I love how they bring out the thought line about identity. "I don't care what the original parts were, it's the same thing because I said so and because it's functionally the same."
Very similar to Japanese ideology of their ancient buildings even when said buildings had been destroyed and rebuild multiple times they are still considered to be the continuation of the original. On that note they should bring in some Samurai philosophy to this school.
That's not what he said. The point isn't that it's functionally the same, it's that he's using it as what he said. In the case of the ship made from the original boat parts and the one with all the replacement bits, the fact that the one with all the original bits wouldn't be theseus' ship because he's using the other one and calling that his ship. One ship could be some other git's ship or a display in a museum. Even if the museum ship were called theseus' ship and the owner adamantly insisted that it was, it still wouldn't be because theseus would be out there sailing on his actual ship no matter what any other git calls the one made of the original planks. It's honestly the best take I've heard on the question in a while and by extension, theseus' ship no longer is his ship as soon as he gets crumped, which when you put it like that, makes absolute sense. Humie smart boys have been over thinking things into stupid directions for a long time.
So if a man gets a transgender surgery and identifies a woman, then hes still a man because 99.3% of the planet and me still think of and treat him as a man. Good good.
This is a great argument. It is better than many I heard in my philosophy classes. A thoroughly pragmatical identity is appropriate for practical items. And good in adding the distinction that it doesn't apply to "things" with awareness.
The planks and bits on Theseus' ship are replaced when the old one gets rotten or damaged. If you built a new ship out of all the parts that got replaced, it wouldn't be fit for service- it wouldn't be the ship of Theseus, it would be a wreck.
This was a really well done smartboi think time. Lots of parallels with older machines we have today that have had parts replaced to keep them functional. For an upcoming video down the line, I’d suggest Orks discuss Olga of Kiev
This is a good take I think, it kinda dodges the thought experiment but it makes sense Not sure it really addresses the second ship in particular, it’s more of a methodology then a straight answer
Well, if the second boat would be Thesus Ship, what stops every wooden boat from being a tree, because it used to be. Classifying things as what they used to be isn't as useful as by what they are now
@@Captaintrippz my point is that while this is a good methodology like you say, it doesn’t answer the question, it’s more like “here is how to answer it” but that doesn’t tell us which one is Theseus’ ship, because it fails to tell us which one we consider to be Theseus’ ship
@@Valiguss In my book, the ship Theseus is using is Theseus ship. The name doesn't describe the planks, mast, rigging, keel or sails but the form and function that they provide when put together. Not necessarily the most thpught provoking answer but it's sure as shit my preferred one 😆
Considering all ork related things are as they are because they thinl they are as such it seems pretty sensible to say that this line of reasoning would be pretty intuitive to them
I’ve got an idea for the part of the replaced part ship and the original part ship there both technically the same ship in there own ways the we can say it’s two versions of the exact same ship almost like a copy of the original made of different materials

Every cell of your body is replaced molecule by molecule through normal cellular repair. So even though your brain cells don't get replaced, each part of those cells will be replaced in about a year. So does he still have the same brain?
Your stories are very entertaining and stimulating. If we were trapped in a bomb shelter for months or years with other occupants it wouldn't be so bad.
I dunno about dat argument. If an ork takes a humie ship and make it inta a ork ship, but a humie general wants his ship back, he won’t be happy if you just take any ork ship at all, including one that wasn’t taken from him, he would want da same one dat was taken from him. Soz additional use and understanding of a thing does not override its previous use and understanding.da humie captain still sees the ship as his ship also when Orks see it as theirs.
"So don't make up a million new words for things that are constantly changing" Dude, wow. Harsh critic at a very current political movement. I hope this won't create a shitstorm.
I never liked this thought experiment. If you replace a piece of the ship with a new piece the new piece is now part of the whole and is now part of that ship. It's been replaced. The value put upon the old piece was revoked and reallocated. The former piece is now part of the "old ship" and the new piece is part of the ship. You can replace them all and you still have the ship but now you have "the old ship." The only way it wouldn't be a new ship is if you bought a newer identical ship and called it by the same name. Replacing and removing is an exchange the value put upon the parts. All that shit about "are we the same" well yeah no shit we are the same. EVERYTHING changes. Identity isn't a physical problem because there's no such thing as unchanging. Identity is a problem of thought and perspective upon the implication there can be a state of permanent unchanging or whatever.

The beauty of aligning identity with utitlity and function and then providing a demonstrative argument for why that is quite frankly astounding.
