The only reason there is a poverty problem is because of SCAD. The parents of the students buy all the houses in Sav and jack up the prices to be completely unaffordable for locals. They're also tearing down affordable housing to create dorms for Scad kids.
How does that create poverty? If someone owns a house, sells it to SCAD, they take their money and buy another home, right? How does that create poverty? And, if local housing values go up, that is hardly creating poverty, either. In fact, reduces poverty, in that area.
@@Dawggy912 I am well aware of the term. The question is, how does that create poverty? Normally, gentrification improves property and increased values. Quite the opposite of poverty.
A, this is not the worst neighborhood in Savannah. B, this isn't the southside. C, you're kind of being insulting to a historic neighborhood (Cann Park).
Savannahs south side is safe, mid and downtown has lots of crimes compared to other areas specially i think of what they called the dirty 30s streets. We are peaceful here in southside. But compared to other towns and cities savannah is very very peaceful!! Come and visit us.. We love and we welcome tourists here!
@@stephenk.5839 And it will always be like that, we wont be selfish of greeting and smiling to the tourists. Im not originally from here but this place has something that draws you in to stay.
I've live in Southside, midtown and downtown. Southside is everywhere USA - it's fine just nothing unique about it. Midtown is gorgeous and safe loved everything about it. Downtown is a mixed bag but for every bad thing there are 20 great things. I also lived in the "hood" and probably had the best experience there. Cheap rent and and you are so close to everything great. Downtown isn't for families it's for people wanting to live that lifestyle.
I used to live in some of these neighborhoods. Back in the day it was beautiful and peaceful. Alot of the older people kept it up. Alot of them have died. Savannah is beautiful. The whole Savannah doesn't look like this.
Heck, I've visited there when I was a kid and never felt unsafe as I did in certain Atlanta neighbourhoods. There were cops in the 7-11s then and loud music playing in a bar, but I walked from Oglethorpe Mall to my Aunt Zama's House down the road, caught the CAT bus to downtown, and went out to Tybee Beach with my mother, sister, niece,, and college friend and nothing bad happened to us. We even rode past the houses my grandparents used to live in and felt safe.
It’s a sign that people are investing in the transient things of less value (personal property) because they don’t feel it’s worthwhile to invest in more permanent things of greater value (land, home). Think of it also as the cycle every young person goes through as they grow up if they are able to keep their income going up and find a place to settle down : first, you’re interested in status symbols like clothes, car, etc. to show the world you’re doing well. Later, you don’t care about the trappings so much and you’re more interested in making a nice home / nice life for your growing family.
@like allthings you’re saying that when given a chance (predatory lending) someone has access to a loan for more money than they’ve ever seen so of course they are going to go out and spend it all? Yes, that’s what I’m saying, too (minus the predatory lending angle). Poverty hurts, and when you have a chance to break out of it for just a moment, it feels great. The financial hangover afterwards, though, is a b*tch, especially when you realize the car you just bought lost 30% of its value when you drove it away but you still have to pay that money back. Eventually you learn to appreciate things that retain their value. Affording them, though: that’s another problem, as you point out. Many of us live paycheck to paycheck and not everyone has savings or the ability to get a decent loan if disaster strikes.
That wasn’t the south side, That’s the West side of Savannah. As a proud Savannah native our city is a nice place to raise a family. Just mine your business and you be good 😊 We have bad area like any other city and crime. It’s a story behind this city 🏙 it’s what version of it you get… And plenty of southern house hospitality!! He should’ve showed the beautiful part as well.
These just seems like older homes that need some TLC. You also didn’t explain what makes these areas so bad. This is the cleanest “hood” I’ve ever seen... I’m from the East side of St. Louis and live in Denver Savannah is still charming even in the “hood”
You dont understand poor black folks.... There are numerous 6 figure incomes in that neighborhood. It may LOOK poor, but southern blacks care more ab community, family, and neighborhood familiarity than having a big house in an unfamiliar hood with few connections or family members nearby. Your disconnect with how they think in these areas is big. I have lived here my entire life. Go ask them if they would move away from there to an affluent area, but surrounded by strangers.... theyll emphatically tell you No.
This is not the hood. This is the Westside of Savannah. Retired black homeowners stay in this area we don't considered it to be ghetto or hood. I see you rode down my street my parents house is well over 150,000. I went to Beach high school and us Bulldogs are very proud of our area.
That's part of the southern portion of the west side not the south side. South side would be south of either Derenne or Abercorn and Whitebluff. East Savannah by East Broad or Water ave was very run down when I lived there. The Savannah College of Art and Design has caused bad prices for poor people in Savannah. Properties that are worthless have jacked up prices like it was NYC.
I live here and the homeless live under the freeway and in the abandoned homes while the gangs are mostly active during the night when police presence isn't as strong
That’s my neighborhood on the west side of Savannah . Most of the people got federal indictment on gang charges if was the 90’s or 04 he wouldn’t made it through the first street.
The crime here can be bad in places luckily it is isolated in certain neighborhoods like you said. I have lived here most my life and have felt safe. Most of the crime is gang related. Thanks for the video I enjoy your channel.
I’d imagine most gang violence is against other gangs and if you are not involved you are a civilian and they are not interested in harming you and don’t want to.
1st of all the area that he showed was not the South side it was the West side. I would say yes it is the hood but literally nothing happens during the day everything happens at night. Half of the area are elderly couples and the other half are families with children. Literally this area is not the worst.
Lived in Savannah for 3 years in a historical neighborhood to compensate the inability of being back in Italy. What you have shown is not a bad neighborhood at all. There are places much worse than this one and closer to downtown. As others have observed, this particular neighborhood is not close to downtown. I am not saying this gorgeous city doesn't have issues, but let's be truthful.
Thanks to SCAD, the down town area has had a facelift. You have to work with the Historical Society in many places . Still. We are proud of our city. Come visit sometime, we would love to have you. Please no trolling.....
I was born and raised in Savannah Georgia, it will always be home to me. And that neighborhood also. Good people there. I knew most of them that lived there. All cities have crime.
Your neighbourhood looks fine to me, and I have no doubt the people are nice and care for each other, which is probably something you would find in the ‘nicer’ areas where people judge others according to their wealth. Not much neighborly love their.
Savannah is a pretty well kept city and people take pride in their neighborhoods and even the places that is deemed to be the "worst place" is not a bad place to live. There's crime in all cities and no city is exempt but the crime rate in Savannah is very low. But, what you are showing is not slum areas because I have seen worst in many other cities. The reason you don't see a lot of run down house is because the owners are responsible for the upkeep and if they don’t, then the city will demolish the house at their expense.
Karen S.P. I have been saying the exact same thing. We really don't have slums here. The owners have to fix them or be fined and eventually the city will pull the house down if not reparable. Even lawns must be mowed. People are proud here.
What makes a town unsafe? The residents plain and simple. Poverty, in which I grew up in is no excuse for crime! Where does personal responsibility come in? The mothers aren’t teaching their children how to get out of poverty when they get older it seems and if you’re bringing children into the world you can’t support, you probably shouldn’t have a lot of them! Joining gangs only lead to a couple of things, jail or prison and death ☠️
I see detached houses with their own plot of land with paved roads and infrastructure, the neighborhood has electricity, running water, sewage, cable, phone, internet etc. etc. All the amenities of modern life. It is because of the people who live there that cause crime that makes it a bad neighborhood.
Nick I see nothing wrong with the looks of this neighborhood. Most of the houses look fine to me.A lot of people build their houses on bricks because they don’t have basements and if it rains too hard it won’t flood the house. In fact it looks so much better there than In Brunswick which is an hour south on 95 S.
Go to frazier holmes and parts of bacon park u wanna see the worst parts of the c port or go ride around certain parts of east side, the 912 is weird kinda goes from nice to ghetto very fast

