So many dogs like this little one never make it out of the shelter because they each need someone to look at them as an individual and give them the treatment they need. Some dogs need space and time, some dogs need to know their fear won’t push someone away. It’s a huge task!

Indeed! I have a chi like this. Adopted her when she was four. She's fourteen now. Obviously, she has made improvements, but still skittish and still bites others. She chose me as her "one" human and has never/will not ever bite me, but continues to bite my husband impulsively. We accept her. She has had other dogs to help her along here at home and we simply give her the best life we can. She's never been alone and I'm always at home. I think despite her nervousness, she knows deep in her heart that she is loved ❤️ ( you would think by now 🤷‍♀️ )

@@peace-and-quiet Yep you just gotta meet them where they are, sometimes...sounds like you've helped her live her best life! God bless you and your hubs for that. Nice thing about small dogs is that even when they've got problematic behaviors, you can manage them because they're little guys. My rotten little baby (not a chi) was an angry little biter but usually only with MOM & DAD! HAHAHA With everyone else, acted like a little angel. Brat! But we knew how to handle her. She was only a menace at home, and a small one.

I adopted a severely abused Chi, it took almost 2 months before he trusted me enough to let me touch him. I used the 3 ingredients to gain his trust….time, patience and a ton of love. When the breakthrough came he turned into my teddy bear. I loved him so much ❤️. He passed in my arms at age 16 covered in my tears.

@@electrobuster5483 I'd like to emphasize, as someone who does behavior modification in rehabilitating abused and neglected dogs, that the last thing he said about "putting it into submission" which means forcibly holding your dog down on it's side or back, presumably to teach him who's boss, is one of the worst and most misguided pieces of information that people get. There is no respected trainer in the world that will tell you to do that. There are still other people who advocate for it though, but it's based on non scientific, outdated "dominance theory" belief, and like I said, it's one of the most discouraged practices among respected trainers. Sorry but I have to say something when I see someone giving really bad advice like that. Cheers!

Chihuahuas are often anxious little dogs, and biters. Yes, they get a bad rap in shelters for that reason.
But there’s no “bad” chihuahua imo. They just need patience & kindness. They will bond very strongly to their “trusted” people.
Anyway, that’s my take as a chihuahua owner & chihuahua rescue operator. ♥️

All true. Animal control said mine snapped at them when they rescued him. Honestly I cannot imagine this at all, has NEVER snapped at anyone in the 7yrs since!! But yes, they are fearful and anxious and can be tricky at first. But oh my yes, they bond more than any dog breed I've ever had. I'm inseparable from mine now. Wonderful breed. I'm a total convert.

    • @Teenage_Mutant_Ginga_Ninja
      @Teenage_Mutant_Ginga_Ninja 2 роки тому +12

There's no such thing as a "bad" dog in general. They're either feral, raised wrong, abused or have some mental illness they can't help. Also just being scared and unsure makes things hard for them.
I saw once someone say ”imagine you're naked in a strange place where people talk to you in a language you don't understand. Now imagine they just wanna touch and play with you and drag you out of your comfort zone. Now you know at least a little bit about what being a dog is like."
It makes me a bit sad how dogs have evolved alongside us as our partners yet most people don't even understand them. It's really not that hard. You may not be able to talk with them and pinpoint their problems easily but it sure isn't hard to notice a problem and help to fix it with them.

This is why I picked Bastion when I saw him. The shelter worker was trying so hard to convince me he was worth it but I'd already fallen. He wouldn't even make direct eye contact and stood stiff in the corner. There was no warm up and while he didn't have defense issues like this it was still slow progress getting him to trust us. While we could be in the same room. It was so much time quietly setting treats down closer to us and feeding him and letting him around our older dog to see he was safe. A year later he is still skittish but will go on walks, approach new people (one on one) and likes to cuddle up at night. If you have it in you, it is worth the work.

Most of the videos I see show rescued dogs that immediately turn into loving cuddle bugs with the fosters or rescuers. And how much time would that be? I was *very* aggressive about giving my rescue kitten a taste of her new life, she hadn't been eating at the shelter after all her siblings got adopted away, and had spent 3 out of her 5 months alive in a cage. I wanted her to turn around *as fast as possible.* I gave her a neckrub on her first night in my home, so that she would be *less* stressed *faster,* and she was purring before night one, and eating by day two. Patience is an essential component to treatment, but so is action. The results speak for themselves, the rescue kitten I talked about is the one cuddling my face in my profile pic, and this chihuahua got well and then adopted.

Well if she had adopted her that’d be fine but she was the foster getting the dog ready for adoption. There are a lot of animals in need and if you take your time based on their wants, then that could potentially take time, money, and shelter away from other animals. So unfortunately that’s not always a realistic option.

@@angel1202003 I have a powerful reaction to the misery of others. I heard her story, and couldn't wait to adopt when I knew the answer was that she needed to bond with someone, and soon. Black cat, sick and undersized from not eating, not eating from depression, depressed from loneliness, with the saddest eyes I've personally seen on an animal. Her chances of being adopted were abysmal, and all she needed was love, so I wasted no time and gave her the best tiny neckrub I could manage, *then* left her alone to get to know the house.
Dogs tend to bond quickly with me, for comparison. They kind of come naturally to me, the cat stuff is only since my 20s. I was taught by a cat person to get them used to being messed with while they are young, and since the two kittens weren't acting dangerously, I felt safe putting my hands on the situation from the start. The other cat didn't need any immediate attention, so my reaction was specific to the one cat and situation.

Ah, the double-leash of the Paranoid Dog Mom. I recognize that well. Harness + collar and a leash attached to both. Did the same with my very frightened rescue chi X, because I knew she would panic and bolt if she got free. Nice job on this little pupper, so wonderful to hear she is in her forever home!

That was nice to see. It answers one of my "what if" questions:
    1. What if a "shut down" and "spooked" dog was taken out of its comfort zone and gently caressed? Would that work? It has here, thanks. I would have wrapped the dog in a blanket; it might offer more comfort, at first, then hands.
    2. What if there were other dogs? The video does not indicate how long the other dogs had been with the new dog. Would the scared dog see how the other dogs felt safe when handled by humans? If there are other dogs then I would not force the dog, I would just make it comfortable for the dog to feed and sleep. In time, in the help of the other dogs, I suspect that the scared dog would "come around" on its own. But I don't know so I am asking you. Thanks.

In my opinion with that first question, forcing a dog out of their comfort zone like this is the wrong thing to do, it just happened to work out with this specific dog. Wrapping her in a blanket probably would’ve actually been worse because she would feel even more trapped. It probably would’ve been better if the woman first let her settle in and then *gradually* start interacting more.

As someone who does behavior modification in rehabilitating abused and neglected dogs for over 10 years, that the way it was shown and implied on this video, that this girl absolutely forced this dog into an even more fearful state by rushing it and pushing things the way she did. It is definitely not the proper way. What she's doing is called "flooding", which means she's overwhelming the dog and she's just lucky that it seems to have worked out in this case. But you're correct in thinking that you need to go at the dog's speed and at their comfort level. I've worked with feral dogs that took months before they even let me hand feed them. You can't force a dog to be comfortable, which is what this girl was trying to do.
