Popular is an understatement. At the time this was MUST SEE TV. People today can't fathom the impact that V had at the time. It was HUGE!!!!
HUGE!!!
We only had two channels back then, but these mini-series were some of the greatest television events in history at that point.
Even here in France, two years later... CULT!
It was HUGE. Everyone was tuning in to watch. V The Final Battle is excellent too.
Yep. It was big in Canada too!
I met Robert Englund at a horror convention in Arizona. I told him I loved him V, he gave me the V sign...
When I was stationed at Kadena AFB on Okinawa 1983-85, a friend of mine sent me a VHS recording of this series. I instantly became a celebrity of the barracks because at that time there was only one television station to watch, and it was in Japanese. There was no satellite or cable. The only things we had to watch, were what friends and family sent us from the states. We were so glad to get this we even watched the damn commercials!
Final Battle is a part of this series guys so dont worry :)
Yeah, with fantastic intro :D
So glad to see how many people loved the series. A big part of my childhood and still holds up LOVE IT
V terrified me as a 12 year old when it first aired in 1983 but I was hooked. It was the most shocking and horrific show about aliens ever produced for TV. Prior to this the scariest I remember was To Serve Man which was I believe an episode of The Outer Limits. This same year gave us the film War Games as well as the made for TV movie The Day After both of which dealt with the dangers and the horror of nuclear war. As all these took place at the height of the cold war with the former Soviet Union there was a lot of fear lingering in the air that we could be wiped out at any moment by the Russians and then V added another level of fear that the movie Alien had done just a few years prior at that time. It was a great time for creative film making as well as a time shrouded in fear.

IT'S A COOK BOOK

The theme music from V: The Final Battle was incredible! (That was a sequel to this V.)
yes i loved the theme music so much i had to record it on my cassette recorder at the time
@@TheTHX1974 It was a tour de force in music arranging meant to elicit dread in the listener. Made the hair on the back of the neck stand up just from the opening percussion and pedal point before the theme kicks in.
Yep! the final battle theme is awesome, i can still humm every part of it. such a haunting piece of music
V: The Final Battle's theme is on UA-cam.
My friends and I loved V in the 80s. The big talk in school.
In the revamp of V, Moreena Baccarin was the leader named Anna. Returning from the original series was Jane Badler as Diana Anna's mother and the Visitor's queen
Yes the revamp version was quite good, ashame they ended it on a cliff hanger, as than it started to get interesting with the Hybrid Child!
dont forget marc singer came back in last episode on series 2 but played diffrent person .
I only got to watch the first one or two episodes of the revamp
at first i hated the revamp because they marketed it as a remake. Later i found out that was a sequel that takes place about 20 years after the 1984 one, that made so much more sense then. (and then i watched it and loved it)
Can it really be I watched this classic mini series 40 odd years ago and remember it like it was yesterday? In the UK all parts were shown back to back so it was 5 epic nights of thrills and spills. Those were the days! Always loved the ominous synth music for V the final battle too.. ;)
Thank you for reacting to this! Can’t believe no one else has! One of the BEST miniseries of the ‘80s! We were transfixed! Julie and Diana were #futuregoals to my 10-year-old girl brain, but I also loved Ham Tyler. You have his brilliance to look forward to in The Final Battle, which is my favorite. Can’t wait to see what you think!
I had a huge crush on Faye Grant in the 80s.
Heh.... who didn't? =D
In the 80's? I STILL have a crush on Faye Grant!!
Nope. Jane Badler, any day of the week. I was like six or seven years old when this show came on, and Diana was the first woman I ever fell in love with. I don't care what's underneath that skin, I would still betray the human race for Diana.
She had some competition for my affection from Connie Sellecca on "Greatest American Hero," and Jane Badler on "V," but she was always a strong contender. 😊
In the 80's, it was Julie, but now it is Diana!
I saw this when I was young. Loved it. My favorite character was Willie. Such a sweet guy.
I know right. He's like Will Smith. You just can't imagine him doing something bad.
@@Arigator2Nope. Robert E. is not homosexual.
To this day, I still quote Willie's line "I am just".
