Sewing Hack: Perfect Hem Facing for No-Show Ties on the Gilbert Top

  • Welcome back to my channel! In this video, I show you how I added a hem facing on the Gilbert Top so you cannot see the wrong side of the fabric when you tie the top at the waist. I don't pretend this is the "best" or even "right" way to do it, but it worked for me on both my new Gilbert tops so I thought I'd share.

Thanks for taking the time to produce this tutorial, it is very helpful and much appreciated. I think your sleeveless version looks great and I absolutely adore the colour and pattern of your material. Gorgeous summer top.

Well, that was a cool tutorial Izzy! I think the top looks very beautiful on you.
I like the shorter version of it because it looks cute.

You are a great, thorough teacher. I really enjoy all your shares. The problems you described with this top are not visible to me and I hope you will be comfortable wearing this beautiful top. You have inspired me to add this to my collection of need to makes!

You did it just like I remember from a favorite RTW top I wore at age 13! Yes, I get the recommendation to size down for the sleeveless, but you have a pretty, airy, and very comfortable top for the summer! ❤ Kelly

Thank you Kelly! If I make this again, I think I'll size down because as much as I love the comfy feel of it, I think there's just too much ease at the sides and armholes.

I like the blouse on you. It just looks like it is supposed to be larger in the body bc the upper part fits you so well. You could also take it in a little on the sides. I think the blouse is worth it. Thank you for the excellent tutorial.

Thank you so much! I might try taking it in a tad under the armhole and tapering to nothing at the hips because I do like the fit at the hips.

Really interesting video, as usual , Izzy. I did almost exactly that, but I finished my interfacing at the side seams and overlocked (serged) the side seams. I think the colour and fabric you used for your shirt is such a nice mustardy shade and will go with so many things😊xx

Thank you so much Shelly! And yes, ending the facing at the side seams definitely works. I hadn’t even thought of that.

Hi Izzy. This is great thank you- just what I need for my next make- it has been on hold until I saw this😊. I have made a couple of tie side wrap skirts this summer (McCalls) and didn’t like the ties on the first one. For my second one I made up my own facing pieces and phased them in to the skirt facing. Worked a treat. Glad you have done the work on this one though😂😂. Happy Sewing. Lynne

I think your top looks lovely on you Izzy! The style is very flattering. I’ve not made this pattern but I really like it! Did you stay stitch the armholes after you cut the pieces out? If not they may have stretched or distorted a bit and that could be why they aren’t laying as flat as you’d like. How did you secure the facing in the back? Thanks for sharing, you are a wonderful teacher!❤

I enjoyed watching that tutorial and useful for many similar patterns. Did you sew the facing up onto the top? If you did you can't see the seam so you did a great job. Thanks for working that out and sharing ❤ xx

Yes, I sewed the facing by machine but my thread colour is almost identical to my fabric! I got really lucky with it 🤣 xx 💞

I like the loose fit. Maybe it is just the stiffer binding that is bothering you.

    • @dizzyquiltsandsews

I think the stiffness of the binding is definitely bothering me and is preventing the armhole from laying properly. Oh well... it's still wearable.

Thank you Donna! Yes, I staystitched the neckline and armholes as the first step. I think it's just too big but not bad enough that I won't wear it. I think it's a cute top! I sewed the facing down at the top of the facing all around.
