- Welcome to The Joy of Sticks! Today we are playing a demo of Myth, a game that never saw a release on the ST. Stick with my pathetic early attempts, because at the end I finally get my act together and figure things out.

As ever, a huge thank you to everyone at Atarimania and Atari Legend for their amazing work:

Recorded at 50fps using a real Atari 1040 STe (4mb, TOS v1.62, PAL), RGB SCART, a Micomsoft X-Sync1 and a Startech PexHDcap capture card.
Stickhed it's so good to see you back posting.
Thanks for the kind words! It's good to be back!
That swooshing sword made a reappearance in first samurai.
Yes! I'm a sucker for a bit of attack animation motion blur. Strider and Dynasty Wars weren't the best games on the ST, but damn they made swords and spears look cool.
I remember playing this demo! It may have just been me, but as as kid, it was a rare occasion to get a new full game for my Atari ST. The cover disks were my entertainment and I used to play demos to death. I have particularly strong memories of this, daylight robbery and Turrican II (up to but not including the first boss). I also remember desperately trying to work out whether you could actually play any of the rolling demos; so frustrating!
It's not just you! Even for a prolific pirate such as myself, those cover disks were godsends. I loved the ST Format one in particular because it would have serious software on it that made me feel like an absolute boss. I've not played Daylight Robbery. Worth a go?
Sees Wolf thumbnail, immediately clicks on it!
Oh no! I used a clickbait thumbnail! All those poor Unexpecting Wolf fans will be so disappointed. 😞
@@thejoyofsticks well I didn’t like to say, but yes, you tricked us (me) 🐺😂
"oh, no! my sword!"
i remember MYTH being a huge deal on the 8-bits in 1989. everyone talks about how late that was in the ZX's life -- i stuck with mine 'til early '93!
Was it good on her Spectrum? I don't think I've ever even seen a screenshot.
@@thejoyofsticks
the big thing back then was that it animated nice and more-or-less defeated color-clash. C64's definitely the way to go, but the ZX is a close second, i'd say.
I've just watched a video. It looks great! I'm definitely going to have to play it.
Glad you figured it out 👍
Great to have you back Marc!
Great to be back, Simon! 👍
Great video and a great piece of history. I had no idea. Cool story Marc.
And that is what I call perseverance ❤
Cheers! A couple of days after playing, I was struck by a vague memory of the skulls going into the lava being important, so I came back to it. It seems the completed Amiga version has quite a few of these almost Dizzy style inventory puzzles. Use your sword to stab Achilles' heel to get his shield. Use the shield to get the enemies to bow down and not attack so you can get to Medusa, chop Medusa's head off to use it as a weapon against the Hydra etc etc etc. It's a cool idea, but I hope the finished game gives the player some hints towards the solution.
@@thejoyofsticks wow, I would not have the patience nor the brain for those kind of puzzles. But it looks cool anyway and it reminds me of a more advanced 'Beyond the Ice Palace'. Definitely the atmosphere...
Great vid. and what a convoluted way to kill a boss. As I remember the Ameoba version was a bit of a disk swapping behemoth. Still shame we never got it. We didn't get Daylight Robbery (only a demo) either which is more of a shame in my eyes.
Thanks, Kev! Yes, I'm hoping the final game would have some kind of hint system to direct you towards the solution.
Ooh, I don't know about Daylight Robbery. I'll have to check it out.
The graphics looked really nice
The final Amiga version had even nicer graphics (better animations, more detailed sprites... they even gave the dude trousers), so I guess the ST's would have improved too if they'd released it.
I had this for my Amiga 1200, the music at the start always creeped me out but a nice looking game.
I've just watched a video. It's certainly atmospheric, isn't it?
I think I played this on the Amiga and never figured this out. It's an incredibly obtuse and bizarre solution. Things like that and the lack of any damage feedback whatsoever make it hard for me to go back to some older games. I can deal with a sluggish interface, but not even knowing if what I'm doing has any effect or not is just not fun
Thanks for the video!
I had a little Google to see if maybe the Greek myth of the chimera contained some hint or something. Maybe something that we are supposed to know from our high school history, but no. Just a strangely scripted sequence of hoops the player must jump through to succeed. Apparently, the other levels of the completed Amiga game have similar solutions.
It was quite uncanny how sick days off from school coincided with the arrival of a new cover disk laden issue of ST Format... Well done for persevering to the end! I wonder if the Amiga version was trident-ical?
Tridentical! Oh dear... Those cover disks were incredibly exciting. I even used to muck around with the disk utilities and boot managers etc. so much fun.
This was one of my favourite games on the C64. Much better than the 16 bit versions, imo.
Nice! Always good when the 8-bits get one over on their younger brothers. Wizball was another example.
I bought Myth for the Commodore 64 when they re-released it as a budget game (about 1992). It's a stylish game with moody graphics, the intro music by Jeroen Tel is insane, there is digitised speech and the animation is superb. But the controls were awkard. It's a classic for sure, but it's also one of those games that made you realise that a single button joystick wasn't gonna cut it anymore.
Ooh, I'll go and search for the music. Jeroen Tel was a wizard. I remember my C64 owning mate telling me it was a good game. Did it have a similar control scheme (hold fire, press a direction to attack)?
@@thejoyofsticks it's worse honestly.. they managed to map jump to both up an down!
Down to jump? Now there's a first.
@@thejoyofsticks
"jump up, jump up and get down..."
Strange they went as far as a working playable demo but never sold the game!
