That line has such deep meaning, especially in this episode. The viewing, as sad as it is, is supposed to be about Nellie. Sadly, the others let their arguments, personal drama, and pettiness overshadow the reasons they are there. Only when her coffin falls from the table are they snapped back to the moment of what has happened and where they are. Nellie, she just wanted them together as a family, but they couldn't even manage that. "I was right here the whole time, none of you could see me."

The way Bent Neck Lady goes from terrifying to sad is one of the greatest executions of tone shift in modern film history. Flanagan is actually a master.

Mike Flanagan in each of his series usually has one big long take where they don't do any cuts and all of the actors prep for it. This is the episode for Hill House. Most of the funeral home scenes didn't have any cuts and were done in one take. The longest going for 17 minutes long. Outside of the cuts to the Hill House flashbacks, it was done in 5 long takes. It's pretty amazing film making and is a credit to how good his casts are in his shows. Netflix even did a little video about it you can find on YT.

I also remember there was an interview with Flanagan where he said he was worried about the child actors being able to remember all their lines for the long takes, and he said something like (and I'm paraphrasing) 'turns out, I didn't need to be worried at all, because all the children had their lines memorized better than the adults' lol

To be fair to Steve, he has a lot of anger and grief he hasn't dealt with and was unable to deal with because his dad never told him the full story of what had happened to his mum. (understandably so, but Steve doesnt know that). As far as he knows his mum was ill, and his dad who he had idolised hadn't got her help. As the eldest, he feels a responsibility to protect the others and that's what he's desperately trying to do, even if it comes over as coldness. I know most people find Steve to be their least liked of the siblings, but I can relate to him so much I just can't dislike him even if he does make poor choices

Being a big theatre fan, I love this episode. The sense of tragic family reunion is so intimate. As a viewer, you really feel like you’re there in moment with them.
Gotta admit, I figured the two of you would get so involved in the plot of this episode that you would miss Nellie in the background and the statue’s head moving. Delighted to be wrong.

This is one of my favourite episodes of all Netflix-series shows. It works so well at this point in the story after we've gotten to know the family one by one. The single shot performance really adds to it too.

a lot people dont like steve but maybe if we're in his situation.... we'll be that angry too. imagine your mom is a beautiful, gentle and caring woman and you love her so, so much she's your entire world. then she's suddenly change, looks like she's sick, she acts weird, which leads to her taking her own life. as a kid we dont understand things, so dad, the only parent you have left is the only person you can ask questions, he's supposed to answer it clearly (like how theo told shirly what to say to her kids if they're asking about nell's death). but hugh never answer, never give them the explanation they deserve, so THESE KIDS NEVER HAVE A CLOSURE. they keep wondering why, how, whats actually happen to mom? that must've been so hard and painful for them as kids, losing their beloved mother in that way and the only adult that they trust just stay silent.
so yeah, if i were steve, maybe i'd be that angry too.

Perfect. People say that long takes in movies and television are showing off, and take viewers out of scenes to say "look at how cool we are". Sometimes it's like that, but not in this episode. You both felt everything this technique was there to accomplish - the building of an atmosphere, the ramping up of tension, the weight and thrill of actors performing together live - while never being distracted by the technique itself.

The buttons over Nell's eyes might refer to the custom of placing a coin over each eyelid of the deceased. The reasons for this can vary, but in Ancient Greece it was believed that the coins would be used to pay the toll demanded by Charon, the Ferryman of the river Styx, which separates the land of the living from the land of the dead.
A masterful episode, with fantastic long takes. Keep in mind that two of the actors were only six years old when this was shot! Just amazing - and it hits on an emotional level as well!

This episode captures such a powerful idea: that many ghost stories, at their core, are really just tragedies. Lives cut off unexpectedly, unfinished business, unresolved feelings. Heartbreak that can't be healed, because it's already too late to fix things.

