It was a tragic accident and it's horrible watching any part of the poor old XPT fleet go to scrap. I hope railway preservation groups have been saving their pennies to buy these XPT sets when they are all decommissioned next year. Id like to see one assembled as an all sleeper train with a proper dining car for long distance railway tours.
I've heard of a few talks here and there about some possibilities of preserving a full train in the future BUT for the time being, take this message with a grain a salt and hope for the best.
Fact... XL2229 has been involved in a derailment in Victoria before Wallan on the 11th of July 2014 and it was ST24 at North Melbourne Flyover Near Southern Cross and XP2018 was leading too
The XPT fleet is due to be replaced by Spanish DMUs (or DEMUs) based on CAF designs in 2026 unfortunately (originally 2023). As far as i know they will not feature Sleeper accommodation which is crazy imo (in that case the train will no longer be an alternative to flying).
Why store a carriage at a site that's impossible to easily drive it out. And surely moving it by freight train would be safer. What a weird country we are. If there's a more difficult way of doing something we seem to find it.
@@tyot8157 they deliver new ones by rail F Knuckle. And they deliver far more dangerous things by rail. Jesus if inthe USA they can transport tanks I'm sure we can dig up flatbed rail trucks and strap them down on that. And as for damaged? They are damaged and being taken on a road. Oh and generally most scrap yards are in industrial areas often near rail lines.

I hope they preserve a train (2 locos and 5 or 6 carriages) and use it for special services.

There's a few spare sets just sitting around. More than enough coaches and locomotives are laying around.
According to the Sydney Morning Herald the new trains are delayed for 3 years which is great news for us XPT lovers.
Fix ?
Nope.

Safer to take damaged carriages by rail lol your funny
Also taking carriages to a scrapyard via a freight train is “more difficult way” in your own terms
