I bought a small curtain rod, about 2 foot length, mounted it to the wall above my cutting table. Then added shower curtin rod rings that have a "s" type shape, and hang my rulers from them, by puttng the rulers on each ring through the hole that's at the top of the rulers. I can overlap the rulers, and the hooks slide along the rod for easy selection, I just love this method, and they are so easy to find the ruler I need at the time I am cuting my fabric.
I repurposed my many popcorn buckets from Disney as table trash collectors. They are at all my stations and using them all the time means seeing my souvenirs.
After Valentine’s Day was over, I happened to go into the local Aldi store and they had this big red box that they had been selling valentine cards in. Was mostly empty and the little square pockets were the perfect size for fat quarters or 5 inch squares. It was a pretty red color and shiny. Abt 3’ wide & 3’ tall & abt 5.5-6” deep. And I know they just recycle all their boxes; so I asked if I could have it, and they said that I could! I’ve seen similar display boxes for greeting cards for other holidays since, in other colors! 😊
Update: I went in on 5/31/23 and noticed 2 of these boxes on display: a pretty light blue color with Mother’s Day cards and a light gray color with grad cards. These are the display boxes with the “Pop-Up cards.” So the bigger squares are abt 6” tall, 4 in a row; where they display the card in it’s popped-up state; and underneath each one of those is a square abt 2” tall, where they stack the folded cards. I think there are three rows of the large squares, and three rows of the smaller ones. Figure out what color matches your sewing room; then visit regularly to see when the cards are nearly gone or the holiday is passed; then ask if you can have the display box! 😁
I've been shopping Harbor Freight for the last 10 years, not only is it economically efficient, it's fun. One of my favorite stores is any hardware, especially if it has it's own lumber yard. It smells so wonderful.
I just took an empty Dawn Power Wash spray bottle, cleaned it totally out and use it as a fine mister for water when ironing. Works great, I also have a continuous mist bottle of Febreze and as soon as it is empty I will recycle it for water. Love to recycle. Love your video's.
This is a great video! I use a lot of cardboard boxes for my quilt room. One year I did buy Lori Holt's planner, but this year I just couldn't bring myself to pay the price for it. I would much rather buy fabric. LOL You know, as quilters do. 😁
Thank you for sharing your organization ideas. I love my magnetic bowl from harbor feight. I use old tin boxes as drawer organizers. They hold up. They stay out of landfills
I am currently sewing boxes to fit the shelves of some Ikea Billy bookcases. I was going to stitch out the decorative stitches built into my sewing machine, so have used these on the box sides. I love the magnetic tool holders. I have them screwed under a shelf above my machine so I can grab scissors easily. I use a magnetic whiteboard under my cutting mat so that I can use the a little shapes magnets to hold down pattern pieces, so much easier and quicker than pins.
Thank you so much for the cost effective idea’s! In our day and time these are becoming a must, as well as very intelligent way of conserving what we have! It is not always out the latest craze, it is now about how we can do more with less. You are so kind and thoughtful! Thank you dearly.
Good morning. I always try to shop my home before I purchase storage. That being said, I had to chuckle when you showed the Kleenex box. I have one that I modpodged with pretty fabric sitting next to my sewing machine.
I use a Silverware, divider basket for my rotary cutters, pencils, smaller, rulers, etc. They are used for picnics and come in either baskets or wooden boxes where the silverware stands up. It takes up very little space on my cutting table.
For fat quarters I sort by colour and store them in the spinach plastic containers. They stack, can hold around 12 to 15 fat quarters and fit in the ikea kallax cube, I get four to a cube.
@@suzannakoizumi8605 when we buy bulk spinach at Costco or Sam’s club the spinach comes in a plastic recycle container. It is rectangular about six inches wide, six inches high and ten inches in length
I'm so happy to see your channel growing. I love to repurpose items instead of throwing them away. The kleenex box is genius, why didn't I think of that. I'm guessing that the magnetic strip from Harbor freight can be painted. I need one of those. Thank you for the great tips!
I love a notebook. Anything stationary related, actually. To make the basic ones more “quilty”…. We all have an orphan block here or there. Maybe you did the adorable 3” version of the sewcialites (spelling?) and wouldn’t they look absolutely AdOrAbLe sewn together to make a cover!! Oh my. I think I found my next project! 😅
I am a gadget person. Love gadgets. Sure I can go cheaper or use something to make it work that cost nothing. I do both. I think personally if it makes you feel happy to purchase a few toys for yourself it is okay. A lot of times we spend on other family members, and we pass on ourselves. Because we can make things that work out of nothing. But I also feel it is important if we are able to treat ourselves once in awhile to something not DIY that is nice too. Either way. I am for doing what you can afford to purchase and have fun. Entertain yourself for a change. I love your channel.
