  • A first ride and review of the Yamaha Tricity 300 scooter. Motorcycling without a license? Now that sounds dangerous and irresponsible, however for the Yamaha Tricity 3 wheeled scooter come trike, you do not need a motorcycle license to ride it.
    Because it has 3 wheels you can ride it holding only a car license (in the UK). Practical for commuting in the city or even out of the city, saving space on our roads and no longer needing to worry about traffic jams. The Tricity 300 is aimed at getting car drivers into the motorcycling world, but without the hassle of getting your motorcycle license.
    Get the benefits of a motorcycle and scooter but without the hassle of getting a license! But is it any good to ride?

    As a lifetime biker I think that it's a brilliant concept and would seriously consider one. Diagnosed with MS a few years back and have had to give up bigger bikes and cut riding right back because of the weakness in my legs. Was considering building a trike moving forward but this definitely needs further investigation. . Great video. . Cheers 👍

      I was just talking to a bloke yesterday, 6'5, no health issues, and he got rid of his as he found it just too heavy and cumbersome to manoeuvre. Don't want to rain on anyone's parade, but as someone with health issues myself, I thought I would just pass on this chaps experience.... something to bear in mind in the least. There are still lighter options I believe.

      I am looking also for a bike that is really stable as I have also muscular dystrophy and has made it really hard to find a bike that I don’t need to use mush my legs to keep stable the bike specially when is stopped . And this one it looks right but as you said needs more investigation first before I call it perfect …!

    Fantastic video and information 👏 I had a bike licence from 1980 to 1999. Then the kids came along. So I gave up using a bike. Tired to get my licence back a few years ago, and they said No, that I would have to do my test all over again, which would cost 1,500 euros. So, even looking at the bike in your video, it's still amazing that you can use a car licence and still get the feeling of the wind in your face. Eamon in Ireland 🇮🇪 🙌

The added bonus is that it looks like a bit of fun for the occasional ride out on a weekend as well; winner winner in my opinion. Nice vid, Gus!
    I rode the first two-up-front scooters, the MP3s, when they were a new thing. A 250, a 400 and then a 500 (Fuoco).
    Extremely practical and versatile, but fun too. I commuted every day and toured Europe with them as well. I leaned more on them then I ever have on 'proper' motorcycles, because they were so stable (then again, I'm not a 'sports' biker).
    They are great. You make me laugh comparing it to a car, Angus, hehe. It's a maxi scooter in all ways - the two wheels up front is almost just a 'feature'.
    It is great for new riders, but it's bonkers you can ride it on a car licence. It rides nothing like a car drives or even a trike rides. It leans like a scooter. It rides like a scooter.
    The linkages up front make it lumber a tad until you are moving, but the pay-off in grip and stability is fantastic. The 'tripod effect' feels solid even if you slide it sideways, while leaning! (Not that I'd advise that, still hehe).
    FYI: The 'stand-assist' isn't something you'd want to use for anything but parking. Not even at the lights. Turning your scooter into a narrow trike (especially when the switching takes a couple of seconds) is asking to fall over, ironically. I tried it once - rolled into a pothole, and because the suspension was no longer working independently it nearly tipped over.
    For parking though? Awesome. Laugh as you pull up into a slippery sloping grass field, stop wherever you fancy, press lock, put on the handbrake, get off and start setting up your tent, while the rest of the scooter club slide around and struggle to find somewhere they can safely put down a kick-stand! Giggle as you pull up to a stacked London bike park, lock it upright, get off and then push it into a tiny gap from behind!

    • @redangrevival
      @redangrevival  2 роки тому +5

      Haha cheers 👍Thats cool you have a lot of experience with them! It is a bit crazy that you can ride it with a car license, very strange indeed!!
      Blimey I would be nervous sliding it around a corner, I was nervous just leaning it!! Suppose you get used to it quite quickly though.
      Sounds like you had a lot of fun on them and really liked it 👌 That is great to hear, I love the fact that everyone has different experiences with different machines. The beauty of motorcycling, it is sooo much fun. Cheers

    Depends on distance between the two front wheels. Used to be able to get spacers for the piaggio to make the wheels wide enough to stop it being a motorcycle. Most modern car licences do not cover trikes.

