a higher population across PS, Xbox and PC versus what they're getting now with a lower player population?
@@RealMikeHollowOut of the blue? Their increased number of internet users is a contributing fact. But the heaviest factor is probably that there are more players in Africa playing MK1 than have ever been playing MK11. MK1 is still growing in sales faster than MK11... in spite all their problems, it's still a brand that sells pretty well. And even the game being a P2P, there's still probably a connection that needs to be made to a NRS server... not for actual hosting gameplay, but just for a run check of players' information like ID, game version, even cheats, hacks and disconnects... I'm guessing this one but it's probably true... also why I believe MK has a system of controlling disconnections and cheating better than Tekken. In summary: the more players, the worse the quality.
This still doesn't explain how MK11 is still running fine over there amongst other fighting games like Street Fighter 6. I've checked with a lot of them. They all say the same thing. It's just MK1. If what you are saying is true, surely it should affect them as well? Especially MK11 in the present day?
@@RealMikeHollow Only logical explanation is that MK1 far surpasses MK11 or SF6 in terms of playerbase in Africa. Think of it this way: if each player is represented by a car, then the road is the ISP, and the destination is the game server (MK11 and MK1 do not share the same server). The more cars trying to get to the same destination, the denser the traffic congestion gets, so that road should have more lanes. Like I said, you still need to get to a server (players' ID, matchmaking, etc...), and I'm guessing MK's server stays connected to the players throughout the gameplay. I truly wanted NRS to be the sole culprit in this scenario, but that doesn't seem to be the case. Honestly, I belive that trying to reach out to Musk to aggressively expand Starlink into Africa is a more viable solution than knocking on NRS/WB's door... Starlink is already in 6 or 7 African countries I believe, so, who knows...
Warner Bros. AND NRS need to actually put their money where their mouths are and get this shit show back on track and knock off the DEI sham nonsense and focus on the fucking quality of the damn games. Would it really tax your income that hard to have proper servers for regions that support you product?
where are their servers? if they are playing on ps5 they are probably using sonys servers and my guess is the closest servers are in EU.
I can't remember where they said they were, but I just remember it's nowhere near Africa.

Yeah, but that's for people to discuss that are more educated on that matter and that ain't me. They can fix issues with their countries infrastructure and companies can also assist young players in this manner. We've got problems over here in the UK but if a developer told me to worry about my countries issues with Brexit or trade rather than a game, I'd genuinely be flabbergasted 😂
