    Important interview. Imho an honest analysis that strongly reinforces the messages that the watch collecting social media , including Tim , have been informing us of for years. Buy what you enjoy is most important. Lean towards high quality and good value and dont expect a watch to be an investment. Its a hobby for enthusiasts - not economists. Many thanks.

    It was nice to hear and see the legend himself again after him being semi retired. I went trough the same stages as him and lots of others. High horology is nice but a Rolex is just part of your life...

    I loved the honesty in this video. Something a lot of people refuse to accept is that in a very modern future, the Rolex watches that are worth a fortune now , 'might' not be very valuable at all. Fashion can be fickle, and no one knows for certain what will be popular in the future.

      Yeah, but u have to remember a lot of these collectors have inherited wealth and rich patrimony, AND bought these watches when they were still within reach of the middle class...

    • @Jack-is9sm
      @Jack-is9sm 4 роки тому +1

      @@redatticus7606 One person who didn't inherit his wealth, someone who has purchased loads of watches. Not really a watch collector, but 'Roman Sharf'.
      There are loads of other people who have got into collecting watches, and for no 'investment' reason, and don't come from wealthy families. That includes me. I am a self made person, I have a big watch collection. With some extremely valuable watches , and I love my Hamilton Khaki Pilot poineer, a era correct 33mm military watch, I recently purchased, just as much as my 'feet first' Red label Vintage Submariner. I get good deals from Authorised Dealers too, no grey market with my new watches. Obviously this doesn't include Rolex Stainless steel professional sports models. Luckily I got my Rolex watches before this crazy current situation.
      I love all my watches, and I really don't care what they may be worth in the future. My children will be looked after, but I will encourage them to keep my watch collection between them. Having said that, I am also completely fine if they prefer to sell my collection. I think there are plenty of watch collectors who do it because they love watches and the value is irrelevant. I personally don't judge my watches as investments, just something I enjoy collecting.

    I love James Dowling from my time on Timezone, almost 20 years ago. I had to chuckle when he mentioned that article "The progression of a Rolex Owner", which I read many, many years ago, and had forgotten about it. But it very much mirrors my own experience (minus the Omega stage). Started with a couple of Oris, then a Panerai, then a Rolex 16570, then went (heavily) into Rolex vintage, then JLC / IWC. Eventually got a Lange, which I love, but only wear it in special occasions. The rest of the time, I wear my latest Datejust and just forget about it.

    For me, the love of watches is what makes the real collector, regardless of the piece's market value, and the gentleman's line of thought reflects just that.
    The inherent value of an object depends on the subject and not the way it is previewed by others. That is the market value, and ie like the stock exchange, it will vary through time and can suffer all sorts of manipulation, like we see today with all the click-bait post in social media with the word Rolex, or not...
    Thank you for keeping us informed Tim, once again. Cheers

    Im surprised to see that even James hasn't figured out a highly likely cause of this SS craze is watchfinder. They unrealistically boosted the price to increase there margins and gave the impression that "because this watch is double it's retail on this website, I need to do everything I can to get one at retail". I don't think anybody takes watchfinders influence that seriously but I work in the trade and it's literally everybody's reference point for second hand pricing now. Giving the impression that these pieces were a lot more sought after than they initially were has now actually created ridiculous demand.

I 'think' the crown and face are original , but I still think Vintage Rolex is a minefield. Also who is the expert? There are so many in the business. John Mayor originallly tried to sue Bob Maron for selling him vintage Rolex watches with 'spare parts' in them, he eventually withdrew his lawsuit. So it must be virtually impossible to prove.

    Great interview and content, but it’s difficult to give sincerity to someone wearing goofy green sunglasses on their head like a six year old.

    James Dowling self proclaimed old git wearing red socks and electric blue suede loafers and Tim young dude reciprocates with millenial cool of wearing green neon shades upside down indoors on his head. classic 😉

    James Dowling’s great - no pretense at all! I really like Rolex for the abuse the abuse they manage. I would never subject my little Calatrava to any of that.
