god, this piece of media has aged so poorly it's laughable but i can't bring myself to hate it because it was there for me in my darkest times and without it being in my formative years i think i genuinely would be worse off as a person. my experience with hetalia is so niche that i doubt many people coming across this comment will relate to it, but i can't deny that the vapid country people anime makes me feel warm inside sometimes sue me T T i don't feel much love for the source media, but there's so many talented and wonderful people in this fandom and i hope the ones that moved on are having good days. things are pretty chill over on tumblr, at least if you are looking at people who create for asian and african countries (the colonization and imperialism apologists seem to have deserted and left for other fandoms) . i don't see myself coming back to this fandom as well, a fan, but i am grateful for the ways hetalia has shaped me no matter how questionable it could be at best and downright ludicriously insensitive at worst. the mediocre media with occasionally jaw droppingly good fan content that consumed you whole as a preteen never leaves you entirely, and sometimes, that's not all bad ! don't view the problematic media you were obsessed with as a young and impressionable preteen with rosy lenses to make yourself feel "less bad" for liking it, being critical of the media you enjoy is a must, but you are not a bad person for having good memories from "embarrassing" fandoms. in particular, if you're a person of color who was into hetalia, especially at it's peak, you are braver than any marine. i can't fit all my complex thoughts on this in a youtube comment but uh yeah. this block of text is just here because i was feeling very melancholic looking back on my life. i don't regret being into hetalia, but also there's just so much more out there. this isn't meant to be disrespectful to people in the fandom NOW more power to you if you handle the personifications with tact and nuance !! have a good whatever time it is in your country and pls drink some water ! nee nee papa~