So I remember when this first came out. It was a huge success. Everyone was watching and talking about it. I even remember before it aired, there were news reports about posters appearing in cities in popular shopping areas and subway stations and bus stops, showing a man in the visitors uniform and dark glasses saying that the visitors are our friends. Then a few weeks later, someone went around to all the posters and painted the red "V" on them like in the show. But no one knew what it meant yet so it caused a huge amount of intrigue and speculation over the meaning. It was a genius advertising plat. So cool. I watched both miniseries, the following tv series, and the remake. V is a great yet underrated sci fi franchise.
👋
Aaaah Im so happy to rewatch this ❤ (Im 41) , I watched this when I was young, teenager memories ❤️ 🤗
Im in France 🇫🇷
Hello !!! Moi aussi, c'était sur LA 5 !!!
Bonjour 🥖🍷
No kid today knows what a Ghetto Blaster is. Everybody wanted one before the Walkman came out.
We didn't have many channel choices back then, so V was amazing, magical and fun! It was a treat to have sci-fi on in primetime. Now it brings back great memories and feelings about an era that is gone forever. Being young, and the rarity and quality of the subject matter heightened the feelings.
God, Jane Badler was just so sizzle hot!😍
I remember this being on tv when I was a kid in the 80s. I’m pretty sure it was shown every night for 5 nights in the uk, and I recall it being huge. Everyone was talking about it.
In the Uk and in Europe Warner Brothers packaged both mini series together cause I remember watching in the late 80s in Italy
@@dmichael1172 yes must have done. As I remember it all as one series, yet they’ve just mentioned this was the end of the first series. Which seems incredibly weird.
@@jgmediting7770 it was 2 different mini series with the same continuous story but it was cheaper to them together in syndication
@@dmichael1172 Makes sense.
This is how I remember watching it in Washington state in America. There was a channel that played it every year over five nights. The same channel also played David Lynch's Dune broken up over five nights like a miniseries. I've not met anyone that remembers watching Dune in miniseries form like that, so I've always wondered if it was a local thing, to play these mini series annually like that.
Been a fan of this show since I was 8 years old in 1983. I was too young to make the parallel connection with WW2, propaganda & the Holocaust but immediately loved the story, the acting, the special effects, the deviousness etc. Then in the mid-90s, I got the chance to meet 'John' (Richard Herd) and got his autograph at a sci-fi convention. I was the last in line to meet him so I got to have quite a lengthy conversation with him. There was a selection of different photographic shots of him (10"x12") and I went for the most iconic photo of him from the whole series, from the third episode (no spoilers). He smirked and said "everyone picks that one" :P He was in absolutely no rush and such a sweet, accommodating guy; like a grandpa. I asked him if it was fun to make and he told me that all the cast had a blast making this series but the weather for the whole shoot was so hot in LA; it was a total nightmare for the makeup crew. I was just completely star struck & my mind went blank on further questions :) I still have the signed picture in a frame which he wrote "To xxxxxx. From John, your "supreme commander"- Richard Herd".
SO COOL!!!!
I have Diana's autograph on her 2d music album. I wish I would met her. Looove her as an actress as much as a singer too.
If that grandpa were alive today, he would be just shaking his head. Ppl just never learn... and always repeat history 😒
Facts!
The best mini series in sci fi history don’t care what anyone says. No matter how many times I watch it still has the same effect as the first watch.
Battlestar Galactica
Yeah it's also strong as a drama aside from the sci-fi elements. Very strong cast and everybody is playing it straight. Could have been cheese fest.
I think Diana is one of the greatest sci-fi villains ever. Written and played perfectly. Gradually it feels like absolutely everything is about Diana whether she's on screen or not.
Absolutely. Those who alain "Its XF don't hold up anymore" think CGI is the new Prophet or something.
@@Arigator2Good, but V still beats it hands down from start to finish.
@@noneya3635 BG was a full 4 season series
Loved this whole IP when it hit the small screen in the 80s
I was 9 when this came out. It was the greatest thing ever. The Final Battle the following year was even better. I mean, Michael Ironside makes everything better
V and V The Final Battle were all part of one book. V came out in the spring and info came out almost immediately and The Final Battle came out the fall. The whole thing was always intended to come out.
Alex Crispin's.
False. This was created for TV. The book was an adaptation of the original TV script.
@docsavage8640 does really matter point is there are 2 different book out there. I still have the original from childhood and I bought the other along with V The Second Generation back in 2008.
NBC has never risen to the same level since.
