Wow! Interesting presentation based on some compelling research. Your description of the "single-source documentation" on historical "facts" reminded me of the laudanum-junkie reputation that General John Bell Hood suffers from due to a single allegation from back in the day. I don't find Varney's arguments compelling. Grants name has been slandered enough in the pages of history. Varney seems to lack nuance and subtitle in his assessments of both sides of the relationships between Grant and Rosecrans, Thomas, Hooker, etc. Never mind the overwhelming evidence of Grant's judicious handling of dozens of other relationships.

Single source documentation is a known problem in historical study. Still gives Grant more credit than he’s worth.
