My OLD SCHOOL Mack Fire Engine VS A BRAND NEW Pierce Pumper

  • I bought a 1977 Mack CF-600 from the Arcadia, KS fire department for $3,000. Today we're going to compare it to a Pierce pumper that's 43 years newer! The concept hasn't changed much but the technology and functionality has improved by leaps and bounds. It was amazing to get to tour the new truck and see how far we've come from the 70s. Plus their both still powered by massive diesel engines!

My parents purchased a house directly across from a fire station in Beverly, Massachusetts when I was 10 years old (1970). That gigantic brick building filled with gigantic red trucks was a little boy's dream. The guys always had time to answer our questions and entertain us. That was until the call came in and the loudspeaker started buzzing and in my mind, they went off to have fun. It wasn't until many years later did I realize being a fireman or police officer was dangerous. Thanks for this video and double thanks to all the men and women who protect and save us no matter how bad the situation.

I love the fact that the 1991 Mack tanker trucks my department has, have many of the exact same parts as the 1977 Engine, such as the turn signal lever, door latches, pedals, light switches, etc. I guess Mack found/made parts they liked and then continued making trucks with them for decades. Also with the alternator not charging, at least with our Macks, you have to rev the engine above 1200rpm breifly for the alternator to kick in.

As a volunteer firefighter emt I can tell you older rigs vs new rigs.
Older rigs- depending on the rigs it’s a love hate relationship. You like how some of the parts are heavier and better built they don’t go with plastic like on newer rigs.
Bad part a lot of older rigs are often worn out
Newer rigs-they have typically bigger engines so if you got more gear and more stuff you can run a little faster. Plus better pump and more modern features.
Bad part- a lot of modern trucks have sensors and stuff like that burn up or go bad or needs recalibrated. So you I tell everyone that buys a new engine keep the old engine at least a year until you can work out the problems on the new one.

Pierce started as an aftermarket truck body builder that got into to fire apparatus by supplying bodies for other manufacturers such as W.S. Darley. They originally started producing mainly rural type apparatus for the market in their region of Wisconsin using Darley pumps. FWD in Clintonville, WI purchased Seagrave fire apparatus in the early ‘60’s giving up their Waterous pump contract. Pierce was able to use Waterous pumps and started national sales. The quality of their product was their advertising and they became a major player. Mack built an excellent truck, but a not so great fire apparatus body. Your Mack needed a new body by Custom Fire Apparatus when it was 12 years old. They slowly dwindled out of fire apparatus. Enjoyed the video👍

SO cool to see what a new engine has! So much more room, and storage. Oh man, that 1916 Seagrave though - that is gorgeous! I love the evolution of the equipment.

I like JR videos a lot. But sometimes I wonder how much technology we need in certain places. To me, the use of technology for the sake of it just drive prices up and make trucks/cars/tractors more "fragile" as more and more things can break and go wrong. You have to consider these trucks sit around a lot and when they go somewhere they don't go that far. For a similar issue, check out the fight farm tractor owners are having with John Deer and others about technology in the tractors. In a recent JR video you talked about using your great computer to diagnose the many other computers in the car, but "if the failure is mechanical the computer can't help"... :-) We have added computers and sensors everywhere, we now need another computer to diagnose all the computers and sensors in there, and many times they CAN'T help.. :-) "The old truck the A/C was broken"... well, they can be fixed you know... IMHO...

They were going to sell it to someone not local when they retired it about 10 years ago. My Dad, being on the department himself decided to buy it and use it as a parade/show truck. Was very sentimental as both my grandfathers had driven the truck when it was in service. Mechanical Everything and double clutch transmission. Leaned to drive stick on it at 13. Had an 80's Mack Engine from Maine as well, but sold it to another fire truck enthusiast who was going to use it as a parade truck. Curious what your plans are for the truck?

JR, the price of that LED light package on that 2020 could buy a fleet of your firetrucks. LOL.

For those of us with "long" military careers...there's this weird reality that we're coming up on the 20th anniversary of 9/11. Looking back...everything is centered around that day...pre-9/11 is "ancient history." Post-9/11 is the world in which we live... 😕🤔

You won't do 50 years old with a Pierce, but with a Mack, no problem!👍

Got that right! The Mack face is SO much better looking than that Pierce.

When I looked at the number on back of Engine ( 82) does anyone Remember the great book by Dennis Smith ( Bronx) NY
Report from Engine company #82. It was what FDNY FF called the War years. I read the book many times. I love it when I see Engine company use that Number 😊
That book is a must read for all FF. Dennis Smith went on and started the Magazine
FIREHOUSE with great menu dinner cooking the FDNY guys did as favorite dishes. In The Bronx at that time in the 1970s the bad kids in NYC would throw bricks at the engine coming down the narrow streets. It actually KILLED some NY fire Fighters when they rode on tailboard or on side of Ladders or engines
The ARSON fires were out of control back then, and engine company #82 and #85 were at one time the busiest Fire Rigs in all of America. Mostly lots of pull box FALSi alarms.

So the old firetruck was a 'Seagrave Ferrari F1 V12 Aperta'? I dig it. I think it's awesome Matt from Demolition Ranch made a fire truck, Angry Cops bought a fire truck, and WatchJRGo bought a firetruck and is going to make it a mobile refueling truck for rally's. Make a small fortune. Pump gas, have spare tires, snacks,...