I was 9 years old when this came out and I loved it. It really fed that need for more Sci-Fi following the Star Wars boom and the other like minded shows such as Battlestar Galactica and Buck Rogers. Great show and the Final Battle is pretty good too.
Good times ! 🤓
@You, Me & The TV :
Glad to hear you're watching 'V - The Final Battle' too, and look forward to seeing it with you, and taking a stroll down memory lane.
As a kid, dad bought our first VCR recorder when these first aired, recorded them all and we watched these in repeat with neighbourhood kids, cause not many had VCR's back then here in Finland🤓
Funny story, me and my twin brother were popular amongst our close group of local neighbourhood kids, many came to visit and we watched this series. My last name starts with the letter V so we were called back then "the V-brothers" LOL
I saw this when it first aired on TV. I was OBSESSED. I was also really young (like maybe grade 3 or 4 at the time). I still love watching it. The VFX haven't aged all that well, but in their day they were truly groundbreaking. Even the TV series had its charms (the best episodes were the earliest in the season, by midpoint it had already jumped the proverbial shark).
I really want to talk about the pregnancy and the resulting childbirth scene, but I don't want to give away any spoilers. I think that it happens at the end of Part 1 of The Final Battle. But that's all I'm going to say.
Can't wait for next week! 😄
In the UK we didn't get this miniseries until 1984, when it was scheduled during the Olympics and it got a big audience.
25:21 - "Need somebody to translate their language. All this writing on here, you gotta figure out what that means." - From what I can see, it's just random letters. The large one on the bottom with the slanted writing appears to say GH L. The smaller writing above that doesn't seem to conform to the Visitor alphabet, at least not that I can see, although it does look like some of the characters may be upside down.
When this came out, it was about a year or so after I'd read that people were working on an adaption of the novel Childhood's End, so when I saw the first TV ad which showed the motherships, that was the first thing I thought of. It wasn't, although they did finally make a miniseries of the novel a few years ago.
I loved this miniseries, and a year later, when they re-aired it before showing The Final Battle,I actually borrowed a VCR from a family friend so that I could record it. My family didn't have a VCR yet, but I figured that we'd get one eventually, and I'd have the whole thing on tape for when we did. Little did I know that things like this would eventually be released on DVD.
The Final Battle is pretty good, although the ending is pretty cheesy, and a bit of a cop-out.
As for the series, they didn't have the budget of the miniseries, so corners were cut. Use of laser weapons was kept to a minimum, and they dropped the Visitor voice effect without any explanation, allowing Visitors to perfectly pass as humans. It started out OK, but got sillier as it went along. It did have most of the stars of the miniseries though.
So cool to revisit this great mini-series (& still holds up). Hmm, who's my favorite character?... Robin Maxwell! ha, jk. I think your disdain for her was universal. Although you gotta give the writers credit for not going the simpler route of making her more likeable. I remember liking Martin's character, & definitely Juliet Parish. Looking back, Faye Grant walked so that Gillian Anderson can run
Yep. Same body. Skinny girls suck.
i was a kid when this came on TV here in Scotland in the 80s. it was talk of the school ..everybody was hooked on it .. the original mini series and V the final battle mini series was shown on consecutive days here so didn't have to wait between shows. Was and still is my Fav Scifi series. my fav was Diane i had a crush on her lol
As a kid, I really found girls my age attractive. I didn't like any of the "old women" on this show.
Martin's probably my favorite character in the whole series, I like characters that straddle the line
I was saying that too about Martin. But I don't think of him "straddling the line"-he was always a good guy
Hear hear! Him & Tyler will always be my fave characters.
Yep. I used to b him when we played at "V" as a kid. Does anybody else notice his voice is so similar to Jason Miller's?
@@danielesteve8359 Who is Jason Miller?
Martin was in the cockpit for the first Airplane movie and as a flight controller in the 2nd one!
I remember seeing this when it first aired on tv!! 1983....I was 9 years old. Kids everywhere were spraying the letter 'V' on walls all over the place!! 🤣🤣🤣🤣
Man, I would have got in SO MUCH trouble if I tried that! But I remember talking about each episode next day in school. Even some of the cooler teachers were into it
These were on when I was in 4th and 5th grade and I was OBSESSED with them. I’m so glad you guys are reacting to them and that Mrs Movies enjoyed this first miniseries as much as she did. Can’t wait for The Final Battle and hope you guys check out the regular series some day. It’s not the best but it has some fun episodes.