I use a ceramic pot for plants for my cutting/sewing table trash, they come in all sizes, colors, patterns and you can find them everywhere, and any any price point.
I recently used command hooks to hang my rulers on the wall next to my cutting area. Best thing I have ever done. So easy to grab and out back my rulers
I use those magnetic strips all over the place. On my longarm to secure the floated quilt top (I covered them with a fabric sleeve with a loop on the end to make it easily moved/removed.) Above my cutting mat to hold rotary cutters. Under the window ledge in front of my sewing machine (I did check to make sure the potential to magnetize my bobbins was not a problem-been up over a year with no effect.) I gave up on notebooks-spent too much time either looking for them or looking for info in them; yes my studio is often chaotic. Now I use Excel-it’s always right there on my computer and is searchable. I cover those small boxes and box tops with scraps of fabric, all size and shape of scraps; use regular Elmer’s glue, not school glue, then ModPodge the whole thing to make a fairly permanent item.
A lot of videos recommend hanging rulers on the wall. I took it a step further and hung a lid holder (like you would hang on the inside of a cabinet door). Holds all but the smallest rulers and I don't have to take other rulers down to get to the one I want. Depending on where you buy it, fairly inexpensive.
Funny - I have the blue bitty buddy thing that I also think is too tall/big and as an alternative I use old Kleenex boxes - they’re the perfect size. Like minds…. I used double-sided tape to stick a little owl pincushion inside my harbor freight magnetic bowl, and use the rest of the bowl part to corral used pins, wonder clips, presser feet, etc Thanks for another fun video
I love the Exceed hardback notebooks from Walmart. They come in four sizes (letter, A5, slim A5, and A6). The paper takes marker really well with no bleed through (good for color coding those blocks!) And, if you want to dress it up, glue some scraps or orphan blocks to the front!
We al love you!! Great idas. I have seen the divided plate at my $1.25 store. We all believe that if we buy more organization, we will be organized. I try to use sticky notes for little notes. They don't fall off my tables as easily. But I try to put them in my notebooks to control them.
For keeping bits & bobs in my sewing room organized and out of my way, I use one of the sets of drawers for screws. You can find them at a hardware store. They aren’t pretty but with anywhere from 12 to 32 drawers, it allows for separation of things in a small space.
I used a small one (12 drawers) to hold my sets of alphabetizes by color sets and also put number sets by color in their own separate drawer. I use a small wooden bowl to catch all my threads. A scrapbook cup holder with a 2 bags attatched one for garbage and one for scraps and my drink it attatches by hanging off the table so it takes no space from my table. I use a pencil turn about that has 3 cup like that spin to hold the tools one for cutting tools (scissors, seam ripper,) tool (seam roller, long tweezers, magnetic expandable pin picker upper and stellito) the last cup holder has my other tools (pencil, pen marking erasable pen) all that is next to my sewing machine with minimal table space. I use a metal open container with 3 compartments that hold my clips, quilting safety pins and a small clipboard with notebook in the last compartment on my cutting station.
Just found your channel today with the HF video. You seem so fun and I’m enjoying going through your videos. I’m a new quilter so I can use all the advice I can get! :) thank you!
I use and recycle the plastic square containers that mushrooms come in from the grocery store. I also have a turn-about that I use for scissors, pencils/pens, my seam roller (from Lori Holt), small fabric glue bottles, etc. everything is confined to one small area.
You can also use cascade dish pod container they come with lid and short and tall as do Tide pod containers and they hold all kinds of stuff and your hands fit in the flap easi ly
For the plain notebooks, there are a bunch of videos for making cute fabric covers that slip over the front and back cardboard covers. You can use orphan blocks or string blocks, or your favorite fabric. It would work on any size spiral bound or composition notebooks. (And you can choose between lines or graph paper, and who doesn’t love graph paper?! 😄)

Find someone who makes pet beds for rescue… I keep all the bits from cutting fabric to thread cut offs and give them for rescue (saving landfill space!)
I do make pet beds for our local shelter; however, I do not save my scrap threads. I just thought it would be a huge mess for the owner if the dog tore the bed open. It is an option though.
Mary, I bought that for $3 at an antique store and I love it!! I simply covered it with the plastic bags that some of my purchases from Fat Quarter Shop have come in over the years. For some silly reason, I save those bags and cut them in half to help protect my thread. It is so dusty here, especially this year!!! We are having a major dust store as I type!!!
I was wondering the same thing & was thinking, I need to make a vinyl cover to place over my thread that hangs inside my cabinet door too because of the dust that accumulates.
My favourite quilt tool is a fat rubber band. I put one on each of my long rulers, which prevents the ruler from moving when cutting. LOVE them!
This is such a great tip!!! Thank you for sharing!!!
