Fat Quarter Shop has a FABULOUS video beginner series for learning how to quilt. I cant recommend it enough!!!
Melanie Ham’s UA-cam “Learn to Sew” video playlist has amazing beginning sewing project tutorial list. She goes through placemats, napkins, potholders, zippered pouch with a ruffle, and an apron. I HIGHLY recommend any beginner to start with this video series because she goes very slow and explains the steps perfectly. Once you’re done with those six projects, she also has a super easy beginner patchwork quilt (“First Quilt” playlist) that is done from one charm pack so you can get the hang of the quilt process. I got a sewing machine for Christmas 2020 and was brand spanking new to sewing. I had never touched a sewing machine or a spool of thread prior to January 2021. I started learning from Melanie Ham’s videos and now I’ve already made a table runner, two throw size quilts and several quilted zippered pillows!
Check out Fat Quarter Shops’s tutorial/quilt along for beginners too! Nice!
I LOVE Melanie ham!!!!
Just catching up and shocked to hear my name announced as one of the winners. Thanks so much! I am currently making Chelsea‘s Forest Drive quilt, and I am loving it. Really looking forward to more shopping in her shop!
Good Morning, what an informative episode. You both answered so many lingering questions this novice quilter has. Such great questions and answers. I particularly liked the question from the new quilter and your answer. I oftentimes feel that If all my seams don’t match, my points are cut off, or the quilt is not perfectly square, I’m embarrassed to send it to a longarm quilter so it sits in a corner unfinished. I think my need for wanting to be “perfect” is holding me back. You both are helping me through this. As a mom & grammy, I always told the kiddos “practice, practice, practice”, so don’t totally understand my fear of not being perfect with quilting. All your information and your videos are helping me follow my new mantra which is “progress not perfection”. I absolutely love watching you both on UA-cam and nice seeing your handsome face, Billy 🌻
Big thumbs up for travelling to England. I did a Trafalgar 21 day tour to England, Scotland, Ireland and Wales, wonderful trip totally a 5 star. And England has beautiful Liberty fabrics. Thanks for sharing 👍❤️😊
Billy, I was also going to share that we took a Trafalgar tour through 9 difft countries in Europe. We had an exceptional guide who took us to "less touristy" locations as well as normal tour sites. We spent an afternoon on horse drawn ride to a small village in Switzerland where they had local cheese, etc. Would go again in a heartbeat!
Hi, I'm a retiree living in Spain. Recently found your site and am enjoying your show very much. While I love living here I miss the US quilt shops. Quilt fabric here if you can find it is very expensive.
Poly thread is used with cork too... in the right weight. you guys all rock. I look forward to your pod casts and all videos!!
In our area a quilt shop is like 45 minutes from my house and I don't have a car!! So I have learned everything on line!
I really love the quilt on the wall hanging behind you ! I love the fabric and the pattern!
I found Fat Quarter Shop's "Ultimate Beginner's Quilt" series very helpful, months after I started.
Oh yes, definitely visit the uk 🇬🇧. It’s a wonderful place especially in the summer. I was born and raised in London and I’ve worked next door to some historic places, ie Tower of London, Horseguard’s Parade, Trafalgar Square and before Covid-19 I worked opposite St Paul’s Cathedral. I’ve been to the USA many times. I’ve visited Las Vegas, San Francisco, Atlanta, New York, Boston and Hawaii - beautiful country.
For your commenter who wants to learn to quilt. Fat Quarter Shop did an ultimate beginner series that looked like something I wish I had 40 years ago. She could look there. Love your videos.
On one of our trips to England with my husband's college group, we entered our hotel in London to see a "murder mystery" game being put on for a Christmas party. Such fun to see the "victim" dropping "dead" in the middle of the lobby! So very British!
I usually always use an aurifil neutral to piece. I use fabric match to bind, I like to machine appliqué a lot and that color depends on my theme. Sometimes I use the thread for satin stitching to emphasize, or decorate with a decorative stitch. So many fun thread colors, but I only like solids unless I am particularly wanting to make a very specific statement piece. Good content on threads.
Since you love literature I would urge you to visit Boston and the Orchard House - where Louisa May Alcott lived and the Old Manse, in Concord, where both Ralph Waldo Emerson and Nathanial Hawthorne lived. Both the tours there are incredible.
I like your quilt on the wall I purchased layerscake and found paisleys. For the quilt and I used the same border fabric. Love your podcast. Only one I listen to.
Thank you answering my thread question! I feel honored that you chose my question for the podcast😁. Thanks for the info on that and the other topics. Se you next time.
Just a little note about starching and precuts... i starch mine and you will get about half an inch of shrinkage. But only in the width direction. Ive starched a square from a layer cake and after it has dried it measures 10 X 9.5 jelly roll will stay at 2.5 but you will loss a tiny bit in the width from the selvedge side.