    Hired a Piaggio mp3 in Corfu a few years ago. Loved it in the winding mountain roads. I've only ridden motorbikes on a few occasions (off road in my younger years). Bit of a learning curve for me and I did manage to tip it over turning a sharp right junction with my son on the back, very embarrassing at the time but that feeling has worn off now! Tons of fun though. Nearly mastered it after 5 days hire and didn't lose the damage deposit. Conclusion super duper. Street Hawk next!

    I’ve always ridden larger bikes. 900-1200cc, because I like the ability to pack the panniers and cover longer distances comfortably.
    These bikes look like they hit the perfect compromise, as the smaller motor will be economical, yet powerful enough to sit comfortably at the speed limit. I don’t think the extra width at the front would be wider than an average sports tourer with hard side panniers at the rear, and I’ve never had any issues filtering through slow traffic on my 1200cc BMW touring bike.
    I’d fit a top box and side luggage immediately to this, to release its full potential as a year round workhorse.
    The 3 wheel configuration will give newbies a lot more confidence in the wet and colder weather, and the luggage will make it a viable alternative to a small car for most people who live in ULEZ areas, or want better mpg or struggle to find parking at work or home.
    I like the idea of more people trying something different like this anyway. They free up more space on the road, and any rider will tell you that getting out on your bike everyday just makes you happier, as they’re MUCH MORE FUN!😂😎

    Great review and I’ve now gone out and bought one for pottering around and also adventures in the Highlands and Borders of Scotland 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿. If you can get close to 80 mpg that would be fantastic, as my Jeep Wrangler Rubicon only does around 23 mpg, although it is great fun off-road. Only real concern is the weight of it for slow manoeuvres, although the Yamaha dealer says it’s often best to hop off it, activate the stand assist and then push it around manually, rather than “duck walk” it backwards etc.. I think you’d need to be quite hardy to ride in the winter up here though, even if the wide trike does give a measure of weather protection.

    After 1.5 years on this Trike Using it all year but not tested in snow I can say I am impressed. Sod town riding get straight on the motorway like I do 5 days a week 44 miles round trip from Chesterfield to Ilkeston in any lane. Who the hell stops a bike with just the front brake, this has ABS, Traction control and 85mpg. I get off it stick all my riding gear under the seat walk round town in my underwire if needed. A guy and his son on UA-cam has done 250 miles a day for 5 days on a Tricity 300 and an R3. Work this one out then. A PLC programmer put his laptop under the seat, traveled Chesterfield to Cardiff round trip and claimed £0.45 a mile and gets paid for the job that’s 345 x 0.45 = £156.60. 345/85=4 gallons = £24. 2 guys on 1 tricity 300 did over 80 miles per hour on UA-cam. My daily commuter is a w650 cafe racer that has zero practicality to modern day life. It is a hybrid of a scooter and a motorbike. It has its advantages. In some ways the best of both worlds for some.
    In Australia, My new Tricity has the foot brake removed I find the front brake very powerful. Is this the reason the front brake is powerful?
    There is a panel where it is supposed to be.
    The panel looks very much part of the original manufacture by Yamaha. Perhaps it is Australian law, no foot brake.
    I will find out when I take Tricy for her first service. I have been riding bikes since the 1950s and had many make of bike in that time.
    This Hybrid corners like it's running on rails, very surprising. It takes a bit of getting used to but once you do it is a very enjoyable comfortable Sunday morning ride in the countryside out to your favourite motorbike cafe. On a cold morning, most of your body is out of the cold air stream.
    The one thing I miss is the tank between my knees. I always feel something is missing and affects the way I ride.
    With a motorbike, your body becomes part of the machine a scooter Hybrid, you just sit in it like a car. That's different but you have many positions for your feet and changing positions is nice on that long ride.

