The gremlins are though. Paganism. Prayer one minute and then then throw the belief out the window.

I think he was saying that the prayer before or during the ride every time is the superstition. Not the prayer itself. He said he does his every time about a mile down the road. The specific time, not the thing is the superstition.

    • @austinjudkins8346
      @austinjudkins8346 8 днів тому

@dwaynestomp5462 I'm not trying to say it is. But if it's something you do before a ride every time or you feel like something might happen then it might be.if you pray every time before a ride but don't feel off if you miss a time then it's not really a superstition. If you do feel offbecause you missed the prayer, Its' not a prayer to honor God at that point. It's a prayer to satisfy a superstition itch. It is not automatically a superstition but it can be in certain situations.

I rode for over 30 years alone and with other non-Harley riders, with no gremlin bell. I hadn't ever even heard of a gremlin bell until in 2009 I started riding with a group of Harley guys and got pretty deep into the Harley culture for several years. One of the guys bought me a bell and installed it. At some point it fell off... likely years ago. Guess what? No gremlins in the 30+ years before I had a bell, nor any gremlins when the bell was on the bike, nor any gremlins since it fell off.
I'm starting to think the whole gremlin bell thing was just all made up to sell a bunch of bells...

Lmao. The tradition came from the old WWII vets. Many began part superstition part humorous explanations for failures of equipment during critical moments, creating catastrophe for soldiers to make it home from their tour. It held that these “gremlins” were destructive agents of horrible mischief. Apparently driven mad by bells…this carried home with them and they began hanging bells on their bikes to keep the gremlins out of the works.🤓🙏🤘🏽🤣Great tradition and history. Rubber Down, friend!🤘🏽🙏🤓

I keep mine on my keychain so it's always with me.

In the 1980s Harley used a metallic dark green paint, it was discontinued because the plastic parts never matched the metal parts the mismatch was caused by the electrostatic paint system used on the fuel tank and fenders that caused the metal flakes to stand instead of laying flat as on the plastic parts.

Oh, far as I know the green bike being bad luck is. During the first few wars with motorcycle, scout bikes were green, and the enemy would shoot at them to stop them from reporting their position. So, it was bad luck if you rode any green bike back then. and it stuck to this day.

I have gremlin bells on all my bikes and they’ve all been given to me. I enjoy them for the gimmicky nature of them but if I didn’t have one on a bike my reaction would be “meh”.
When my wife and I go for a ride, we say short prayers. As soon as we leave the driveway, she says “God bless our trip” followed by me saying “Lord, please let this be a good day”. I like it because it’s a just a little reminder to me that it’s not just me on the bike and I have to ride accordingly.

I don't do anything, I don't even let the bike warm up. I just turn it on and go. I check the tires once a month, and I wash it whenever it's absolutely necessary. I wear a helmet for wind comfort, and gloves because my knuckles get super dark. I ride a 2022 Road King Special, and I love it.

The Tire Shine story reminded me of a story my now late ex-father-in-law told me one time. Now Bill raced hillclimb motorcycles and he ran a Triumph Bonneville 650 with a big-bore kit in it making it a 750. It was a beast! My now ex-wife, when she was a younger child was cleaning it a one race and she put Armorall on the seat to make it look "pretty". bill didn't realize this until, at the line, revved the motor and dumped the clutch. He watched his bike shoot up the hill while sitting on his ass on the ground. The bike left without him. Prior to his second run he was seen rubbing dirt onto the seat. On that run he took top-time of the day.

Actually, I forgot about something i always tuck my shoe strings in. Back in the 90s, I had my shoe string wrap around my shift peg pulled up to a light. I couldn't put my foot down and just about dropped my bike. I was lucky it was light, and I barely saved it. I bet the car next to me was thinking wtf if that's how you ride, you might want to consider not riding."

I don't believe in the bells, but there is one, somewhere, on my bike. One of the coworkers at the shop was like, "You don't have one?" Then bought one and told me he put it on somewhere I wouldn't find it. Cause he knew I'd take it off. And if it means that much to him, I'll just not go looking for it.