It actually still holds the record for the most watched television event, next to the finale of MASH. It was 13 years before INDEPENDENCE DAY. It was truly one of the best works to span the tv screen ever. It caused a resurgence in mini series as not long after this came THE NORTH AND THE SOUTH and THE WINDS OF WAR, all based on the success of this epic.
When this first aired. I was in 6th grade and it was broadcast the week of the 6th grade camping trip. Had to make sure my parents taped this while I was gone for a few days. First thing I did when I got back was watch this.
We were kinda lucky in the UK when we finally got to watch V , we had the original series & the final battle all in one week, it was epic! I didn't realize until recently that they were separate series.
My favorite characters are definitely the twins 😛👽
Yeah, it blew my mind when they mentioned in the reaction this was the end of the first series.
We had to wait a whole year in Canada (and I assume the States)
V and Blake's Seven were my favorite in my younger days .
A girl I know has Diana as her favorite character in V series. I told her once not to disregard Julie Paris, as you have to respect the character for the task she's got ahead is not an easy one at all, and she stands for it. Diana is cool as a character, but Julie Paris eans our respect with every episode.
Huge V fan. Watched the show, read all of the novels, collected the comic book series, have the trading cards and was a member of several fan clubs. I agree with those that said you should skip the weekly series.
You're an inspiration as a fan. I purchased several of the books and the DVDs but you have so much more than me. Did you purchase any V movie posters or meet any of the actors?
Each laser blast cost $1,000 to create.
And they still stand up to anything cgi can do after all this time. And that sound.. iconic.
on bluray it beats any cgi fake of today
I remember them saying that in the commentary on the DVD. They were joking and counting the dollars with each blast. To be fair, the effect were top notch, and that sound effect is very iconic.
Worth it. Way cooler than nowadays crappy CGI. Our brains can tell !
This series was an instant global hit. I was a kid when it first come out. I was fascinated and wanted to be an alien making fake skin with glue and my mother's make up to rip it off my face... Fun times 😊
Please watch all the series of this amazing show.Classic
You might be interested to find out that the original concept for this show's direction was to produce a 'series of mini-series' (perhaps two a year), in order to prolong the overall story, and insure the production values remained high. NBC wasn't terribly keen to this idea, and attempted to have them wrap up the story with 'The Final Battle'... The show remained popular, and NBC, in it's infinite wisdom, commissioned a weekly series, with a reduced budget, that ended up lasting a season, and ending with a cliffhanger...
Bonus fact - Jane Badler went on to be a part of the IMF, in the 1988 'Mission: Impossible' revival...
The format you describe is how we watch TV now. Very forward thinking. I’m sure NBC was afraid of the new format failing.
I tuned into every episode of the TV series. So did my friends. Real in person watch parties back then.
These first two episodes were one creative team. The team changes for the next two episodes (which I think are the best that V ever got), the action is punchier and some great new characters are added. They also added a far better theme song riffing on John Carpenter's synth music.
One thing I adore in this episode is where the camp is being attacked and Julie stands in the centre shooting at Diana's ship which parallels perfectly the opening scene in episode one where Donovan is filming the resistance fighter doing exactly the same thing against the helicopter. A neat mirror of two resistance leaders staring down an indominatable enemy. Julie rocks.
But yeah... episodes 3 & 4 are amazeballs !
So what bout 5 there were 3 episodes for The Final Battle
cant say final battle better than orignal mini series going by more fights and laser blasts in final battle etc both are good original was shot in widescrean 16.9. weres final battle was shot in 4/3 original miniseries had better stereo sound to final battle. both are good but cant say 1 is better than other as having more fighting and killing makes it better which it does not .
I watched this when it came out and was lucky enough to have a vhs recorder. I loved it so much. It is a show I have loved introducing it to my families next generation who also loved it.
The remake wasn’t to bad but they ended it too soon. The weekly original series just didn’t know how to do it right. They should have stayed with what worked and not make it like any other series back in the day.
The Final Battle is great you’ll both enjoy it. There was also comics and several books. I read them all. I was a fanatic. Glad new generation is watching it! Thanks for sharing love watching you two
This got real when they introduced the visitor "traitor".
