      @@daveb2280 Yeah, I don't know why anyone would willfully agree to this. Big Tech has proven time and time again that it doesn't respect privacy, cannot regulate itself and is unworthy of trust. And it goes way back. The earliest example I can think of was Eric Schmidt retroactively altering the Google EULA and then lying publicly about it; 2006 I believe, but could be wrong. I'm trained as a network engineer but I have been so disgusted by the industry and the dystopia I believe they are creating that I walked away from it a couple years ago. I haven't been on social media since '08. I rarely carry a cell phone. It's ubiquitous; data collection that is. We are the raw materials in an emerging surveillance capitalism.

Technically he is right .the computer neccessary to crack decent encryption (kind used for long term storage of important data) without the key would be impossible. Hacking itself is an issue but normally by somebody having the decrypted data (end user) or not properly storing the key.

      @BlackDawg UNIVERSAL means everyone pays for it and everyone gets to use it. Access isn't enough when money is a barrier for service and treatment. I mean, public schools, roads, fire departments, police services, libraries, the military, and much more are provided by the government via taxes. Single-payer healthcare works in all industrialized countries like England, Canada, Australia, South Korea, and Japan. If the United States is (supposedly) the best country in the world, we could do a much better job with healthcare than all of these countries.

    I’m trying to figure out how digitizing health records, can be worse than having your health record on paper in an unlocked filing cabinet in your doctors office. Can anyone explain?

    • @MemoGrafix
      @MemoGrafix 5 років тому +5

      When medical records are on paper in a locked filing cabinet, there is that chance it can be broken into by a person and distributed to far fewer than digital.
      Much like pictures of embarrassing events when photographs was only on paper, a few/some people would see it - may lose the pictures, destroy or may crumble from age/wear when not preserved properly.
      Now the Internet is in full effect, an embarrassing picture will go viral instantly for billions to see for years and make Memes about it. Once that happens there is no way to stop it.
      Paper in a filing cabinet, work of some sort is involved to access it. Digital filing on the Internet easy for the many Hackers who are worldwide.

    • @nicoblaxx
      @nicoblaxx 5 років тому +2

      MemoGrafix Any reasonable health record system would make adequate use of encryption to prevent unauthorized access/viewing of the data.
      Also the point you just made is an example of why digitizing would be better, because digital health records can’t be lost or damaged due to wear and tear like your photograph example.
      Why bother with emails? They can be intercepted by the many hackers worldwide. Why not just send letters via the postal service?

    • @MemoGrafix
      @MemoGrafix 5 років тому +2

      *nicthemartian -* Hmmm...If you figured you had the answer why ask in the first place?? You sound far to trusting of any of these systems.
      Data that's encrypted does get decrypted, not all however, and all of it is subject to being decrypted by a skilled hacker at anytime.
      Also, digitized data and storage mediums can/do get corrupted and can get what's called *"Data decay, data rot or bit rot."*
      I still use *"snail mail"* for very private info/data. I don't care if its slower, oh well.
      In any event why would a person want to accept corporate retail like Amazon/Apple/etc. to be in ones personal medical history?
      I don't go to doctors anymore for the last 15+ years unless I have been physically damaged (ie. broken bones) of some kind. _So far, so good, knock on wood._ I know it sounds silly, and I was very limited with what I have told doctors back when I did frequent seeing them.
      *_I don't trust today's pharmaceutical-corrupted medical church._*

    • @nicoblaxx
      @nicoblaxx 5 років тому +2

      MemoGrafix Sorry if it came across argumentative.
      What I meant was I think we should put our focus on improving electronic health record systems as opposed to holding on to these legacy systems.
      Amazon having your health records is very scary I’ll admit, but the idea is it would be regulated and audited a differently than other forms of data would be, such as your shopping history for example.
      I completely get your point though.

    • @Matt-sj4ib
      @Matt-sj4ib 5 років тому

      @@MemoGrafix That isn't strictly true. A physical record has no audit trail. Pulling an EHR from any major system (TPP SystmOne, EMIS, Cerner, NHS SCR etc) is audited.
      On top of that, EHR information is kept behind multiple security layers like Imprivata on computers and chip-and-pin smartcards for certain data.
      A physical record can be copied/faxed/stolen very easily without solid data as to who took it.

  • @BiancaAguglia
    @BiancaAguglia 5 років тому +4

    There's no doubt that using data science in the medical field has benefits that far outweigh the negatives:
    - in emergency procedures, doctors have almost instant access to critical data that can save the patient's life;
    - in medical research, having access to huge amounts of data can help find patterns that small data sets miss;
    - in the case of new drugs, using artificial intelligence models can help identify effective drugs and make them available sooner than before to ill patients.
    The list goes on.
    That doesn't mean we should downplay the risks of AI and data science in medicine. There are plenty of things that can (and will go wrong) and there are plenty of players whose main goal is making money (instead of their goal being to make healthcare better (and make money as a result).
    It just means that it's worth the effort to use data science and AI tools extensively in medicine, and figure out how to reduce the risks, and how to correct the things that will go wrong.

    • @dangergranger1

      I agree, but the data shouldn't be exposed to e-commerce giants and should be secured incredibly tightly against leaks.

    • @BiancaAguglia
      @BiancaAguglia 5 років тому

      @@dangergranger1 E-commerce companies get our data because we choose to shop with them (unless they buy it from mailing lists vendors).
      So a simple solution is to stop shopping online.
      I, for one, have a hard time doing that (and I'm a minimalist, for crying out loud. 😁). The online shopping is faster, cheaper, and gives me a better selection.
      The only fair expectation we can have is that those who collect our data are not allowed to sell it. Also, we should be able to ask for our data to be deleted if we stop dealing with a vendor/service provider.
      As far as leaks go, I am positive that vendors try hard to not let them happen. Not because they care about us, but because it hurts them a lot: damaged reputation, lawsuits, lost money.
      The problem is that cyber criminals are getting more and more sophisticated. They get smarter. We get wiser. The never ending cat and mouse game. 😕
