How to: Pine Cone Fire Starters

- This video demonstrates how to make pine cone fire starters (great as holiday gifts) with candle making supplies such as paraffin wax, wicks, fragrance oils, candle dyes and pine cones. Happy Holidays from all of us at Peak!
I don't understand the confusion. These aren't candles. The string is simply a 'handle to facilitate dunking. Trim the string (or leave it on, doesn't matter) and toss into fire place. They will help start the fire, burn colorfully and give of a perfumed scent. I dont melt wax in a pot. I wash out a canned food can so when I'm done I don't have to deal with the clean-up.
what is wrong with all you people?these are not candles and should not be burned in that manner. they work great out doors on a patio fire pit or in a back yard bon fire.im not sure i would want to use them in the house but i know people who do.anything pine lights easily due to the dryness of it and all the sap. i think this was an amazing video and honestly cant wait to make these myself.would make adorable xmas gifts!
calm down
You don't have to wrap the pinecone in the wick because you can just dip the pinecone in the wax and then lite it and it'll burn like that

My mom only has a wood stove and once it goes out (which it does easily), it takes awhile to get it lit again. I saw this idea in Birds & Blooms, but I appreciate the video of how it's done. I can't wait to start making these! Plus, her home will smell good :)
@knightbook1003 I'd say get a larger pot, put in a screen or something to keep the can from toughing the bottom of the pot, pour in water until it's about 1/3 full and set it on the burner, then put some wax in your can to weigh it down and set it in the pot. then turn on the heat and add the desired amount of wax. using a double boiler greatly reduces the chances that the wax will get too hot and ignite in your can.
I've tried pinecones without wax and works great also works great if sprayed cooking oil, But wouldnt the fire flame melt the wax and thus extinguished the fire?
Wow, that was wonderful! I use old candle wax and melt it down, then pour it over dryer lint-filled egg cartons valleys!
I made these last Christmas for gifts. I just shared your link on another fb page. They turned out great! I would include a pic if I could. I didn't use liquid dye but concentrated candle dye from Craft 2000. I am sure you can also use old crayons or wax from old candles. My sister used these in her fireplace and had no mess after they burned. Thanks for sharing your video.

Wooowww!! Hermoso.
Espero haberte ayudado! Suerte! Saludos desde Uruguay
Hey, c'mon y'all . . it was a refreshing break! Nice job!
Makes me want to go out searching for pine cones. Thanks for the tutorial.
Yes, Yes

I drain mine on brown packing paper that can go in the fireplace too
I've been making these for years. You light the 'wick' and put it in the fireplace. Then pile the wood on top of it. I thought that was self explanatory.
Copy but Good

Verra & Pink - the pine cones ARE flammable and are not dangerous to use because this is a video on how to make a fire starter. These aren't supposed to be candles. :) I think it's ingenious.
Instead of waiting for them to cool, before you re-dip.. you could dip them in cold water.

These are christmas tree ornaments, not firestarters...
can you use soy wax?
Gracias
@Verradonairun Ahm - pinecones are flammable - yes - you are making firestarters - you NEED to make it out of something flammable. BTW, wax is flammable too!!! Sheesh!
My comment is over a year old. I know about the wick now, not sure why I didn't over a year ago though. I must have been drunk or something.
Gracias
how much do you think one of these would sell for if you made some for a church fundraiser?

@neetsx83x This isn't a candle - it's a firestarter!! Read the title of the video!!
Thanks for sharing the details! Very nice...great gift idea!
I'm wanting to melt the wax in a can as the lady below says. Do I melt it on or in the stove?
Buenas tardes muy interesante gracias bendiciones
If I sprinkle borax powder on it after the final dip, will this work to cause a neat change of color?
@16amapola it would probably be really messy but i dont see why not
i want to share these ideas but your privacy settings block me....

I put it on my Facebook page, then messenger...
@PrettyBonesArt Didn't see the wick. I must have been exhausted when I saw the video. Plus I commented 8 months ago, so yeah.....
Do you have to use special wax, I have tried wax from our local Good Will, and have no luck with the wax staying on the pine cones, it runs right off.
let wax cool. I read the ideal temp should be 130-140 degrees.
Its easier to dip in wax than in coldd water than repeat
What brand Iiquid candle dye were you using?

@Kiana Jamshidinezhad I hate myself too.
Thumbs down for not giving us a burn down time
Mr Skull Top We're all pinecones.
Burn time on a fire STARTER. LMAO! These aren't the 4 hour burn logs. They are only meant to start a wood burning fire. You don't need a burn time for that.
this takes me straight back to my childhood - we used to live on a farm and our house was surrounded by pine trees, my dad used to use the pine cones as braai (barbeque) coal. Never thought to use them as firestarters though

Can you use bee's wax? I'm a bee keeper and would like another use for my wax than just candles.

What is a firestarter? I mean, besides the obvious. Do you throw it in a fireplace or what?

can you put in spanish what is that I need to make this pelase?
major aprende ingles!
Why would dipping it in wax help the pine cone to start a fire any easier? Seems like it would just leave wax droplets in my fireplace.
Nicole Synadinos We're all pinecones.
Nicole Synadinos, I believe it is because the wax slows down the burn giving your logs ample time to get a good start. And it's pretty too! Geometry Dash Cubic, yes, I know... we're all %&$*(! pinecones!
