This is a positive and uplifting song and video. I loved the multi-cultural element. If we all come together and try to find our common bonds between us, life will be better for all of us.

America is at a strange and unique tipping point here in the surreal world of 2020, with COVID-19 wreaking collective havoc on our health, daily lives and the economy, a reckoning on racial issues - and people at political odds, taking an us vs. them stance like never before. Under these circumstances, it may be an unusual time for an up and coming contemporary roots/blues/Americana artist like Joee Corso to roll out a song trying to unify us with compelling reminders of the good things and common values we share as Americans. Some may think we’re sadly past the point where a Lee Greenwood type “God Bless the USA” song could strike a chord as it did post 9/11. But truly, now more than ever before, we should be thankful that Corso is taking the bold step of doing just that with his heartfelt and rollicking new anthem “An American Thing.”
On a personal level it’s very easy to understand why the multi-talented singer/songwriter would include a beautifully inspirational line like “And one thing I can tell you that makes us great is our belief in the American Dream.” Released in May, Corso’s debut album Only A Man is his dream come true, his way of declaring, after some 30 years experiencing the close calls and near misses as a musician in Los Angeles, that it’s never too late to pursue (and achieve) a lifelong dream. His debut single “We Gone” has recently received Billboard adds on numerous stations, and is being promoted to Triple A, Alternative and Country radio. As someone who has pursued and is now living his own American Dream, he is uniquely qualified to share the meaning and value of that with “An American Thing.”
Produced by and featuring the bluesy guitar of two time Grammy winner Paul Brown (who also produced Corso’s album), the immediately infectious, freewheeling, roots-rocky track finds the singer perfectly weaving his own colorful life experiences as a child and adult with the universal realities that all Americans, should they choose to transcend their differences, can all powerfully relate to. In the first verses, he brings the deepest soul influences in his voice to a childhood drive through NYC in his grandpa’s LTD, listening to war stories and learning about the sacrifices soldiers have made for our freedom. In the second and third verses, he sings of visiting beautiful places in all 50 states (even haunted ones!), and paying homage to soldiers at Veterans’ cemeteries.
Each impactful personal narrative leads us to the rousing, high spirited chorus that reminds us of our common purpose - and our proven ability to get through even the proverbial darkest times when we choose to come together, no matter our race or creed. Joee lays it out for those of us who are tired of being frustrated and have ears to hear: “There’s something about those stars and stripes/ That pulls us together through the darkest night/ Don’t matter if you’re brown, black or white/It’s a state of mind/ It’s a point of view/ It’s a matter of pride in the red, white and blue.” The final line of the chorus is a pointed symbolic reminder of the freedom that has always defined us: “Like hearing that liberty bell ring/It’s an American thing.” It’s the kind of reassurance we need more of now, and Joee’s straightforward reminders and ultimate sense of hope should and must ring loud and clear in the coming months.
Helping Joee bring his vision - and this crucial and very timely message - to life are a batch of veteran musicians who have worked their gritty, rhythmic and melodic magic for numerous legends. These include mandolinist and guitarist Davey Johnstone (Elton John, Alice Cooper, Meatloaf), bassist Kenny Gradney (Little Feat, Carly Simon, Delaney & Bonnie), drummer Tony Braunagal (Bonnie Raitt, Rickie Lee Jones, Taj Mahal) and keyboardist Ben Babylon, son of the late Guy Babylon, who was Elton John’s keyboardist for 20 years.