Congratulations to the winners
Thank you for not just answering my question but also making it a discussion topic, and providing great feedback! And thanks to the other listeners and viewers who added suggestions to the comments! I’m excited to work on an outlet that allows me to be productive but gives me a few minutes from Covid and the impact it’s had on homelessness. I work for a set of shelters and a soup kitchen and Covid has had us stretched beyond what we ever knew we could handle. Thank you!
Congratulations Jamie Iglesias and Jean Cameron!!! 🎉🎉
I just began quilting during the pandemic. In addition to A Quilting Life, Fat Quarter Shop Ultimate Beginner series walks thru the skills needed. Also Just Get It Done Quilts with Karen Brown has great beginner videos for sewing straight, ironing technique, and cutting.
How fun to see Billy! I didn’t win and that’s okay because I learn something every podcast. Thank you all for doing these. 🥰
I love Heart Strings ♥️
I was in Germany, in January. I had a grandson born there last summer, and because of the word I refuse to use, I was unable to see him until he was eight months old. That was the first time I had ever been to Europe, and of course because of the unmentionable word, I didn’t get to see much. I was able to see, that Germany is a beautiful country. I have also been to Japan! And again, it was to see a new grandchild. My daughter’s husband is in the military, so I have had some opportunity to travel to foreign lands! If you get the opportunity, do it!
Good morning ladies and Billy😃
Not everyone has a "local quilt shop" i mean there is a quilt shop 110 miles from my house but I don't call that local. Also, not everyone has classes available. UA-cam videos are a great help
Come to Montreal!!! 😀 ( Québec, Canada )🇨🇦
I have been using Schmetz Microtex for years!
Thank you guys for another great video!!! Nothing gets me more excited to talk about than traveling!!! I’ve been to quite a bit of international places but there are tons of places in the US that I want to see too!! My top place internationally I want to see is Great Britain, I’ve been to London but it was a day trip from Paris. Since I had my DNA done and I’m 85% British I would love it!! I could tell that you guys would love to travel all over too!
I’m excited for the next podcast too!! Probably lots of new things happening this year that will be interesting for all of us!!
Thanks for another fun and informative podcast. I always learn something new. You really seem to enjoy what you do and have lots to share and teach. I look forward to this podcast and what I might learn next. Thanks.
Congratulations 🥳 winners!
Thank you for the thread info. I sew on a 1958 Morse and it hates Aurifil. I found three threads it does like, King Tut, MSQC and Connecting Threads. I’m looking forward to your thoughts on the DMC.
Great topics and tips today. Thank Sherri and Chelsi for everything you share with the quilting world. Billy you have grown so much in this new, to you, endeavor. I love how you embrace suggestions and ideas given by viewers.
Congratulations to the winners!!!!!
Thank you (all three of you) for the content. I love listening to you and answering those great questions!
I’m sorting all of my scraps by color so I can start working on that 100 block quilt and not buy fabric! Looking forward to FQS to get their supplies in so I can make block 2 of yours!
Feeling inspired, motivated, and excited!!!
Enjoy your summer!!!!!!
Fun podcast today. Thanks to all three of you for your hard work and dedication that brings us all the good information you have to share. Congratulations to the winners! 👏🏻💕👏🏻
Oh! Go the the UK!!! England is totally charming. Scones & tea a daily must!!! Great show today ladies (and Billy!) !!!
What about visiting Canada, especially the west or east coasts? Not too far but in some places a world away. Always great podcasts. I always learn something or you reinforce some things I have been doing correctly. Thanks
Thank you for a very informative podcast, you ladies and Billy are always so upbeat
Patriotic quilts are some of my favorites & happy Flag Day 🇺🇸
On the topic of borders, sometimes I make a conscious decision to not add a border, but mostly I get so excited to finish a quilt that I just plain forget and don't notice the missing border til its done and bound. No one has ever complained.
I just discovered Jodi Barrows square in a square method for flying geese, half square triangles and square in a square block. It is fantastic especially for scrappy blocks.
Great podcast! :-) Come to Norway! :-)
Sherri, Chelsi and Billy, you would love Ireland. 🇮🇪 Hmmm, quilting cruise around the UK with Ireland land tour.......I’m in!
I’ve starched all my fabric for a quilt then I washed and dried it, it still came out with the texture my non starched quilts get. Maybe it didn’t shrink as much overall but I don’t think I’d be able to tell the difference. Plus, I would think fabric shrinks if you use steam and/or Best Press.
If you go to Australia, you MUST "come across the ditch" to us here in NZ. It's only a 3 hr flight
Thanks for another great video. I so love getting your notifications!