Watched this when it aired new on network TV and, I still love it. Both mini series were great "A", while the TV series was about a letter grade below at a "B". But the TV series was still, a lot of fun to watch each week (smile...smile).
I could not just do Part 1 last week so I waited until you put out Part 2 to watch these. It is so very good! I LOVE Willie and have always wanted more of him and Harmony.
This is my favorite part of the original 2-part mini-series. We learn what the Visitors plans are for the planet. And we get the formation of the Resistance against the aliens. I always loved Mike and Julie's first meeting.
Already looking forward to the start of "V: The Final Battle" next week. And don't forget about the 1985 one season tv show that's a follow-up to "The Final Battle", and the 2009 2 season reboot. 😊
It blew my mind when they said this was the end of the first series. I remember watching it all on 5 consecutive nights when it was shown on uk tv. It was never shown as 2 separate series over here. Just seems natural for it to be one series as it’s one story.
@@jgmediting7770 In Canada I think we got to see it when it first aired just like those guys from the States
When it first aired in the UK it was on at 11-30pm so I taped it most of the time as I had to be up early for school
Bonnie Bartlett reading that letter... oh God. Not even Jodie Foster gets close.
One of my favorites as a kid. Thanks for the reaction.
🐸 "We are your friends."
Series creator/director/writer/producer Kenneth Johnson also gave us: Six Million Dollar Man, Bionic Woman, The Incredible Hulk .
I live in the in the foothills on the outskirts of LA, and it's fun to see space battles happening in what is quite literally my own backyard! The San Gabriel Mountains still look the same today!
Do you think a resistance movement is realistic to be based out there?
@@CannonRaw It's part of the union rules. All resistance movements have to take place within 30 miles of the intersection of Beverly and La Cienega boulevards or else the resistance fighters have to be paid a per diem.
Great show. These are the best reaction shots ever from the woman on the left.
In the sequel novel that Kenneth Johnson wrote in 2008 the Leader's enemy, the Zedti, did reach Earth and helped us but it was heavily hinted that they might be even worse than the Visitors. The Zedti are an insectoid race evolved from different species of insects. They do not wear a skin like the VIsitors but do look somewhat human. This was supposed to become a new TV series set roughly 20 years after the VIsitor's arrival but it was scrapped in favour of a reboot/remake.
That's fucking tragic because the V reboot sucked ass! Almost anything would have been better.
@@benjauron5873 I tried watching it several times but although the production values were good the story was incredibly bad. In the second season they added Diana hoping it would boost ratings and they even added Marc Singer in the last episode but it was cancelled in the end.
Next try Alien Nation and The Hidden for excellent 80s alien movies
The Alien Nation TV series is also very good.
It's funny that the idea that water is rare, considering Hydrogen is the most abundant element of the universe, and Oxygen is also pretty common.
A lot of sci-fi did that. The aliens from Planet X in Godzilla vs Monster Zero wanted our water too.
Actually all the cientists in this primitive world think life is extremely rare. I am convinced is quite the opposite, and it's not because I saw clearly near an UFO un 1984.
It's not common on a planetary level.
When i was 10 (In 1984) , every kid on my street was talking about this show one day, and I missed the 1st episode (luckily a friend VHS'd it so I got to see it) They broadcast 5 episodes in a row to counter other channels covering the 1984 L.A. Olympics, for people who didn't like sports... We got British tv in Dublin (but not all over Ireland in 1984), we also only had 6 channels in 1984 so everything got watched by massive numbers of people! (4 British channels and 2 Irish ones)
Without giving too much away, the V series they made after this that aired here in the late 80's was poor as best I recall, and cheap because the aliens had the same voices as humans but the original 5 episodes are pretty cool! It actually holds up better than I imagined. This would count as educational today maybe!
"Godzilla was always a good dad." ❤ love this!😅
And that tongue action! 😅
I was only 6 when it first came out in the uk, it gave me nightmares for months, but seeing again i still think its creepy, i think you still watch the 19 episode series there are some great episodes to watch.
Looking forward to your reaction to ghe final battle 😊
18:51 True, in Delta Quadrant they became race called Voth.
27:16 water/ice is not rare, it's really common. They could have just stolen Europa. Who would notice?
It's been so long since I've watched this, but I think my favorite characters were Willy, Ham and Julie.
V the final battle was really really good!!!!
