Man I am hyped for you guys seeing the season finale.
bro Im so excited
Yess
god, the part where Leif finally gets confirmation that it's Thorfinn just _kills_ me every time... Leif is such a sweet person, it hurts to see him cry. it's so bittersweet, considering how different Thorfinn is now.
also, I just want to talk about that whole backstory bit, like, Askeladd and Thorfinn are so similar. Askeladd hated his father so much that he plotted to kill him, just like how Thorfinn has been trying to kill Askeladd. but Askeladd started when he was a little bit older. a little bit less childish and idealistic. and he succeeded... and now, using all of his sneaky, underhanded methods, he has grown up to become just like the man he killed out of hatred. Thorfinn feels about Askeladd the exact same way that Askeladd felt about his father, but Askeladd has lost something over the years.
after killing his father, as he's grown older, Askeladd has committed acts of violence against innocent people who all have the moral right to hate him. what difference is there between his own mother, and the victims of his violence? the only reason why Askeladd is even still here and capable of behaving this way, is because he's stronger than most, more cunning than most... and he doesn't care about anything anymore. if he cared for even one thing in this world, it'd be massively hypocritical. he wouldn't deserve to keep it. the people who hate him could try to destroy it, and they'd have every right to do so. and he'd have to imagine what it'd feel like to lose the things he cares about... he'd have to fear for that outcome, and prevent that outcome, by not tempting karma to come back and bite him. he might have to stop being the villain in other people's stories.
but he's been at this for too long. he's in too deep. his men have expectations, and his list of crimes is already too long to be forgiven. if Askeladd ever wants to really care about anything again, he couldn't rightfully complain if someone stole it away or destroyed it. he's had it coming for a while now. and every time he does something that makes him detestable from another person's perspective, he becomes more and more his father's son. it's as though his blood is proof that he doesn't deserve to even try and be a good person. he wasn't built for it. and Thorfinn has been following Askeladd for so long, and killing so many people along the way... Askeladd knows he's been ruining this kid... the man is too smart not to see that. and within that, the one act of rebellion that Thorfinn has left against this man's influence over his life, is his resistance to picking up the lessons that he actually decides to teach.
Thorfinn maintains something that Askeladd doesn't... and at first, it doesn't seem beneficial. he maintains his anger. and while his anger makes him a sloppier fighter, and prevents him from winning in a duel against Askeladd, I would say Thorfinn's anger is also the last hope he has of not turning out like Askeladd, or Askeladd's father before him. Thorfinn is a walking contradiction right now, because anger is an emotion felt most potently by good people when they see something wrong. Thorfinn's anger is proof that he understands injustice, and he isn't done caring about it. Askeladd used to feel this way... he was angry at his father for abusing and neglecting his mother. things like that used to matter to him. Thorfinn still has something that Askeladd lost a long time ago.
and yeah, Thorfinn is staying on the tougher path. he doesn't really know what to do with his anger yet, and it's so much harder to maintain a principle, like demanding a duel, rather than killing Askeladd in his sleep and being done with all of this right away. back when he first tried at the age of six, Askeladd might've even let him. but Thorfinn maintains at least a child's petulant idea of nobility. Askeladd has had to watch Thorfinn maintain this primordial moral spark, and Thorfinn has shoved that in his face day after day, for years. Askeladd may deride Thorfinn for his naivety and misspent energy... but he cannot deny the endless depths of Thorfinn's tenacity.
on top of that, there's still the legend of Artorius... this comforting story that Askeladd's mother told to him in his childhood... which might be the last pure thing that Askeladd believes in. much like Thorfinn's lingering thoughts of Vinland... this idea of a true hero, or a peaceful place, untouched by the horrors of the world. a concept that even people who live surrounded by violence can hold in their mind as a comforting ideal. but Askeladd's nihilism runs so deep that he can't keep this concept for himself anymore. he basically assumes that he's too ruined for the legend to have anything to do with him. to Askeladd, he and his men render the world into hell wherever they go... they bring it with them. they are not fit to enter paradise... if they were allowed in, it wouldn't be paradise anymore.
but thinking back to the fourth episode of the series, right before Thors died... Askeladd asked him to lead them. and while he played it off as a joke at the time, for a long moment there, he was serious. it was as though he could almost believe that he'd found Artorius, the fabled hero from the legend, standing right in front of him. but his cynicism causes him to betray that last pure belief, and it only hurts worse to see Thors, noble in his death, leaving the world behind with only the wicked left in it.
deep down, there is something that Askeladd really wants... and he knows he has no right to ask for it.
This was a great read. Great job on putting it all together
@@FlashyDolphin thank you! I honestly love this part of the story so much... a lot of it ties right back to the beginning, the cohesiveness is seriously satisfying. Vinland Saga is something really special.
@@kamuyking551Vinland saga really is something special, this is proof of it. I’ve never seen an anime move people like this, the way it gives people perspective is phenomenal and comments like yours are such a joy to read.
@@lord.nate03 thank you! and yeah, Vinland Saga is great... I think it's because it upholds very idealistic morals, but it tests them in very realistic ways. at every turn, the story asks the people who try to be good, to do so under the most dire of circumstances. and Thorfinn himself is a person who had to be brought back to believing in this, after languishing in anger and cynicism for so long. I love that the story bothers to show why a person would come back to this. it won't just make the assumption that this is easy to accept.
05:58 Man, Lief asking himself “how cold this have happened?,” hits so hard. I was just talking to a coworker who just finished Season 1 of Vinland about how slim the chances of two people being reunited like this was during that time period.
It’s as you guys said; “ what if they don’t recognize each other?” Or even if they happened to not pass each other that split second in York that day, they could have gone their entire lives without being reunited.
Yet still, ALL Thorfinn cares about is revenge, even above his own mother’s health. He completely disregards how much time and effort Lief has put into tracking him down the last decade, and blows him off to continue on his path of hatred and vengeance.
Makes me so sad tbh
Y’all are lucky you can watch several episodes of season 2 at once, I loved it but the week-to-week schedule was brutal 💀
The week to week is such a grind
The final duel and only friendship between Askeladd and Bjorn was so beautiful and sad. And that's what makes Askeladd such a compelling character. He's not just smart and strong. That is to say, the contradictions and conflicts within him. His identity is in his mother's blood and Welsh. But he's also the son of the father he hates most, and a Viking he hates most.
Therefore, his words are very deep and will have a great impact on the lives of Thorfinn and Canute.
23 x 24 is SUPER PEAK. Season 2 is ULTRA PEAK
I agree with you completely.

