I made a mystery quilt during the pandemic with an old FQ bundle from my stash. My tastes have changed and I didn’t love how it was going together. I dubbed it the “ugly quilt”. My sister was visiting and saw it and thought it was great, she loved the 30s reproduction prints. I was over the moon happy to quilt it and gift it to her for Christmas! She loves it and tells me she snuggles with it whenever she watches a movie. So glad that quilt found a home! 😊❤️

Lol.. I followed a pattern, made a whole quilt top and hated it. I took the whole thing apart and made it in another quilt. I learned a lot. I also have taken out a whole colour way in precuts that I did not like. Learning to make it my own. I am getting more confident.

When I started quilting over 15 years ago, I was confused and worried about picking fabrics. What has helped me now and looking back at several quilts was finding a beautiful back fabric or “main” fabric that represented the person receiving it and choosing matching or coordinating colors from those fabrics for the quilt and also using those fabrics to come up with a design to make

One thing that didn’t get mentioned is using a color wheel to help in picking colors. There are many options on the market and most come with general instruction on how to use them successfully. There are tons of videos and blog posts out in the world also. It can really be a great guide until you become more comfortable with color. The other tip I have when making a pattern with different fabric than what is pictured is to try and replicate the scale of the fabric chosen by the pattern designer. Pick the colors you like first, then pay attention to the scale of the print in the written pattern. Find a print within your chosen set of colors that most closely matches the same scale of the original fabric. Often, patterns are written with the scale of the particular fabric in mind, either to showcase a focal print, or just simply add a little texture to a background with a tone on tone or low volume print. One last thing is to pay attention to your contrast. For instance, most modern quilt patterns are written with high contrast in mind. If you don’t necessarily like the colors of the written pattern, substitute colors you enjoy that offer the same contrast. Having too many “medium tone” fabrics in a quilt can make secondary designs within a pattern get lost. Try and balance lights, mediums, and darks. In the end however, it’s your project and technically if you like it, great! There really is no right or wrong. It’s all about the journey, like Sherri and Chelsea said 😊 Enjoy the process of learning what your style is.

I sewed a large quilt top and didn't like it; started taking apart by seam ripping;then just cutting; then decided..forget it..I donated it for fabric to resale shop. Happy to have it gone and the guilt of fabric loss.😁

Wow, what an amazing story about Jean's Snowball quilt. And it was very interesting to hear Sherri's story about color selection. I learned to quilt at 30 and always knew what colors I wanted to use. It never crossed my mind that being a stitcher since the age of 10 give me that POV so easily. I had been selected color/thread combinations for needlepoint for 15+ years. So thanks to Sherri for helping me put that together:) And I can't wait for ginghams in seashore drive. I have always loved plaids, checks, stripes, and ginghams.

I guess as you do this for a living your outlook is different. I make quilts to give away to family and friends and a few have beige/brown colour schemes in their homes, and although that’s not my vibe I’ve made a few quilts in those colours. I try to make what they’d like and have that freedom as I’m not selling anything. Typing this I’ve realised that where you live may effect what colours you choose. In your lovely sunny homes the colours look bright and vibrant, but in wet, grey England our homes often are decorated in creams and browns as we need that warmth. Created some food for thought.

Love your podcast and love your new collection. Ironically, I was listening to this as I was sewing a table runner (Mini Yellow Brick Road Pattern) using your Balboa Collection. Later on in your podcast you talk about colors and mention that you tend to stay away from “brown”. What would you call the darker colors in this collection and your Balboa collections? I would have categorized them as “brown”.

If a collection has prints that have larger white patterns, that can look really weird with white sashing. Using a different color for the sashing can enable the use of those fabrics.

I so enjoy listening to you, actually watching on UA-cam. My husband noticed and mentioned it reminded him of a Saturday Night Live skit, NPRs Delicious Dish. My dilemma… I’m working on a puzzle piece quilt with Kona Cotton Colors, all solid. In laying out the colors I became frustrated. Are there thoughtful ways to lay out 25 colors? There are 72 pieces, 3 of each. Brown, we thought we’d leave the brown out. Tried ordering the colors diagonally and diagonally back and forth in graduated same colors pattern, just didn’t like the way it worked. Wondering if planning quadrants or just putting 4 together at a time then laying out the larger blocks would be a better. Any ideas would be great. Thank you