Savannah is nothing like it used to be. High Crime was at its peak in the 90’s due to the drugs! I was born and raised in Savannah GA! SCAD brought a lot of property and changed things for the alumni. Even old Elementary School 🏫 I went to they have their own bus 🚎 line. A lot of housing projects have been revamped. I got family there and I still visit. I stay in the Atlanta area now.
I like how you assess the condition of different places. How do you know what to look for and what measures to examine to help you form an opinion about a place? Did you study statistics?

I think every city has a rough side of town with run down houses of alot of black folks living in them areas. I love my city but its the ppl that makes some areas bad.

If he lived there then he probably has a clearer insight on the demographics that live in these areas and let’s be HONEST these areas are 95% more like to be predominantly black for a myriad of reasons. Just because you don’t like something doesn’t make the info false

I moved from Macon, Ga to Savannah, Ga. If this video truly shows the Ghettos of Savannah, Macon's Ghettos are on a whole different plain of insane. Macon has some truly terrifying Ghettos. However I will say, most people living in Macon's Ghettos are actually pretty friendly. So long as you don't appear to be "turfing" and are clearly not representative of a gang... They will be friendly.
Hi Nick. If you didn't inform me that this is a high crime area, I wouldn't know it from looking at it. There are trees, the lawns are well kept, the streets aren't filled with trash, no hoods hang out on the streets, and most houses seem in good condition. But stats matter.