Its one of those games youd never guess how to beat that boss unless someone told you! lol
I hadn't a scooby at he time, but a couple of days later a little memory pinged of knocking the skulls into the lava. I must have read about it in the magazine or something.
I remember the Spectrum and C64 versions being very well regarded whilst the Amiga version was praised for the graphics and sound but they felt that the change from a young boy to more of a warrior type detracted from the spirit of the original concept.
Apparently the game was released in America and reskinned as a Conan game and its this reskin that forms the basis for the Amiga and what would have been the ST version. Personally I would have preferred they simply upgraded the original game, although as the C64 and Speccy play very differently (each playing to their strengths) then I wonder which version they would consider the original (although given it was System 3 and they were very much focused on the C64 that version would have been seen as the lead version).
For all of it though Myth is a good game in its own right just loses some of the innocence of the 8-bit versions.
Yes! The whole 'boy out of time saves the world' thing seems like a top notch plot to immerse young players of the game. A bizarre decision to drop it. It seems to me that the C64 version was the lead platform, with other branching from their. The gameplay is certainly similar to this ST demo and the completed Amiga version. The Speccy version does look very nice to play, though. I've seen the NES version of the game listed as Conan. Its the same game, but ss usual, the NES going its own way and doing its own thing!
Reminds me of fist samurai , graphical wise
No bad thing! That sword swoosh especially.
A superb demo, this, if a tad lethargic. Detailed graphics and everything. Also, IK sans the plus is the superior IK ;)
Ermm... I think you may need to reassess your life choices, Bob.
@@thejoyofsticks A gentlemanly duel is in order then. I demand satisfaction!
@@bobfromsoireegames4309 As long as the duel is on IK+, I'm in!
@@thejoyofsticks I think the presence of a third opponent disqualifies that game from duelling purposes! 😏
I played this demo a lot of times, I was very excited because it seemed to be a really beautiful game, but it was sooooo slow, sluggish and with unresponsive controls. The 1st level is very close to Black Tiger. I tryed the Amiga version recently, but the slow movements kill the playability too. It’s a pity that this game wasn’t never finished for ST, with better controls and fast movements. The jumping mecanics are almost the same than Satan.
The jump looks very different on the finished Amiga version; smoother and more natural. I fancy giving Black Tiger a go too. The screenshots are intriguing, but the framerate in some of the videos I've watched may be too slow to get into the game properly.
The protagonist really does look just like Wolf... 😄 I really like the detailed sprites and nice animation, but the dev would have really needed to up the frame rate and responsiveness. It looks like it's running in slow motion. 😬 It's a shame a really polished full version didn't appear, as I think it could have been something pretty special for the ST.
Right? There's no way the graphics artist didn't realise that. If you watch the Amiga version, the animations have been tweaked and things are much faster and more responsive. No way of knowing if the ST version would have gone the same way, though.
The font used at 2:52 and elsewhere is a dead giveaway that the artwork and probably the main coding was done on Amigas. Probably Deluxe Paint.
Warning! Getting addicted to the regular uploads!
Mwah ha ha! My plan is bearing fruit! *taps fingers together
With the low framerate, this version should be easier! Graphics are very nice for the ST at least but yeah, you need to know how to play this one. Very specific (read obtuse!) order of things.
Did the final Amiga game have these weird unintuitive puzzles too? I figured the final game might give you hints or something.
@@thejoyofsticks A while ago someone made a nice playthough video explaining everything but I can't find it now unfortunately. There might be hint or a story in the manual; I don't know. If you do know what to do the game is VERY short so it's really a puzzle and action game. Gorgeous graphics on all systems and even the main character sprite is completely different for the 16-bit versions but I can't decide whether it's a good game or not. Apparently on the NES (as "Conan") it wasn't well received at all which might have something to do with the European to America curse. They just don't appreciate our technical priorities (usually neglecting gameplay in the process!)
Oh and for this level you're meant to beat up skellies until one drops its sword, cut down the hanged one so it falls into lava thus becoming a sacrifice of sorts for Beelzebub who will rise from the flames and release a devil with a pitchfork. Shoot the devil with the fireball you get from killing the flying imp things so he drops that third weapon which is the only thing the Cerberus(?) is vulnerable to. I'll leave the rest (on another computer!) for you to figure out.
Thank you for the tips! I don't know if you made it to the end of the video, but I did eventually figure it out. It took a couple of days away from the game for a deeply buried memory of skulls flying into the lava to re-emerge. :D
I suppose we had longer attention spans back then; more patience to try things out and persevere until we happen upon something new. I'm reminded of point and click adventure games. They were often like that, weren't they? "Use the blah on the thing to get the doohickey".
Why is the lead singer of the Scorpions on the thumbnail for this video?
Gowron was the lead singer of a German hair metal band?
Also, stop making fun of Wolf from Gladiator!
I don't remember making fun. He's a bloody legend.
This was ported to one or two consoles and rebranded as Conan, but the result was a pretty broken game, unfortunately.
I didn't know that! Thanks for the info. Which consoles? I'll take a look...
@@thejoyofsticks I thought there was more than one but seems it was only the NES. It's pretty lousy. The C64 version is definitely worth a look though, even if it's a little tough/obtuse.
lol typically the NES just doing its own thing. It's funny how similar yet completely different the NES version is.
Myth on the amiga is a very good looking and sounding game ..the ST would have disappointed if released i recon ...very slow 🐌 🦥
Yeah, no doubt it would have been slower and less colourful than the Amiga version, but we still could have had something playable. (I'm reminded of the differences between the ST and Amiga versions of Wolfchild). Some tweaks to this code to speed things up a little.