I loved this when it came out, I have all the movies and tv series, novels and comics
This was great watching on tv when I was a kid!
Think about 60 million people watching this and v the final battle. Thats INSANE!
In a nation of 280 million or so
I have 2 comic books of V series. Originals issue 16 and 17. 6$ on ebay :) Great series thou. Great reaction!
Great show. I remember it well. There were even comic books.
I was 11 and a huge fan of the two miniseries but was aware that the tv show was a huge drop in quality. There was also a comic book that they tried to tie into the series. The problem was the comic would come out once a month and there were four episodes of the show between each comic. The comic would have a story going and then so much would change with a month of the tv show, characters would die, the resistance would move their base, so the the comic would have to just drop everything they had been writing.
32:55 That's the whole point. At the first scene, you think that guy's insane. Then you take his journey, and you're right there with her.
V The Final Battle... THE Final Destination... Friday the 13th the FINAL CHAPTER! lol It NEVER ends! lol
V started out as a WWII drama in the 1970s. Then when Star Wars became a huge success network producers decided to make it a sci-fi movie, though a lot of the Nazi parallels are still present.
Too many favorite characters. Julie, Donovan, Elias, Abraham, Martin, and Willie. Robin and Daniel can die at any time.
7:56
Humans working together.. It's about time. 😏
They haven't met Ham Tyler yet.
Ham Tyler is the cousin of Porkins from Star Wars. He's also Kevin Bacon's father! Hehe! Sorry, I'm just making that up

This is amazing 🤩 I hope you do decide to do this first few episodes of the TV series
There were even a series of books put out.

That car in the beginning is a Fiat Spyder 124 and is a FUN little car to drive! I had one in the 80s and just about drove the wheels off! Peppy little engine, leather interior and real wood dash and steering wheel.
I saw this miniseries on tv back in the day. Q13 tv station played this miniseries, as well as David Lynch's Dune (in mini series form), and Shaka Zulu every year.
I was always confused about how this was released on home video though. When I watched it on tv it was just V the miniseries. It played every night for five days. When I finally looked for it to buy, there was of course V miniseries AND V Final Battle. This has two parts and I believe you said Final Battle had 3? So maybe it was just shown all in miniseries form where I lived. I remember seeing the answer to the girl and visitor getting it on when I watched it. So maybe it wasn't quite such a cliffhanger for us.
But who knows maybe it was just played on tv like that after all of it was released originally. And that maybe was when I first saw it. I kinda remember a tv series existing but don't member much from it.
I've always liked this series, but it's heartbreaking that it has so much resonance for current world events.
I agree that you don't need to watch the TV series, it had a much lower budget (the aliens ride horses rather than travelling the nifty craft) and it finished on a cliffhanger. And it got pretty silly.
I thought the remake was oddly slow and unfocused compared with this, and seemed oddly fixated on the evils of socialism rather than the existential danger of aliens eating us.
Back for some more V!! Still remembering Mr. Movies dramatic V!! he did with his arms.. 🙅♂️ LOL!!
The great enemy of the Visitors is an alien insect race called the Zedti. The Zedti were supposed to show up in the second V miniseries to pose a threat to both humans and Visitors upon their arrival, but after Kenneth Johnson left the production after the first V miniseries, that plotline was scrapped and replaced for V: The Final Battle.
Johnson wrote a book called the second coming, you should go read that if you want to know what Kenneth’s “actual” plan was for the second mini series.

Mrs. Movies fighting the tears.
You asked if anyone here remembers when this came out. I do! Apparently it wasn't released in Britain until the Final Battle was made. Well, in Canada (and the US I'm sure) there was a year wait between the Original and the Final Battle. I remember the wait was only second to Empire Strikes Back/Return of the Jedi for unbearable cliffhanger! I'm not going to say what happens (I don't know if you will read this, but if so, I won't spoil anything), but I will tell you my thoughts before the Final Battle came out: I thought the enemy of the visitors would arrive, and I tried to picture what the natural enemy of a lizard would be. I just want to say you'll have to watch to see if that happens. One thing you did comment on once, but didn't really say much about is the human bullets. From what we've seen, they aren't very effective against the aliens. Knowing that as a kid, and the cool spaceships and stuff, I just couldn't see a way for humans to win (We also know that missiles and junk don't work against the mother ships)