I live in a poorer area in Canada. But people like me are moving in and fixing up their homes. Plus the city has an urban renewal plan so we have new roads, lighting, and parks now. There are also more services to help people out of poverty. It is also an older neighbourhood with streets lined with large elm trees. I've had stuff stolen like some lawn chairs and an extension cord. But it was more affordable to buy a home here. If Savannah has issues with crime and poverty then perhaps they can start to tackle them. I feel like if an area looks crappy then people treat it as such. Even simply painting your house can make people respect their community more. Also getting rid of abandoned buildings and reaching out to risky areas can reduce crime.
Doesn't look any worse than Minneapolis or St. Paul in Minnesota. The houses are older here, but for the most part the properties look well maintained. "Older houses" does not equal "'hood" or "rough". I don't see a whole lot of garbage piled up anywhere, old, rusted, or burned out cars piled up in the yards. A few houses looked condemned, a couple looked like they were being being fixed up. You'll find that most anywhere, even suburbs. I didn't get a sense of it being 'unsafe'. This just looks like a typical working-class neighborhood.
Hmmm. No kidding. I guess I could’ve looked at this yesterday. My tattoo shop I go to is on Bull St. I drove & walked around the neighborhoods between Bull & MLK. I did see a lot of police presence. But I guess I felt it was normal for a city.

How does that create poverty? If someone owns a house, sells it to SCAD, they take their money and buy another home, right? How does that create poverty? And, if local housing values go up, that is hardly creating poverty, either. In fact, reduces poverty, in that area.
@@RogerOnTheRightgentrification
@@Dawggy912 I am well aware of the term. The question is, how does that create poverty? Normally, gentrification improves property and increased values. Quite the opposite of poverty.
@@RogerOnTheRight you are Clueless.
Exactly. What ethic group is getting more and what ethic group is getting less.
A, this is not the worst neighborhood in Savannah. B, this isn't the southside. C, you're kind of being insulting to a historic neighborhood (Cann Park).
I agree. Very insulting
I agree
I remember visiting Savannah many years ago and the people I met really were nice and friendly as you said Dashiki.

There are definitely worse places than that in Savannah.
It looks much better than the worst areas in many towns.
Yes it's all about perspective. Some cites have worse bad areas than others
The timing of this video is insane. I’m on my way to Savannah for the first time in my life, and I’ll get there in a few hours
Go to the river front area it's awesome
I'm a lot late but I hope u didn't believe this dude in the slightest
Heck, I've visited there when I was a kid and never felt unsafe as I did in certain Atlanta neighbourhoods. There were cops in the 7-11s then and loud music playing in a bar, but I walked from Oglethorpe Mall to my Aunt Zama's House down the road, caught the CAT bus to downtown, and went out to Tybee Beach with my mother, sister, niece,, and college friend and nothing bad happened to us. We even rode past the houses my grandparents used to live in and felt safe.
always shocked at how many nice cars are in bad neighborhoods.
Same everywhere, they know how to hustle and work the system.
Me too
It’s a sign that people are investing in the transient things of less value (personal property) because they don’t feel it’s worthwhile to invest in more permanent things of greater value (land, home).
Bling baby bling.
You should go an 11pm cruise too
Right😂
Heck no and you can't see anyways
@@NickJohnson the big action is near the barber shop and liquor store

That wasn’t the south side, That’s the West side of Savannah. As a proud Savannah native our city is a nice place to raise a family. Just mine your business and you be good 😊 We have bad area like any other city and crime. It’s a story behind this city 🏙 it’s what version of it you get… And plenty of southern house hospitality!! He should’ve showed the beautiful part as well.
Thank you! I was like “that’s definitely not the south side”. I was raised on the west. so this video instantly lost me.
@@kiikii1023 First thing I said was this in not the South side and I've been away for a while. SMH!
Frankly, I'm not sure what this guy is talking about. I saw more nice houses than run down ones.
I want to move to new Hampshire because Savannah is a dirty place
These just seems like older homes that need some TLC. You also didn’t explain what makes these areas so bad. This is the cleanest “hood” I’ve ever seen... I’m from the East side of St. Louis and live in Denver Savannah is still charming even in the “hood”
You get it. this is just a normal middle class mostly older black home owner neighborhood
Neighborhood looks nice and clean.
I appreciated your comment. Communication and education is what we ALL need. Thank you.
This is not the hood. This is the Westside of Savannah. Retired black homeowners stay in this area we don't considered it to be ghetto or hood. I see you rode down my street my parents house is well over 150,000. I went to Beach high school and us Bulldogs are very proud of our area.
@@katrinabrabham6757 good for you for speaking up and giving us the truth. Best to you.
Looks like a neighborhood in anytowm usa..no gangs hanging out at the street corners with heroin, and no homeless camps like Seattle WA is now!
This was shot at 10am. All those thugs and drug users are asleep.
I live here and the homeless live under the freeway and in the abandoned homes while the gangs are mostly active during the night when police presence isn't as strong
Its mostly guns now the drugs ain't really went anywhere
That’s my neighborhood on the west side of Savannah . Most of the people got federal indictment on gang charges if was the 90’s or 04 he wouldn’t made it through the first street.
You didn’t even go to the worst places in Savannah, next time try going thru the east side an all the housing projects
Exactly
So stay away from Eastside?

