HiddenShadowGirl I'm almost 50, but this has been one of my favorite movies since I saw it for the first time probably back in 1972 or so. I think I was about 7. We didn't have VCR's or DVD's so we saw it at the movie theater and it was a huge deal. Can you imagine, a movie made 7 years or so prior still being shown in the movie theater? Everything goes to DVD in months now. The Lonely Goatherd song is my favorite.
The scene where Maria is on the stairs and Christopher is down below. He says, "I want you to stay, I ask you to stay". That scene pulls at your heart strings. The two were meant to be together on screen!! Thank you!!!
what a shame Chris Plummer couldn't have been stood at the top of the steps in the Cathedral when Julie retraced her steps it was an opportunity missed forever.
The story of how Charmian Farnon (stage name Carr) got the part of Liesl is fascinating. She was "discovered" while working at a department store in California by a shopper who urged her to audition for The Sound of Music's director Robert Wise. Charmian's mother arranged the audition, taking Charmian by surprise. The list of actresses she prevailed over included Mia Farrow, Geraldine Chaplin, Kim Darby, and others. Charmian was perfect for the role of Liesl von Trapp. Her beauty was breathtaking. She bore a striking resemblance to her movie father, Christopher Plummer.
A lot of people gave Julie Answers flack back in the day for her riske projects, and her self admitted tendency to talk like a sailor (which let's be real any actress trying to break free of a "pure: image has done this), but you know what? She is such a kind sweet, thoughtful lady and would be a treasure to know. I am grateful we get to see her candidly at least here. I could listen to her and Christopher talk for days about these sweet memories of theirs about this movie and experience.
marlenejojo1 Do you mean “risqué”? I agree w you. But her pure image is the truest one, I believe. Swearing like a sailor has no effect on purity. At least not in JA’s case.
Julie Andrews is a legend and a national treasure of Great Britain. You can see she’s had cosmetic surgery but then, if I had the money, I’d have cosmetic surgery. This would start with a breast enlargement, rhinoplasty and tummy tuck.
@@misplacedkiwi9498 Ok, but you see what extensive facial surgery can do. And so many botched up jobs. A disgrace... & for many famous actresses, a tragedy. You can't go back.
My grandma gave me this movie as a present for my 4th birthday. Immediately became obsessed and by the time I was 5 I knew every lyric of every song and my life's goal is to go on the same hill
I first saw the film when I was 15... & I saw it 7 times that year! Am 70 now & still love it & consider Julie Andrews the best female singer both sides of the Atlantic! No one can compare w her. What a tragedy for her (& us) to have lost her voice so prematurely. I truly feel for her. But we had her for her best years. An incredible gift!
It was deeply saddening when J.A. retired from singing, but in PRINCESS DIARIES 2, Julie was persuaded to sing a number that had been written to take into account the limitations of her vocal range; the song was "Your Crowning Glory", and she sounded great!
And they still have it... But then I think of her chemistry with Robert Goulet, James Garner and even her husband Blake Edwards, and so I think Plummer was right, when he said the chemistry was her, and he was just trying to keep it up.
They were both definitely crushing on each other during filming. You see it on screen and in the behind the scenes photos. Case in point, the photos of them on the rocks. People who are not attracted to each other don’t sit as close as they did.
@@ElleCee62978 There is an interview from 2015 (¿?), where the reporter says that they went to eat, they sat together and while they talked they bowed their heads so close that they looked like a married couple, even though there was also Elaine, Plummer's wife.

@@ElleCee62978 Totally agree. Even Julie said they wouldn't have worked. And I think the same, (and he would have been a very bad stepfather to Emma). That's why Julie was his eternal crush. Better a good friend, than a bad love ...
A beautiful touch to have her again walk the aisle at the Cathedral in Mondsee. I visited that church in a tour and was deeply touched. The Sound of Music is a worldwide cultural phenomenon…they have tours in Salzburg that go to the film’s locations (including the gazebo for sure)!and people were lined up to board the buses. My family had a lot of involvement with this film…my Dad, Bill Lee, did all of Plummer’s singing, every note was replaced by him once the film was completed. And my mom, Ada Beth, portrayed Sister Catherine (the one with the little round glasses) in the number How Do You Solve a Problem Like Maria. Having had a singing career of my own for 55 years, I sang in the chorus.
As a child he was a piano player and it was assumed by his parents growing up that he would be a classical pianist, although he became an actor instead.
This was beautiful. I'm listening to her memoir, and Julie was just so depressed during the filming of this. Although Diane makes it sound like she was alone with her baby, but she did have a full-time nanny named Kate. But other than that... yeah. It's crazy that she was so sad making something that has brought everyone such joy! I'm glad she's happier now. :)
What happens is that she was trained and educated under the slogan of "the show must go on". Problems or conflicts stay at home. Also, of her own character. Her two husbands as well as her friends and coworkers have testified to her cheerful, optimistic and bright personality... And certainly she had a babysitter, but there are countless photos where you can see Julie spending time with her baby. Of course, during the filmings, she needed someone to take care of the baby, even so between takes, the girl was with Julie. Many people involved in the film have said that Julie spent every spare moment with her baby. However, this is still "an employee" who you pay to take care of your daughter. It's not like she was a friend, or family member to lean on emotionally. When she recorded Mary Poppins, the babysitter was still there, but she had Tony there too. But this later changed when Tony decided that he didn't want to be the husband/manager of a movie star and wanted to make his own name for him. That's where the distancing began. And that was the reason for her sadness, the reason she felt alone. And this was what she and Blake tried to avoid later. Staying together even if they were working. Go to work, take their children with them (even if they had a babysitter, this allowed them to spend time with them), and then return home.

Great choice with Maria and the Captain. The dance performance was showing the pair were more than acting. To bad they didn't marry for real