I think its because he feels the most combative to the family. I personally love his character but hes the one who goes against his family the most.
Shirelys is combative but mostly just to steve so some people arent as bothered about that. Theo is a mess and kind of rude but shes cool and also doesnt really argue with family. Nell for obvious reasons is hard to dislike and is selfless especially when it comes to family. And luke really hurt his family members but we feel for him so much in his episode that it is hard to dislike him (also the only time they actually show him hurting people is the scene with Nell)
The skeptical thing comes in too. Viewers who believe in the supernatural in real life struggle to connect with steve as hes the most outwardly abrasive to the idea of the supernatural

You seem to have finally understood it when you say that Nelly's appearance makes you sad rather than scared. Congratulations, that's the point. And as you have correctly remembered what the Mother says, the ghosts are not there to hurt them.
If you've been paying attention, you'll have noticed that every time her family argues, Nelly intervenes or tries to intervene. She's trying to make herself noticed. She turns off the light and the coffin falls down as well. But as she had been all her life, she was not taken seriously or overlooked. And "nobody can see me"
Furthermore, you seems to have forgotten that Theo is a lesbian. So you can assume that it wasn't what it looked like with Shirley's husband. And she was drunk.

The inversion of “traditional” familial roles is a good dramatic turn. Of the kids, the youngest - and a recovering addict to boot - comes off as the most level-headed, and Theo is at least drunkenly honest and direct (and honest about her drunkenness), while the oldest siblings are just trash fires of self-righteousness. Dad’s still dad’ing, though, to the point of self-effacement.
What the show does well, tho, is making you feel bad for all of them - just, y’know, some of them make it harder at times.
And good on Kevin to admit to taking the money. One of the others (cough Steve cough) probably would have said it if Kevin hadn’t, so not a lot of choice, but at least he came clean

I feel like this is the most... I don't know, I guess disconnected episode. Don't get me wrong, it's not bad and it belongs here, but it very much feels more realistic in a way that breaks the immersion from the other episodes. Like, you're sucked into the story in the other episodes and then this one pulls you out a bit and makes you feel very much like you're observing the events rather than living them. There are very large portions of the episode that are done in one shot, there's not a lot of music playing, all of that gives it a sort of jarring feel compared to the rest of the episodes. Because of this, I feel like this is my least favorite episode (but keep in mind, least favorite out of a bucket of nothing but amazing is still amazing).

Isn't that what it would be like for so many, that they're there but not really there because it's almost unfathomable that one would be gone or taken away so suddenly? That's my takeaway. It's a funeral, a human event. It's almost kinda visceral but interior kind of visceral. It couldn't have been "nicely" filmed.

@@genghisgalahad8465 oh yeah, don't get me wrong, it's definitely done correctly, but it's still my least favorite because of it XD

@PeterDB90 I dunno. I don't have a "least" favorite episode (just so I can be different) when it's overall one continuing story. It's a funeral. I don't know one that isn't a pause in life or in stories. Everything stops at a funeral, no matter what story it's in. Looking back is often done at funerals. Nobody's thinking so much of their plans the next day or whatnot. Only looking back. It's my best episode. I mean, real life funerals put people together who regularly wouldn't be normally. It's even stated later on in the next. You get your "back to action" after the wake, which this was. I realized it was the wake before the funeral. And in that regard, they're the things people want to do the "least" if at all. And nobody normally wants to as human beings. And yet the story is being told of what happened. It's kinda like the common criticism of a Walking Dead "slow" "filler" character focused episode. It's that kinda vibe, your comment. You're pretty clear about it, so there's no getting you wrong. You know? Who wants a wake? Not many people, if any.

Then I fall into that "majority" category of people who find it uncomfortable so they have a desire to avoid it, even in fictional stories - this is why it's my least favorite, not because it doesn't have enough progression or action, but because the episode just makes me feel uncomfortable. Even the acting changes to feeling almost improvisational (no doubt in part the result of long camera takes), so there's something almost uncanny about this episode that transcends the usual "horror" that you see in the show.