The crime here can be bad in places luckily it is isolated in certain neighborhoods like you said. I have lived here most my life and have felt safe. Most of the crime is gang related. Thanks for the video I enjoy your channel.
Ok!
I’d imagine most gang violence is against other gangs and if you are not involved you are a civilian and they are not interested in harming you and don’t want to.
@@kdegraa correct.
Thanks!
1st of all the area that he showed was not the South side it was the West side. I would say yes it is the hood but literally nothing happens during the day everything happens at night. Half of the area are elderly couples and the other half are families with children. Literally this area is not the worst.
People in the hoods I don't understand why people want to live in the hoods its because they want to play gangsta
I grew up on the south side, so no, definitely not the south side.
Cleaner than most of the rich suburbs in upstate ny
Quit lying. The crime rate is not low at all.
Karen S.P. I have been saying the exact same thing. We really don't have slums here. The owners have to fix them or be fined and eventually the city will pull the house down if not reparable. Even lawns must be mowed. People are proud here.
I’m Italian and I’m really enjoying your videos, they’re Amazing ❤️🇺🇸🇮🇹
Hi Silvia!! How's you find it?
I am from Savannah. It is not a bad neighborhood. It is a mostly black home owner neighborhood.
I'm From Savannah, Still Here. His Information Is Wrong. Lol
He's a proud boy.
Working wages are very low in Savannah. Gentrification has already happened in the areas of town.
With no activity on the street and with no children outside playing, is a indication of crime.
Kids don't play outside anywhere these days
mean cost of a house in this "WORST Hoods" is half a million...
You are correct. We tend to raise our homes off of the ground here to get away from the dampness.
Go to frazier holmes and parts of bacon park u wanna see the worst parts of the c port or go ride around certain parts of east side, the 912 is weird kinda goes from nice to ghetto very fast
*west side i meant. Parts of east side like that too tho

I’m born & raised Savannah Georgia and I Love it forever! I don’t think you should be driving down advertising people house this could have went way left. I used to live on the first street you turned on. 48th street my uncle still does. Just so you know this is the Westside not the Southside. That is a lie, people over there being poor for a 100 years. A lot of us have advanced. Such as myself, a lot of us are also business owners. Don’t assume someone is poor. Some of them even if they have the money to move they still won’t. Why don’t you go out to the hole or Garden City and get out and walk with your camera instead of driving.
This is an awful video. I live in this neighborhood and my house is in your video. I’m thoroughly disgusted by your characterization. The people in these communities are hard working folks without the privilege that you are basing your views on.

I live in savannah. The areas he are showing are really not the bad side of town. Savannah may have the bad parts but its not the worst place to come or live. I think every city has a rough side of town with run down houses of alot of black folks living in them areas. I love my city but its the ppl that makes some areas bad.
@like allthings you’re acting like it’s not possible that these “rundown” areas can’t be predominantly black? If he lived there then he probably has a clearer insight on the demographics that live in these areas and let’s be HONEST these areas are 95% more like to be predominantly black for a myriad of reasons. Just because you don’t like something doesn’t make the info false

Some of these places would be interesting to see at night.
You've shown worse Nick. A lot of the homes just need some love and care.
This is not the hood !
It's the sulfur smell of the paper mill....maybe it makes the residents lose their minds.🤔

Hi Nick. If you didn't inform me that this is a high crime area, I wouldn't know it from looking at it. There are trees, the lawns are well kept, the streets aren't filled with trash, no hoods hang out on the streets, and most houses seem in good condition. But stats matter.

Go to the State Streets. That's gotta be Savannah's roughest area.
Used to be but now those homes are being flipped and gentrified. I always thought of it as not a good neighborhood but its changing.
Every mlk jr street in Anerica is crime filled...why ? Hmm thoughts?
It such a nice and decent neighborhood drive. However, the fact that its a hurricane-prone area, I dont think I'll ever want to move there.
This neighborhood in Savannah isn't "worst" at all. I've seen worst in other cities.
Because my neighborhood got indictment came a few years ago most of the street legends got booked doing long bids in the feds
Definitely not the south side!!!smh
Generational poverty on point
It doesn't look too bad. Well kept and not trashy or hoody.
Try showing the street name as we remember our lives there, love my beautiful city
I wonder what the average distance from the worst part of any given town is from it's MLK Boulevard/Avenue?
Close I'd say
I live there and I’m too scared to go to certain places but for most of Savannah it’s pretty nice
