    My parents had a chow chow when I was born. Originally owned by my maternal grandparents, Murphy adopted my dad when he started dating my mother, so that when my parents got married, Murphy ended up joining them. Murphy loved my dad, and tolerated my mother. When I was born, Murphy ended up thinking that I was his child, and would not often let other people approach me that he did not know. When I started crying, he would go with my mother to check on me.
    By all accounts, Murphy was a good dog.

    Our chow Copper is identical to the black one at 3:46. She is 14.5 years old, has cataracts, going deaf and has arthritis. Even though, she still loves life, her walks, rumbling with her much larger sister Quashie, treats, etc... She uses a ramp to get in/out of my truck & loves going on rides. Our Copper has taught us so much about giving & receiving love. It will definitely hurt when her time comes. My family & I are blessed to have had her for the past 14.5 years..

      My husband and I have had 12 Chows 2 at a time always males we have found them to be loyal, loving, faithful to both of us. More towards me as I was the Alfia I trained them all right from day one 8 weeks old. Very easy to train. Very treat motivated. And each one had their own PERSONALITY. COULD BE STUBBORN IF YOU LET THEM BUT WHEN YOU SHOWED THEM YOU WERE THE BOSS THEY DID WHAT THEY WERE TOLD. sometimes in their time but it got done.😉. They are one breed that love to travel with us. We went across Canada and on many camping trips with our Chows over the many years we had them and yes they had there pictures taken by umpteen people we lost count . No matter where we were even just out for a stroll someone would ask if they could have their picture taken with our dogs. There was only one time our huge brute he weighed 120lbs gave warning and we had to say no to the gentleman there was NO way he was going to let him near him so he had to be content to a picture of me and my CHOW. TAI CHI was his name and he was the biggest of my boys . We now have our 9 yr. Old female the last and only female of Chows #13 she is by far the most intelligent of all of them ,and the most vocal. She let's us know what she wants vocally. Wakes us every morning and we swear she has a clock in her head . Food times snack times walk times outside times not comming in the house times, bring me in now times LOL stranger coming up the drive. And which one of my grown kids is home for a visit we know by her bark. They all have dogs and I'm surprised she gets along with all of them and when she wants her time alone each of them know to leave her alone. Female power over 4 males. Wow, it's amazing to watch. One thing I do know is she does not tolerate female dogs PERIOD. So anyone with a female dog that wants to bring it to our home we have respectfully had to ask them to leave them home or lock them in our back room if they do bring them or leave them outside. Sad but that's how it has to be. Chows are the love and the light of our lives it will be very hard to let this sweet girl go.😢😢

    Hii, I'm a first-time furmom. And without second thought, got in love with chows, and ended up buying one. And as a first timer, how do I stop him from play bites whenever he's too happy? 'cause it leaves a wound sometimes. Helpppp

    • @dogjoy1
      @dogjoy1  15 днів тому

      First off, congratulations because Chows are so amazing! We can’t wait to hear about all the stories you will have!
      Secondly, yes, play bites are not good and it’s important to squash that behavior as early as possible.
      When a play bite happens, make sure to let out an audible “ouch!” And then immediately turn your back to them and walk away. If you do this repetitively they will eventually learn that play time stops when they bite.
      Let us know how that goes but make sure to stay persistent and consistent with it and you should be good. 🫶

    My younger sister has one - their temperament resembles a cat more than a dog, though they are far more fearless - very aloof dogs if you are not regularly around them, and fiercely loyal to their owners - you must be aware of their thick fur in the summer as they tend to overheat, and make sure they are groomed regularly at that time

    I have a mixed breed dog that... after his DNA being done.. he as 17% Chow Chow. That is only next to his 25% Pit. I can sense the Chow in him. His aloofness, ease of training, alerting us as well. He is also very "cat like" with his one toy (no squeaker) that is a squirrel. The way he plays with it is interesting.

    "A serious and attractive breed that does not enjoy excessive attention"
    Hoo boy my boy Mochi would disagree with that! He's a total social butterfly, he loves it when people come up to pet him (although he gets a little uneasy if men loom over him, I try to tell them to let him come to them and not lean over him) and he loves being hugged. A lot of the things people told me about chows (being stubborn, aloof, not getting along with others, ect) have not been true of him at all.

      @@dogjoy1 He is an absolute lovebug and people always come up to him in parks or on walks, I'm very glad I worked on desensitizing him to people coming up suddenly - especially kids, they love to just run up and fling themselves on him without warning. I actually found out that he can sense and responds to a medical condition I have that sometimes causes me to lose consciousness, so I'm trying to get funding somehow to have him service trained.

He's in training right now for his canine good citizen and public access so he can legally be my service dog (he already senses and responds to a medical condition I have that causes me to lose balance, fall or lose consciousness sometimes) and has been doing amazing, but we have hit somewhat of a snag - He has bilateral entropion, the condition apparently common to chows according to my vet where the eyelids roll inward and his eyelashes rub against the eye itself, which could cause blindness along with just being very uncomfortable. He has an appointment with an ophthalmologist, but I have no idea how I'm going to afford it. I have to, though. He's my baby.
