      i think you should speak with dr john campbell from england, he has a doctorate in nursing i believe. this is his channel: ua-cam.com/users/Campbellteachingvideos
      He has created educational content for nurses that is used in Africa to provide medical knowledge to remote communities, and train volunteers. As well as this, Dr. Campbell shares data and analyses trends in the current medical climate.
      I highly recommend you consider him as a guest for a future episode.

But to me, and I only speak for myself, but I don’t get offended when somebody I play with say something is “autistic af”, but if they Call me autistic Then I remind them that I actually am and they become more aware and super gentle. Even the gamertag AutisticFury made me Roll on the floor laughing in that RoE tournament. Sometimes when I spend a lot of time on a strategy and it works out for a sweeping victory in Squad Then I also imagine it as the enemies feeling the autistic fury of a asperger gamer while his chances of winning diminishes every second. Call me what you want. The results speak for themselves. - but please still respect people that get offended. Because autists cant handle pressure all the time so argueing with different people every Day about the word is literally impossible. So if they ever find strength to ask you to stop Then respect it. Somebody who wishes to offend or express hate through the use of a word will not be deterred from doing so by the fact that the word is rarely uttered in conversation. If anything, quite the opposite.
    Making the very utterance of a word taboo only makes it more powerful when used to express hatred.
    If you tell someone that simply saying a word is the equivalent of doing violence, then you have provided them with a weapon with which to do violence when it is their goal to do so.

      Similiar to that strange viral outburst several years ago about the ok symbol 👌being a symbol of hate and in support of white supremacy and the attempt to make it taboo and ban it. All your doing is giving ammo to white supremacists and racists who will now happily use a symbol that meant nothing even remotely offensive before as a way to offend and attack.
      On the other hand, like with Lex's point, removing the normalisation of words or actions that are already offensive removes the use of those words from figures and people that the target group being offended may look up to or associate with, which is arguably much worse to hear these things said from those you consider allies than people you dislike/hate you already. Also, those who are hateful of those groups will find a way to show or spread their hatred without the use of single taboo words anyway. It doesn't make too much difference to the hateful, but makes a huge difference when those you look up to don't use it.

By putting rules on words when their use isn't intended, doesn't have the intent of being maliciously or derogatorily used - it causes friction. I shouldn't have to have hesitancy by simply stating a word - like if I was to say that the "n-word" stands for nigger; is it only appropriate for me to say if I'm singing a song that uses the word? People see the word and are reactive emotionally, rather than responsive to analyze and understand the context and intent. Yes, we have to be careful to not step on toes of those who will be hypersensitive - reactive and perhaps even to a dangerous level - of those who misinterpret or can't interpret and discern word use to understand context and intent. It's also an outdated word IMHO, and I like Morgan Freeman's take the most - "you stop calling me a black man, and I'll stop calling you a white man" - which then means making any words referencing race obsolete; I wonder if Google will flag my use of the word, and block this comment - which is problematic as well - especially for what if I was a black man who was using it, why should Google be suppressing acceptable language use? In Germany nobody is allowed to glorify the Nazis and their symbols - not even Jewish people. Everybody get the same legal treatment if he does. • @Misclaneous
      @Misclaneous Рік тому +1

      Agreed, but let's not make it too simplistic. Has Destiny ever used the word from a position of hate? Clearly not I think. That's important. But he himself has changed his stance on it anyway, so there is clearly something worth looking at here.
      Firstly, context is a two-way street. I may be able to perfectly articulate my ideas in French, but I try to deliver that to an English audience, its going to be poor communication. An audience should have empathy for a speaker's intentions, but a good public speaker must also have empathy for his audience's context. That includes understanding how these words may be recieved by some, even if not delivered with malice.
      Secondly, what is the context of Destiny using the n word, vs avoiding it? There's a lot to be said on the matter, its definitely not as simple as "That's really all that needs to be said...". Just as one example, a willingness to take heat and be accused of virtue signalling by conspicuously avoid the word, compared to potentially alienating some black audience members by using it. That already says something.
      Full context is not just the speaker's intention. It's the speaker's intention and thoughtfulness. And the same for the audience. And both exist within wider societal norms and assumptions. Simplifying it to the speaker's intention only is reductive.

