After defeating the Philistines, Samuel raises his Ebenezer, declaring that on this spot God defeated the enemy. Thus, the words, “hither by thy help I come.”

My lovely sweet late husband taught me this song to play on the organ at the church because he didn't feel well enough to play himself. I didnt know the song so he took me through it lovingly and patiently many times until I had learned it by heart. Such precious memories and a precious hymn for a precious Lord.

Every day after i pray the Chaplet of Divine Mercy at 3:00 PM, i listen to this beautiful church hymn and it helps me feel good and blessed with God the father and Jesus. This was my grandmothers favorite hymn. She sung it almost everyday, whether it were when she was by herself, or even with company around. My family and I sang this song at her and my grandfathers funeral. Whenever I hear someone sing this song, I always think of her. I loved her so much because of how much support she gave me with the dreams I want to pursue. My pastor Skip Heitzig told a beautiful story about this song. The writer Robert Robertson, had backslid. He was on a train one day next to a young woman who was reading a new hymnal. She excitedly read the words of this song to him not knowing who he was. He replied that he is the writer and that the words have come back to convict him and prick his heart because he was far from God.

One day he was riding in a stage coach and sitting by a woman who was reading a hymnbook. She showed him the hymn, “Come, Thou Fount of every blessing,“ saying how wonderful it was. Robinson tried to change the subject but couldn’t. Finally he said, “Madam, I am the poor man who wrote that hymn many years ago, and I would give a thousand worlds to enjoy the feelings I had then.“

My daughter in-law selected this as the main hymn for her wedding to my son Matt. She had just accepted Christ and her testimony was confirmed from her wisdom in choosing this hymn. It was beautifully played at the church. Thank God.

This was my grandmothers favorite hymn. She sung it almost everyday, whether it were when she was by herself, or even with company around. My family and I sang this song at her and my grandfathers funeral. Whenever I hear someone sing this song, I always think of her. I loved her so much because of how much support she gave me with the dreams I want to pursue. I just wish she, my grandfather, and my dad were hear to see me when the day comes that I to accomplish those dreams.

My pastor Skip Heitzig told a beautiful story about this song. The writer Robert Robertson, had backslid. He was on a train one day next to a young woman who was reading a new hymnal. She excitedly read the words of this song to him not knowing who he was. He replied that he is the writer and that the words have come back to convict him and prick his heart because he was far from God.

Aardvark, may you rest in peace. Robert Robinson who wrote this hymn did stray from the faith. He drifted far from the front of every blessing. One day he was riding in a stage coach and sitting by a woman who was reading a hymnbook. She showed him the hymn, “Come, Thou Fount of every blessing,“ saying how wonderful it was. Robinson tried to change the subject but couldn’t. Finally he said, “Madam, I am the poor man who wrote that hymn many years ago, and I would give a thousand worlds to enjoy the feelings I had then.“
This is the first hymn my mother taught me in our language. She is dead now; but I shed tears when I listen to it especially the last part of sealing my heart for the courts above.