Have learned so much from this one. And loved your travel places to visit. Come to Australia, you will have so much fun here. It is much bigger than it looks, so allow heaps of time. ☺️
Great pod cast. Learned a lot about half square triangle and flying geese cutting.
I love Superior Threads and they are polyester.
Superior has great polyester thread
Congratulations to the winners! Awesome gifts!
Congratulations to the winners! Loved this video and I’m looking forward to the next video.
My Janome 8900 handles different thread weights just fine. I realize that's fortunate for me!
Good morning. Love your podcast. You are so knowledgeable and Billy does a great job. I love that you include him. Another thread question. Do you use prewound bobbins? I think they are polyester.
Could you please give some good reasons to buy the coordinated thread packs? Unless you are top stitching or doing appliqué I don’t see why you would need them. But they are pretty😀
I used old spools of thread and sewing accessories I inherited from my mom and put them in a nice shadow box with a photo of us sewing:)
I have used DMC Cotton Machine Embroidery Thread #762 Very Light Pearl Grey for piecing for years. Less lint than other brands.
Good Morning loved this session. Oh Billy you're a handsome one
Awesome podcast! Thank you for posting!
That was a lovely session. Hope you get to travel when you’re able. 💕🇦🇺
Congrats to the winners! As always great show!
How about y’all make a test quilt using washed background with precuts?
I did not know you had Iowa ties. I am from North Central Iowa. 😄
Sherri, I love the Moda honey bun quilt a long. Are you planning to use sashing in your quilt or just sew the blocks together. Thank you.
Hello Ladies!! Love your podcast. I have a question about fabric bleeding. They say that we don’t need to worry anymore about bleeding, but I have lately had trouble with reds. I was told that you should prewash your fabric and then before you use it you should lay a wet paper towel on it for a few minutes. If the material bleeds onto that paper towel then you should throw it away and not use it. Fabric is expensive. I would have trouble throwing it away. I see that you use a lot of reds in your quilts. Do you have any suggestions for this issue?
I was an all cotton thread person until I got my new sewing machine. For some reason, the aurifil thread is very linty with this machine. I switched to Glide thread and have not had a minute’s trouble with my machine and haven’t noticed any problems with my piecing.
Remember bedrunners are great beginning projects.
Hi! Thanks for the ongoing podcasts and information. What is the quilt above Chelsi's head with the star in the middle? Thanks
Great podcast. Love the viewer questions. What do you do when you start piecing and your fabric frays really badly. Also if you discover a darker fabric that has frayed and you can see it through the lighter fabric after all sewn together. Thank you.
Great podcast, always learn something.
If you use jelly rolls, the width does not shrink, only the length when starching. I use Sta-Flo 1:1 and soak the fabric and air dry completely.
Interesting.
iM a beginner but i love sherri video i learn alot!!!!! made a little bag :D
I mix pre washed and not washed all the time. Nothing bad ever happened. Lets not be too stiff about that
Love your podcast! My longarmer gets "cranky" if my quilts do not have borders. She doesn't like all of the seams. Do you find that to be an issue? Thanks Let me say, I do LOVE my longarmer, she is great.
Thanks for the cool Q and A!!!!! I m thinking about doing one of the Patterns withe the Hand sewn english paper piecing. But I'm not able to get the pre cut honeycoms in Europa. Can you tell me how big the are? Thanks. Iris Germany
One method you could use for EPP templates is getasquiltingstudio.com . If you sign up for her newsletter you get access to free printable hexagons, diamonds, etc in many sizes. Print onto cardstock and trim apart. It works very well. I hope it's okay to post this. I am not connected to her in anyway. She is in Romania.
Great podcast!!! Would love to see Marion join you for a session!! :)
I’ve watched all your podcasts and have really enjoyed them!! But I have to admit that the amount of the commercials are VERY frustrating. 😔
Love the quilts!!
what is the name of the quilt on the ladder above Chelsea 's head? Love all the tips and trcks!
I was once told when you are worried about shrinkage not being the same to quilt it heavier so it would not be as noticeable. I do not know if I ever mixed fabrics
For mixing prewashed with precuts what if you sprayed the precuts with water and let them dry
You will have to make sure they are still large enough to cut the piece for the quilt.
I would love to know the thread that your longarmer recommended!
Have you ever gotten pen ink on the table quilt during these podcasts? If so how did you remove it?
Ummm…. I probably missed it but where do you get the DMC thread? I can find DMC floss but not thread. 🤷🏼♀️
I can't find a source for DMC quilting thread, could you please post a source? I'd love to find it and try it out.
What is name on the 3rd pattern on the ladder on Sherri’s side?
👍👍👍👏👏👏🥰🥰🥰🌷🌷🌷
I would never get anything sewn if I felt the need to starch every single fabric I plan to use!
Congratulations to the winners
What is the link for the DMC thread?