    • @stormeth1313
      @stormeth1313 Рік тому +5

      @@Misclaneous You assume that my idea of context is one dimensional, it's not, I don't think it was for Carlin, nor is it for a majority of people who take this stance. What you went out of your way to describe in those paragraphs very eloquently- is as you put it, context... And what I said was- Context is what matters, as simple as that.
      It's easier to get muddled down in what we both mean when we say Context, than perhaps it is to acknowledge that my initial point- the Words themselves don't matter, that no word is by itself harmful- its the person using it and why they're using it- could be true, but it's an easy enough point to agree on unless you're trying to say words are harmful in and of themselves?

Hell even if someone does take it the wrong way, you bring it up and you let each other know there isn't any actual malice. this whole idea is just divisive, in reality when you have people in your life, the relationship you have with them should be able to survive a word without context.
      This whole conversation in my opinion is disingenuous, the idea of language being the same with strangers and friends is venomous. The reason we have complete freedon of speech is because the nature of speech is subjective, words and meanings change all the time but if you couple in slang, sarcasm, and other ways to convey meaning it can all get quite convoluted. So naming any one word are too bad to say is dangerous, because what stops other words from becoming "too bad?" Language is an incredibly complex subject. On the face of it, words are nothing more than an arrangement of what are essentially symbols. These are then transposed into what become established as letters creating the foundations of a language. When arranged to make a word, on paper they are two dimensional both in their form and sound.
    When people learn language either as their native tongue or foreign, words take on a new life in the form of sentences, paragraphs and books.
    However, what is often overlooked is their three dimensional nature. Firstly, they have a meaning as assigned by linguists into dictionaries. Then certain words are adopted into the lexicon of individuals, groups and communities, irrespective of size. Words also have an origin story, a history of usage and it’s socially accepted meaning and appropriateness of that time.
    I agree wholeheartedly with Lex about the use of particular words which cause pain to specific groups, namely the two words that were discussed. However, I do believe not as an issue of free speech but in the interests of understanding, educating and making effective arguments about said words, they should be allowed to be spoken in that context.
    Throughout the conversation, just hearing the ‘N’ or ‘R’ letter as a reference to the actual words avoids delving deeper into why they’re so offensive. Words evoke emotion, it’s inherent in their history, usage and meaning. How we use said words, to whom what, where, when and why is critical in a conversation like this. You need to be able to demonstrate through use of those words in various examples and their context as to why they cause offence.
    In a respectful, exploratory and educational discussion like this, you have to be able to say the actual word as opposed to a letter such ‘R’. Whilst Lex’s politeness at using ‘R’ (as opposed to the word itself) to argue his point is admirable, I believe it fails in its effectiveness and impact to help Destiny understand why his use of it is inappropriate.
    We must not be afraid to use words to even illustrate points. From my experience, hearing the word out loud, used directly and illustrated further by variables such as volume, intonation, speed and ‘the way’ it is said would have been more effective in this conversation than using just ‘R’ or ‘N’.

      You lost me the last 3 or 4 paragraphs. Saying retard wouldn’t illustrate a point or impact someone that already knows that line of argumentation and is already commonly using it. You say yourself words invoke emotion, and there is an inherent history usage and meaning, even on the a micro scale words can be used to express a negative, and thats okay.
      Is there an inherent morality to someone that refuses to use those words publicly? Not at all. Does everyone afflicted with a negative trait or a part of a marginalized group take offense to these words? Not at all. Its it okay to not care about someone that does not understand the context or irony? Absolutely.
      As someone with down syndrome probably wouldn’t like retard if they understood it, someone with a small penis wouldn’t maybe enjoy those insults, anyone with any trait that isn’t the norm could be hurt by that trait used as a negative, is this the ideal world? The discussion on "NPC" really bought to the fore what I think Destiny's purpose with these words actually is. I think that this is true for everyone: that we often use a colourful insult where we fail to communicate. Where we cannot seem to get through to someone in _our_ communication game (with Destiny it's probably his fact-centric approach), I think we want to try and situate our interlocutor into as universal a narrative that we can muster in a desperate attempt to force a degree of understanding from them, even if it's just associational. Words that are universally sour serve to do just this. Destiny may be in a conversation with a particularly obstinate woman with a mental illness and a predilection towards saying things whose consequences she hasn't thought about, for example. In this case, Destiny may think something like: "well, I cannot irk out a single concession from her; she seems not to be engaged in the conversation with the level of good-faith I need from her for this to work. Calling her 'retarded' might serve to alert her to how she appears to me, since the level of the conversation is so juvenile, this might be the only thing left for me to do." I think it's still a mistake, not for just aesthetic reasons though. We could probably see the same thought process in an 'unhappily' married couple. The reason it's wrong is because it never works.

