Nice tutorial/exercise... and you proved my point by choosing your favourite picture! You choose the most traditional looking one, those filters are IMO just an Instagram nonsense trend, they have a place in filming, as for stills use them once every two years, otherwise they are just boring, and as you proved framing, model posing skills/photographer directing skills, creating/setting a mood, are far more important...
I look at them a bit like the lensbaby, which I actually prefer for creating flares and crazy bokeh, $400 dollars isn’t a bargain at all, $50 is the real value for a photographer, different story for a film maker, the lensbaby is about the same price, maybe a bit more if you get the full accessory package, and again not worth it IMO, but I got mine second hand, with all the trimmings for $50 and in this way it was worth every penny.
What I have done in the past is to use a $5 UV filter and smear Vaseline on it, intentionally drop it the give it a few cracks, jam pieces of broken glass between 2 of them or some water mixed with glicerine, stretch an old thorn silk tight... all old school DIY methods, very cheap and every time you get an unique effect....
Keep on the good work and refreshing approach 👍👍👍

      E-XAC-TLY!
You've summed it all up. First of all, all these effects can be recreated handmade with a few tricks. Like most professional tools, what you buy with these filters is time and efficiency, which is not necessarily interesting for an amateur.
And like all flashy effects of this type, use them too often and they get boring and too much. Look, even on a photoshoot made just to test these filters, I couldn't help myself to take pictures without them because it was starting to look too much!
All the effects, all the "10 photo hacks", all the transitions and zoom effects that you see on videos are the little cherry on top of your cake; the problem with trends is that people turn it into the cake itself, to the point of nausea.
These filters are interesting for video, especially in music, where you're looking for that eccentricity, that flashy side; for a travel video for example, I wouldn't put more than 5/6 shots with flare effects at the risk of becoming boring.
Use them for photo/video? oh yes! These effects are really cool. But it's all in the dosage.
Thanks Nilo, I love reading your comments, they're always super relevant and argued!

    Hi Nicholas,
Great video! Loved how some of those shots came out. I can't seem to find the second filter you're using anywhere, any chance you could confirm exactly what it is? (you mentioned you think it's the the stardust filter, but I can't find that unfortunately.)

Hi James! The one with little glass sparks on it? Yes, it's called the Stardust Filter. I wanted to share the link here, but I can't find this filter on their website anymore... You should contact them to know if they still produce it. It's a shame, it was one of the coolest one... I can't imagine that they don't do it anymore.😶