      @redangrevival  2 роки тому

      Absolutely, has its advantages and disadvantages 👍 Very practical and easy to ride, and like you say the wind protection is brilliant. I didn't know you get chilly mornings in Aus!! 😉
      Not too sure why you have no foot brake, must be a local law! On the one I rode the left hand brake is very strong as it applies all 3 brakes at the same time. It is an interesting bike/trike and definitely has its advantages. I would need longer on it to get used to the cornering with 3 wheels. Cheers

      @@redangrevival In Western Australia, we have the extremes from as hot as over 40degrees a few days in summer and sometimes below 12 degrees in winter to compensate we do have the advantage of over 240 sunshine days a year with most of our rain in winter. With slightly more inches of rain per year than London. I originate from Kent 42 years ago. Did most of my riding around London and the southeast on an AJS CSR 650 wish I still owned it? At one time I had a Triumph Thunderbird with a sprung hub believe me that was an animal to ride.
      Riding here in Wa is an absolute pleasure once you get out of the city the traffic flow is low. In the past, I had a desire to ride right around Australia visiting towns and interesting places on the way. When I last checked that was over 42,000km more than the distance around the earth at the equator. If you plan it correctly and take a year to do it you can ride all the way round in summer weather.
      I have reached the age now where my partner said no more two wheels so I bought the Tricity. "She said I meant Motorbikes".
      Really!!!!!

      👍 haha good for you, we need our motorcycle fix somehow!! Nice, that is a great plan to have, I would absolutely love to do something like that around Australia!! Heaven 🙌 Thanks for the info, really interesting. I have now added that trip to my bucket list (motorcycle around Australia).
      Keep riding my friend and enjoy the nice weather you have out there. All the best from the UK 👍

      I believe here in the UK if you remove the foot brake you would be breaking the law in regards to its classification as a trike. It would certainly fail a MOT test without this foot brake. Shame, because it’s position is too far back to be used comfortably with the ball of the foot and who would brake with their heal? Frankly, it’s pretty useless, just getting in the way.

    I own a piaggio 300 and it's an absolute pleasure to ride, however it's clumsy in traffic, and front end heavy which requires sturdy manual handling, that said they're stable comfortable with good all round performance.

    • @redangrevival
      @redangrevival  Рік тому +1

      Yes I did get that from the Tricity, they are stable and very practical etc.. But actually in city/busy traffic they are not the best. The extra width and weight up front make it much less nimble than an ordinary scooter.
      Great things though and I can see why they are so popular!

    Hi. Thanks for the great amd informative review. I am a car driver and have recently done my CBT as I've been thinking of getting a scooter primarily for my commute in London. Occasionally (say once or twice a month) I have to go further afield around the m25 to Essex which I obviously wouldn't be able to do on a CBT/125cc. I also plan to commute throughout the winter so I had been considering one of these Tricity 300's. Do you think that is a good solution for me or shall I just suck it up and get a scooter for normal commute and use the car for longer, occasional commute? Thanks!

    This bike seems ideal for me. I might need to look into it a bit more. After motorbike accident that left me in a wheelchair for four years and with subsequent lifetime disabilities along with the fact that I am less than 5 foot so kind of struggle putting my legs down to hold a bike before the accident. This seems like an ideal way to get back out there.

    Excellent trike. Rides well, pulls well (for something that weighs 239kilos) . Comfy for long rides. But beware... Learn to use the stand assist . Best to only use for parking but if you arm it whilst stopped in traffic... Always put your feet down to pull away. It can lurch left or right if not on evenish road when stand assist releases. Great trike. Had mine a year. Additional. Its a trike so can be ridden legally without helmets. Best to wear lids though. If not for safety, the cops will keep pulling you over not realising its legal.

      Good idea to do a CBT before hand 👌

    I tried a Piaggio Mp3 125 in France it was great. Then I tried a Gilera Mp3 500 inb the UK. Even better.
    Like everything else u ride an drive. Take the time to get used to it, an finally, don't compare these type of machines to other ones. They can't be compared.
    I had an Burgy 400, then I got a Piaggio X9 500. No comparrison to the 2.
    I also rode a Burgy 650, again, altho it was like a rocket, no comparison to the other 2, apart from feeling like "Easy Rider" from the film, with both Burgys, as the seating position is low an laid back.