  • @Tumbleweed1961

On the matter of the bell. Gremlins are a fable. The bell is for the spirits brothers or sisters lost on the road. The brutal violence of their ending can cast their spirit far enough from the road that they wander lost, unable to find their way home. The clear, crisp ringing of the bell helps to guide them in their journey.
Passenger pegs, and this is one I feel everyone should be aware of. "Pegs Down" is meant to signify the loss of a fellow rider. Regardless the circumstances of their death. You can liken it to our version of the Air Force missing man formation. If you're not riding two up, keep the pegs up.

Never roll without inviting Jesus along and my kook is that on my RoadStar the turn signals are controlled on one switch and you press to disengage them. After a turn they disengage automatically or press it. As I ride on long straightaways in rural Michigan, I find myself frequently pressing the button. Just taaaaappin’ away while I’m in the breeze.🤦‍♂️🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣

I pray at least once a day when riding, usually every time I get back on my bike.
The bell that came with my bike from the previous owner fell off a few months back, but luckily the prayer I say to my Lord Jesus before I ride counters any ill effects from not having a bell haha.

I've been riding since 1970. I've never thought about my rituals and never thought I had any. Well, I always look at the sky, where the sun is, what the skies look like. And I always check my pockets. Since 2015, I usually tap my Gremlin Bell with the toe of my boot.
I'm 69 now with well over 500k motorcycle miles on my butt. Being in the wind and weather long enough, you learn how to foresee any weather changes without looking or listening to a weather app.

Rider's rituals, Superstitions, Precautionary habits, Routines. They all have a place, all except those superstitions ((bells)) as far as I'm concerned., But everybody is entitled to do or not do as they wish. My ROUTINE is to put the machine in neutral & start it off the bike, let it warm up for at least a minute or two. As it's warming up I put on a jacket, or hoodie, or my leather vest/cut. I never ride with only a T-shirt. Next I pull my CC from the wallet to be ready to fuel up, keeping it 1/2 full at a minimum all the tyme. Then I remove my glasses, put on my helmet, put back on my glasses, then my gloves., gloves in any sort of weather, of which I have 3 pair. These steps give enough tyme for the motor to be reasonably good to go. In very cold weather, my neck warmer goes on before the jacket. While many don't do this, I invariably give a 2 finger down wave, routinely out of acknowledging respect & reminder to 'ride safe'. There's a certain crowd, whose ID shall remain silent, that will not wave in return, but I always offer it anyway. Weather riding with another biker or not, his view of a safe pull out into traffic, a stop sign, or from a light is not my view of a safe way out. Riding with others is staggered for me, never axle to axle, never side by side. Better to be safe than sorry.

Another reason for the green paint superstition is that in the bible one of the 3 horsemen rode a pale green horse and his name was death. And as far as the rear pegs go, I heard keep them them up, and that is for 2 reasons. First to keep evil spirits off. And the other is that if you come home with them down your wife might be asking you who was on the bike with you? Not good.

  • @DavidNewmanDr

  • @Yamahog

If you ride, your guardian does also .... on their own ride. There is no joy for your guardian to be riding as a back-pack.
Tire-Shine ...is a joke and something you would need to break a workers arm over if they put that on your tires after a bath. it's worse than the mould-release compound that you have on new tires.
Gremlin bells need to high enough up in the front of the bike so that they don't get knocked off by Gravelings..... never mind the height restriction of the bell-road distance .... meaning don't have it mounted where it will get knocked off by a speed bump or an odd rock, etc..
Riding ..... Side by side on the open stretch is ok,..... but in high traffic areas, the left side bike always takes the lead at intersections , and yeah, stagger your positions by 2~3 seconds at around 30 mph,, and around 4 to 5+ seconds when on the freeway at 60 + mph.
    Here I digress
    Stay Safe
