I was in Chicago when they performed (aug. 78). I was 16. I begged and threaten my parents that I would flunk out of college if they didn't let me go. They did. I am funkadelic surgeon (ER) today!!!

    The History of Knee Deep:
To all you Funksters out there, here's the history of this incredible song.....
in the late-70s, Disco was dominating the charts. Donna Summer, the BeeGees and KC and the Sunshine Band were all in heavy rotation on the radio. Acts like Cameo and other R&B/Funk acts were doing okay but only in the Black community.
So, James Brown attempted a comeback in 1976 with Get Up Offa That Thing, which was meant to challenge Disco and restore Funk and R&B back to the head of the industry.
Acts such as Brick, Con Funk Shun, the Isley Brothers and others were dropping big hits but still couldn't compete with Disco mainly because Disco was being played at all the discotheques (nightclubs) and skating rinks.
In 1978, George Clinton and Funkadelic exploded beyond the R&B charts with One Nation Under A Groove and he knew then what he had to do to crush Disco once and for all, so he wrote the song Knee Deep and sent it to his friend Juni Morrison from the legendary Ohio Players.
It was Juni, not George, who created this amazing track and when he sent it back to George Clinton, George knew it was a hit and he had the band that could handle it.
So, the genius that he was, George had Michael "Kidd Funkadelic" Hampton on lead guitar along with Phillippe Winn (from the legendary Spinners) ad-libbing the lead vocals near the end. Let me also add that if you think the drums on this track is through the roof and as funky as a beat can get, it was legendary Funk bassist Bootsy Collins who, coincidentally, played drums on this song (as well as on One Nation Under A Groove).
The entire rest of the song is just the Mighty P-Funk mob doing what they do best and the rest is history.
By the way, in case you all are wondering how George was able to recruit Juni Morrison from the Ohio Players and Phillippe Winn from the Spinners, it's because they were both homeboys and good friends of Bootsy Collins. NOW YOU KNOW

@@snellsman Thanks. BTW, did I mention that Bootsy Collins was on drums on this song (and on One Nation Under A Groove)? This is why the unique Funk rhythm of the snare is in a deadlock with the bass line.

My mother born in "82 and my father in "81. I was born in 2005 and I'm 15 years old. I bump this song almost everyday and not just this song but all this music. I thank god for my parents staying true to the Ol Skool and passing it on to me. All I listen is music from the 90s and down. I even bump music from the 30s. I sure do stand out in a crowd because everything about me is old school. The music, the clothing, the culture, the mentality. I have much love for this song and for every other old school track there is and I have much love for the people who made these songs, for the people who lived through it, the people who still live it today, and for the people who have passed it on to us. We need to keep this alive because the old school is a dying breed that needs to live on forever and I'm definitely gonna keep it going with my kids and my kids kids. This is something that will never die and to all the people from the old school I shout out all my love to you and to finish it off let's keep on bumpin this funk!

No, Sis, none of these members were replaceable. Phillippe Wynn absolutely CRUSHED it on his vocals, but would the song have sizzled without Michael Hampton's scorching guitar solo or Bootsy Collin's deep funk beat on drums, or Junie Morrison's smooth keyboard melody?
What about Garry Shider, George Clinton and Jessica Cleaves on that dope vocal chorus?

I swear you took the words right out of my mouth. One of the things that makes George Clinton one of music's all-time geniuses is his ability to recognize talent and allow that talent to flow unleashed. There were many R&B/Funk bands back in that era that may not have allowed Michael Hampton the freedom to rock a guitar solo like that. The true brilliance of Parliament-Funkadelic is its freedom to catch a vibe and just flow with it.

Most of their stuff was recorded at United Sound Studios on 2nd. This the first group I ever seen preform in a concert at the Olympia Stadium back in 1977, I was 13 years old. Being born in 64 ,and raised thru out 70's, 80's, and 90's, we experienced the best music, ( I DID SAY MUSIC) that was ever recorded. U had to be there, and I'm very pleased that I was present. Thank u Uncle George, and all the other masterful musicians, engineers, writers, producers, entertainers.

Went to the chocolate jam in DC 1978. It was the one nation tour and they landed the mothership too. Show started at 1pm and ended around midnight...Rick James , Raydio, Mother’s Finest, Sky, Bootsy rubber band, and other bands I can’t remember. Awesome show. George and the funk mob closed the show.
