I bought Cymbidium Golden Elf at a show in January. After looking it up, I discovered that it is a warm grower and does not require a temperature drop in the fall and should bloom in summer/ fall. Much to my pleasant surprise, the leaves are slightly variegated along the edge. It has put out many new shoots. Looking forward to seeing what it does. At least it is not a giant!
I love your cymbidiums. They do produce stunning flowers. I need to do my ‘research’ and find a ‘warmer’ grower. I will need to add a cymbidium to my very small collection…😊
Yeah!!! Cymbidium was my pick for your discussion. Great video. I recently acquired 2 Cymbidiums and love them for the large size. I have the space (outdoors-Florida)so no issue there. Now I want blooms. I will follow your tips and hope for the best.
@@RogersOrchidsGardenandBonsai I love them but we have them in pots. Its so cold now, that mine are indoors. During summer they are happy under a tree and have some sun
Congratulations on your 3rd and 2nd place wins. I bought one of these cream coloured ones, NO ID, and its stunning. Im trying and watching a lot of your videos. Thank you so much
Thanks for the video, Roger, hit the spot at just the right time, just bought a Cymbidium Indian Summer and a Cymbidium Nagalex, to try my hand more seriously at them.
This is one of my favorite orchid varieties. I have 4 miniature hybrids. I have had then for 3 years and they are just beginning to be large enough to fill out a 4 inch pot so I'm hoping to see blooms soon. If I don't see any this year then I'll have to start looking for ways to get them cooler. I grow them indoors with good southerly light but am a cheap American and don't heat much in the winter. Fingers crossed.
Hi Roger, Thanks for the nice video I am quite convinced that now that you've got the sun hitting the roof everything will go back to grow well again. I certainly hope so for you and i am positive it'll make a significant change Keep updating.)
My only question is why you water and let drain into the same water? Won’t sicknesses be transferred? Even though they are fabulously healthy looking! Congratulations! What is in the water? I am in the wrong country now of course, Greece and it’s too darn hot here! Have problems with fungus infections killing my cymbidiums every year? Being born in New Zealand where is easier, I am very disappointed, and I I’ve cymbidiums so much!
I meant to say, I love cymbidiums so much! I like your comment about moving them into a cooler shed during heat waves! Hadn’t thought of that, although they will share with 4 cats those days!
Thank you Roger. A few years ago I bought a pack of five orchid virus tests. It seems to me that I paid about 75 Euros. I used them sparingly and all were negative.
Nitrogen (N) - Phosphorus (P) - Potassium (K) Here in California, a lot of people keep cymbidiums under a tree or some bushes. Keeps them in the shade during the hottest part of the summer with some sun in the mornings and evenings. Usually people say if the leaves are the color of an unripe banana, you know it's getting enough light. Maybe you can find a spot near the bushes by the fence?
I’m so jealous of your large cymbidium leaves I have just started growing cymbidiums and I have managed to kill three already with root rot There in free draining bark and I water them when they. Are dry. I am in west Australia My remaining four look very sad Thanks for the video
My Cymbidium keeled over shortly after potting it up - as usual 🙄. I'll keep my fingers crossed that Hannah's is really just stressed. It's such a lovely color. I think I have at least 2 Cymbidium pots stored away in the basement 🤔 and our local home improvement store used to sell them, in the garden section, in two different sizes. I will be there this Saturday, so I'll have a look if they still got them.
My main problem with those sorts of pots is the sizes they are sold in are in litres which is useless for me - I need measurements like width and depth in cm/mm. I think Rose pots may work as they are deep and sold in larger sizes?
@@RogersOrchidsGardenandBonsai i'm not sure about the rose pots, as I never had any, but the cymbidium pots here have the needed measurements on the bottom. The cymbidium I recently lost was a mini and its pot is 14cm in width and 16cm in depth. The ones in my basement should be bigger than that though, as they had the normal sized cymbs in them. I'll have an unplanned doctor's appointment coming up at Noon and will pass the home improvement store on the way. If it's not pouring down, like it says in the forecast, I'll go have a look. I'm curious now, lol. EDIT: So the two pots that I have are both 14cm in width and 16cm in depth. The home improvement store carries them in the same size. They are currently only available via order though, due to lack of storage space in the store. They also do have normal transparent "orchid pots" (they are sold as those but lack the air cone in the bottom) up to 21 cm in width. I think the depth is 1 cm less than the width on those.
Thank you . I have two new shoots on one tube of my cymbidium Castle mey jester. Any suggestion on what I need to watch out for? It’s been left out outside over winder!
I have used bloom boosters a lot on "other" plants and they usually only get money from your pockets instead of flowers on plants. Even a test with plants getting boosters and plants getting none doesn't show the result promised on the bottle
Hi there Roger, have found two cymbidiums with one or two burnt bulbs. Can they recover or have to be removed? Thanks heaps for all your very informative information you kindly share. 🇦🇺🥂
My Cymbidium is growing right now (there are new spikes) but I want to repot it. When should I do that? When is the best period for repoting Cymbidium?
Why are you so careful about contamination from that last plant to the others through the water but so blasé with the Miltonia that might still have Fusarium? The same precautions should be taken with both plants. As a retired microbiology team leader from a large water company I can assure you there are many pathogenic organisms who love water and will easily be transferred from one plant to another. When you use the jug of seaweed solution to soak roots just use individual cover pots. Pour separate aliquots through each plant into it's own pot and leave before discarding the liquid. You can keep each cover pot with it's own plant and in place of any black pots to deter algae 🤷♀️.

Most are cooler growers especially those hybrids based on the Chinese species.

I really enjoyed this video. I have only one cymbidium due to space and you answered a lot of my questions 😂
Thanks.

This wasn't one of the categories that got a lot of votes - it was just convenient to do that as the video as I was watering all of them anyways.
I have a cymbidium on my wish list because of this video! Good information presented in a logical format!
There are smaller sizes if space is an issue.
Thank you. I am new to Cymbidiums and were given 2. The one is blooming and has produced a second spike. I am enthralled with them
Most people don't like them as they can grow so large.

Thanks for this, we have plenty of rainwater here.

With wheels on the staging, they will not be fixed in one place and can all be moved together.

Not sure what you mean by 'burnt bulbs'?
@@RogersOrchidsGardenandBonsai Sorry Roger, burnt from the sun, bulbs have turned black
If the bulbs are leafless and black, they would probably be better removed.

My Cymbidium is growing right now (there are new spikes) but I want to repot it. When should I do that? When is the best period for repoting Cymbidium?
When it comes into growth - normally at the start of the growing season (Spring).
Virus in orchids usually causes color break in the flowers . Do any of the flowers have color break?
No - but the newer leaves look bad. Time will tell.
P = phosphorus, K = potassium
I do know! - I just have trouble sometimes remembering in the middle of making a video.
I am only care for super compact and fragrance ones. The rest is just too messy

The 'last plant' has a possible virus - the others don't.