This idea that negative arguments that go sideways in the worst ways possible don't lead anywhere or change opinion isn't correct. Especially in the internet era because those people disappear almost instantly but the ideas remain. Even if it does increase the proclivity of a verboten word, it is preposterous that there is a double standard for these words. Free speech is essential for a democracy, and HATRED is inherent in human nature. As JBP says, you don't have a right to not be offended, you have a right to be offensive. Yes there are social repercussions for that, but such is life. Lex is speaking as an ideologue, not a realist.

    I didn't expect Lex to take such a strong few on this. It is interesting how our vocabulary is changing. When I was a teenager me and my friends would use all the slurs very casually, xbox live back in the day used to have some really nasty stuff on there. We never really used them in a nasty way it was more just trying to out do each other. I think the most common one was calling everything gay. Exam next week? oh thats gay. Out of chips at the canteen? thats gay. It really meant nothing but we used it all the time. I then came out as Bi, and if I think back I don't think I ever really minded but then again I know others who said it did upset them, and perhaps it upset me subconsciously. I think it is inevitable that in the future even saying you idiot might be seen as bad. I guess its a move in the right direction, however it is frustrating having to change something that you have been doing for a long time, especially when the benefits are quite hard to see.

      The primary change in society has nothing to do with individual words, which is why the list of “banned” words is constantly growing and evolving. The societal changes is all based around the idea that words = physical harm. So now we have to deconstruct each word to make sure it’s pure enough in origin, meaning, and evolution to be accepted into the modern lexicon.

    Internet culture has shifted the "R" word in such a way that it is synonymous with calling a non mentally disabled person "dumb." Way more often than not, the "R" word is used towards people who aren't mentally disabled or neuro divergent. Thus the original intention or use of the "R" word is not being used in the derogatory way that it was created for.

    10:36 Hang on a minute... The word "moron" was the term for mentally disabled people before the word "retarded" became the term. That being said, don't you think we're overthinking this word policing to some extent? It's like watching the human race (in America specifically) who used to have better things to do than harp on what words you can use endlessly chase their fucking tail. I personally value free speech (even if it's not nice or something I don't agree with) more than anyone's feelings and believe it or not, I'm a liberal. If the use of any word makes you think of the person who used it as less of an intellectual simply for using the word regardless of context, THAT makes me think of YOU as less of an intellectual. I'm supposed to care about how my use of specific language makes you feel but you don't have to care about how your attempt to force censorship on others based on what is literally your feelings and assumptions makes them feel. If you can't see how that's both hypocritical and in a sense "society chasing it's tail" about something that isn't as important as what it's being made out to be thanks to social media, then I don't know what else to tell you other than "bye". To be fair, I understand the concept of collateral when it comes to certain word use but there's also responsible use where there is little to no collateral to using those words so I'm not shutting out "the other side of the coin" in terms of what I just said, but what I just said is the side of the coin that far too few people have even seemingly looked at or factored into their own thought process on this topic. JMO. I could expand so much on this but I'm not trying to write a book here. Last thing I'll say is this: I won't read comments to this post so don't waste your time unless you have plenty of it to burn and nothing better to do because I definitely have better things to do. Sorry, not sorry.✌

    Btw, I'm mixed half black and half-white which makes me black in America (cause I'm impure everyone defaults to thinking I'm black despite the fact I'm equally white). Been called the N-Word MANY times. The thing is it allows white people to always have this social upperhand...they can default to the N-word and always let you know you're inferior. I have a doctoral degree..doesn't matter some guy at Walmart can prove his superiority anytime he chooses.
    That said, talking ABOUT the word should be completely fine. Like an intellectual context or as he said in a move context of course its fine. The idea of a magic word no one can ever say is stupid to me.