    I have no experience on these things, but as a biker I wonder about the limits of movement of the tilting parallelogram arrangement. Isn't there a danger that you might enter a fast curve that needs more bank than the mechanism allows?

Without correct training in the principal's of "Trail Braking " Target Fixation " or Accident avoidance. I suggest any person who wishes to buy one Get Trained by a professional. Or have a look at the accident results from the Scooter Hire industry here in Australia or Bali & Spain where all you need is a Car licence 😮 I'm not trying to put you off but any accident will affect You and your Family !!!! 😢 . By the way I am a Professional Trainer and Transport assessor who's a cranky old Gitt and has had a Full Motorcycle Licence for 50 years , Stay Safe .

    Can get a car with 4-6y on if or this😮. To bad i just bought a new car . But 0.3-0.4 is probably best efficiency for price, insurance cant be to bad as its under 100k. "Added to wishlist"

    See a lot of people talking about the wheels and reverse the new mp3 They just added reverse and those new trikes were made to put bigger wheels on them aftermarket some of them have car tires on them that's what they design them for made to grip the road better some people want to do a wheelie on some of them and can't depends on the model and the year they said some of them are designed for on and off road the bad thing about them is the four-stroke motor the one that has a better motor Austrian motor made in Canada is the can am Spyder has the three cylinder motor I made two stroke and three 3 and three cylinder person when it comes to bikes scooter moped and motorcycles then they make the crappy ice bear trikes some of them are lacking the modern smart cages speedometers but the MP3 has the Bluetooth technology there's a lot more they can do with something like that for the price they're asking price some companies used to offer performance exhaust for the extra cost I don't know if they still do that, & you're going to be seeing more trikes because of regulations and rules and things always change they even make clothed cabin ones I see a lot of different companies and making I see a lot of them stock not too many modified ones or custom ones there's a lot of homemade ones and about the reverse I noticed in some cities reverses of law on some of the tricks or four wheelers ATVs I like things that are different I wish they came back with new 2 strokes but it's cool now they're using 3 cycle & 3 stroke engines now and motorcycles I haven't seen them put them yet in scooters or mopeds I heard soon they want to make four strokes up so late the changing them for five strokes that's what I heard I know in India they have a hybrid motor that's electric and gas they're putting in motorcycle scooters mopeds the technology should be way more far advanced than the trike the reason it's not because of the lunch and date because of covid-19 they have to put a standstill on it Suzuki went back to their days when they made gt750 water buffalo that'll be cool if they made a newer version trike water buffalo Long as they don't put a crappy for cylinder in it that's what killed the Yamaha Zuma when they switched the motor to four stroke a lot of people compare that to the Chinese scooter by switching the four-stroke or if Tomos ever came back and made a trike would be awesome & they also comparing some of the trikes to the Polaris slingshot and some of those bikes and mopeds only come with certain CC's because for some areas some of the higher cc's are too fast depending where you live if can am made a 125- 250 - 300- 400 Spyder trike within three cylinder 3 stroke engine & i be interested in something like that I don't know any other companies that don't use four strokes I know some of the dirt bike companies still use two strokes and some models like micro cars some of them where hit and UK and Europe and some of them failed in US but some of them are making a comeback to collectors, some bikes that make a kit to turn them into trikes but I heard it's not the same because some of them are not designed for it so you have to make it designed for it but there's a lot you can do with the technology now that there's 3D printers plasma cutters water jet cutters basically can design everything yourself problem is you would have to go through regulations make it street rideable

    Two questions: 1. do you feel comfortable splitting the lanes with cars and how tight can you do a u-turn? The Kymco CV3 with the 550 engine seams a better buy but Yamaha certainly has a longer history. Thanks mate.

      @redangrevival  8 місяців тому

      It is not as easy as a standard two wheeled motorcycle, but much better than a car! Yes U-turns are easy to make, great balance.
      If you want the engine I recommend the biggest Yamaha one. Quite expensive though
