I loved your video. Your teaching technique is very friendly and the material is easy to understand. It was also very cool that you started with the bass side. I do have two small comments. Not everyone knows what a “full step” and a “half step” means when it comes to the Stick. Next. I would have liked to have seen the melody fingering chart twice. The first time was when you explained the melody progression. Then when you played the progression it would have been very helpful to see the chart again. The lesson was fun and easy to understand. Thank you for your time and don’t stop.

For the beginning, we wanted to get people playing and having fun with the instrument before getting into too much theory. But we will cover those topics in future videos.
Oh my goodness, Mark. I have followed you both forever and just received my first Chapman Stick (wenge Grand Stick, stickup with classical tuning) in January after a 2 1/2 year wait. I am slowly getting started in my learning path and am so thrilled that you are offering such guidance! Thank you!
Amazing tutorial video! Very simple way to explain the main common chords and to help starting with hand independence melodically. Please keep building the knowledge base with more videos 👏
How wonderful to do a tutorial! If I could afford one of these instruments, I would be on this! I do play around with guitar, but this is more like playing a piano on your lap, lol!
With the tuning and the two hand tapping it definitely is a bit more similar to how you would play a piano than guitar. It is an investment, but they hold their value very well. You can sell a used Chapman stick for about the same price as a new one.
@@acethetaof course he counts! but he was teaching at the same time so he's parallel as opposed to filling the hole He does , understandably, seem to have to take breaks to tend to his performance work and I don't see him doing a lot of the kind of smaller instructional videos like this (there's stickology of course) absolutely not a criticism, just the realities of his particular workflow and responsibilities to attend Not saying Mr Howard is/was the ONLY instructor, but I think most wld agree there's a hole so more resources is helpful the diversity is helpful as well (no West side story-esque 3 vs 4 finger rumble plz ;D )
There is very few Chapman stick teachers, that’s for sure. Also we are teaching the way that we like to play ourselves, very melody driven. For those Chapman stick players that are looking for funky bass lines and jazz, these might not be the right videos😁
Nice to see a tutorial, even if I have no intention of ever playing a Chapman stick myself. Those basic chords go way beyond pop music, though. I was hearing Pachelbel's Canon throughout your whole video. Reminded me of Rob Paravonian's "Pachelbel Rant". 😉
Those are the famous four chords used in most pop music, it happen used in classical music as well back in the early days. Definitely similar court progression to Canon in D:)
I think it's awesome you're doing tutorials! Your channel introduced me to the Chapman Stick and it immediately became my favorite instrument. With the different styles of Chapman Sticks varying in the number of strings, voices, etc. which model is the most common or versatile?
Welcome aboard! We play the 12-string Grand Stick in matched reciprocal tuning. The standard Chapman stick comes as 10 string, but once you understand the tuning system to strings don’t make it more difficult. I definitely prefer having those extra two strings. There’s also an alto Stick which is tuned much higher and goes more in the range of a violin. It’s beautiful, but it doesn’t cover those nice lows on the bass side. There’s also a 8-string bass model, I don’t know too much about that one. I would recommend the 12 string grand Chapman stick. With 7 1/2 octaves it has almost the same range as a piano and therefore can cover most notes that you would ever want to play. For a wooden Chapman stick there is a very long wait at the moment. But they also produce the 12-string Railboard (basically an Aluminium Chapman Stick), with that one the wait is much shorter. I personally prefer the feel and warmth of the wooden ones. You can always get in touch with Stick Enterprises for more detailed information :) That’s their website: stick.com

Unfortunately not, long nails are not very useful when playing the Chapman stick, it’s all based on tapping, no picking or strumming

How is the sound produced? The strings are not pulled, seemingly
It’s a two-handed tapping instrument, so you just tap the strings against the frets :)
what are you using there for a belt hook there, i like how it hangs lower off your waist
I’m actually just using my belt. I loosen it up a little bit when I play and sit.