every time when Askeland says something I feel like I'm not enough man to understand what he is really saying. Askeladd is an really interesting character.
Man i know i’m glad they watched vinland saga can’t wait to see s2
I don't know man... They're new to anime and from what I've seen, they seem to enjoy hype stuff the most (which isn't bad). So I'm not sure they'll be able to appreciate season 2. Add to that the fact they are group reactors which makes it harder to focus, and it might not go very well.
@@mohanadbakain282I got faith. They already discussed how they would feel about a less action-packed season, and they were fine with it.

Idk how you guys do it but this is the best way to rewatch a show. Hit all the highlights and get to see peoples reaction. Love this channel
08:57 it IS kinda nuts watching the show humanize Askeladd like this, someone who is, as viewers, had every reason to dislike since the very beginning. Just killed his “only friend,” and still apologizes to Thorfinn for keeping him waiting.
So excited for the finale! and then S2 😀
You guys should have had potatoe chips for the death note finale 😂
S1 finale is amazing, but S2 will change you forever.
Love the cups! I need to get myself one. Love your reactions as always.
YES BOYS I’ve been anticipating the horn glasses/ tankards getting broken out!
As always, thanks for not disappointing!!

I'm even more excited for your reactions to Goatland Saga than I was when I discovered your channel with AOT reactions
17:30 at the end of that episode (episode 6), is the moment Thorfinn becomes so single minded on his goal for revenge. After that he would do anything Askellad told him for a duel, and now ten years later hes suffering from a sunk cost fallacy. If he stops and doesn't kill Askellad what was the point of all the wrong he has done. In episode 21 you see him avoid talking about his mom and sister, he knows he abandoned them and has nothing to show for it. Instead he has just done his fathers killers biding. So that's why he yells at Leif, Leif is just reminding him of how he is doing the exact opposite of what his dad would want and disguising his actions as "obligatory just revenge". People say Thorfinn is a bad/ boring character in the prologue. But he's just so well written IMO, the story instead focuses more on Askellad after episode six as Thorfinn is on a one track mindset directed towards revenge. Askellad acts as a mirror/ parallel to what Thorfinn is becoming by chasing after revenge. Just like Askellad he'll become "just another viking", the thing he hated.
If you have finished S1, theres a good video on Vinhards youtube channel all about Thorfinn's character in S1. It is about the manga but only the stuff covered in S1 (really good video)

i love how they call thorfinn torfin and thorkell torkell because that's how you pronounce it in japanese haha
When you watch season two just know that you have got to let it cook, and once it's done cooking you will have a five star meal
hearing the commentary from you guys after these two episodes makes me really happy that S2 went the direction it did. you guys are gonna love it
for thorfinn you gotta keep in mind this kid hasn't had most regular life lessons you would learn from ppl raising you during those 11 years. he's an ass to leif and doesn't want to hear about his mom or sister because all he's known for 11 years is revenge and hatred for askeladd, he's quite literally a wild animal hunting his "prey"
For some reason, based on the thumbnail, I thought, Jake would be drinking out of a custom horn made out of a pringle can😅
😂😂😂 that would be sick
What you guys were talking about when tuet anime makes you FEEL the emotions... Thats a great reason why this anime is so good
The end of the prologue is near
The finale is almost here! And then on to the LEGENDARY Season 2!!!
Askellad is just medieval Batman.
What?😄 Batman wouldn't kill an entire village
Can't wait for s2 ❤

You're bot supposed to vibe with thorfinn right now. You can understand him but you can see he is the complete opposite of what he's supposed to be. And that agonizing cry in his last scene shows that he sees that too

You have Thorfinn prime way too low. Askeladd admitted to Thorfinn having the capabilities to defeat him while he was a kid
@@deeegeeekay Thorfinn in S1 is not stronger than Askeladd prime.
@@KatakuriUchiha22 he said himself he could’ve won with control over his emotions. definitely not easily though but cmon he’s putting up more of a fight against thorkell than askeladd ever could
@Daniel-ed8dl so you're proofing my point...🤦♂️ he COULDVE won against an old Askeladd, it's not even he would've won he's saying he could have. So did I just misinterpret Bjorn's reason for wanting the duel? You guys seem to think he just wanted to die as a warrior. But I thought the reason he challenged Askeladd to a duel is because of him saying he hates the Danes.
Yes you misinterpreted it. It was made pretty clear that Bjorn was gonna die and the only way to go to Valhalla is to die honorably in a duel.
