Man, I like your thought process of making things work. A little ingenuity goes a long way. I have watched the end product video. Well done. Thanks friend. Have a wonderful July 4th weekend.
great video, the "rothco" lid is what led me to the stanley cup and lid that i use.. i have a few U.S. GI canteen cups as well. dont no why its so hard to find a lid for those things..
Ha ha --- I carried my GI cup into the Army store to check the fit of that exact lid! The guy there said "yes, it will fit... That's what they're made for"... He was surprised when it didn't fit! It did fit the Rothco knockoff cups though.
+Carolina Chris Outdoors I watched a few vids just now on how to mod it to fit. Pretty simple process of flattening the lip but of course I have to do mine with a personal twist, lol. Thanks for watching brother
I have heard that the Rothco lid doesn't fit most canteens, and now I see that it's true! Hopefully you can get it to fit or be able to return it. I haven't gotten a lid for mine specifically because I hear it's difficult to find the exact lid that'll fit it.
this lid can be pretty easily mod'd to fit and Hiram Cook has a video of what he did to the same lid (I watched it last night). with simple tools like pliers and a hammer. I paid $4 from BudK.com so its prob worth having if you have a canteen cup. Morgan ive seen your capabilities and im sure you can make it work. I have faith in you, lol :-)
I can make it work better by bending the edge over a vice -anvil edge but I went ahead and ordered a new one from the Canteen Shop as they're on sale at the moment for $3. I will keep the other one in a stash box for future use, if I ever need it. Sometimes these mass produced items aren't always what they're suppose to be. I had bought Canteen shops top also, but it didn't fit my Stainless military replica cooking pot either. I still have it, too. I can almost see myself getting their cooking pot and canteen someday, maybe. The one's I'm using holds 34 ounces in the canteen. Theirs holds 39 ounces but mine is half the price, new. So many choices out there. Thanks.
good video, i've just done video on the rothco lid modifying it to fit the bcb cup. i do wonder what the lid is meant to fit as i thought it was made to fit the gi cup. But got to be happy with the price and it will fit with a couple of tweaks. ATB Karl
ha, your right about that. it says on package that this lid only fits the rothco mil-style cup so the people selling them should let the customers know that
Nice gear, brother! Look froward to your series and you are exactly right, many people cannot afford the high end gear. I know you will fix that lid up but would it have killed Rothco to make it a tad bigger to fit the standard USGI canteen cup?? You never know about gear from different makers. Great stuff, my friend! -Dave
+HighCarbonSteel Love right? If you think about the gear we used when we were kids none of it was high end and it got the job done. And I couldn't agree more about the lid. How many more would they sell if they made it to fit?
Hi John, as Dave of "high carbon steel love" speaks highly of your channel and I can see why. Nicely done. I have been dealing with a few similar issues concerning Rothco and USGI gear/canteen cups. Your video explains it very well. I was wondering where you where able to grab a stove for only $4? That is what I need to complete a first cook kit, but the price levels for the stove has been absorbent. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.
I took a hammer and flattened the outer edge on a metal table (a 2x4 would prolly work too), so it fits pretty good and the inner part keeps it from sliding off. Not a snap fit but I'd rather have the lid lift off easy anyway.
It sharpened up very well but I havnt had time to put it thru any paces. The add said it is stainless steel but the the blade is stamped high carbon steel. Before I sharpened it I hit the head on the side of the eye with a hammer a few medium/hard whacks to see if it would shatter. I didn't want to do the effort of sharpening it and then brake it as soon as I hit something. It did not shatter or leave any dents so that's something I guess

Thanks brother. I love problem solving and making things fit my needs better so this was a fun project

Brother, I love my Stanley too and you sure are right about those elusive lids, lol
Nice buys John. Sounds like a good series! Have a good'nnn
+geargriden19 thanks brother I hope you have a good n too
Good stuff SJ! Lots of companies making canteen cups, all a little different. No worries though. See you in a couple weeks!
heck ya! it's almost time for the blade show WOOT WOOT

I know you'll be able to tweak that top. Cool hatchet and fairly cheap also. Great idea with survival gear my friend.
+De Eagle I fixed it the next day. I put up a video right way to show what I did
Ran into the same issue on my Rothco as well as the lid being mis-stamped out of the mold. One end is almost flat.
rainbowhiker that sucks. is it trashed or have you come up with a way to make it useable

thanks for the shout out boss. my lid does not fit perfect but it gets the job done.
+RANDOUGH SURVIVOR I did a quick follow up vid where I just used pliers to flair out the lip a little and it fits way better on the GI cup

the package says it only fits the rothco mil-style canteen cup. I will come check out your video after work today. thanks brother
Good stuff! They should make all cups and lids the same. Haha that would make it much easier.
ha, your right about that. it says on package that this lid only fits the rothco mil-style cup so the people selling them should let the customers know that
Yea, that seems logical.

budK.com and I really like Dave. he's such a great guy
Thank You, I will check out their website and build my canteen cup kit.
I figured it would fit the gi cup perfect. I have the maxam set up.
+RANDOUGH SURVIVOR it was your experiments that made me want to play with one. I have some ideas I have to try
Good deal, I had to form mine a little to get it just right. I'll prolly end up buying another set. Cool video
+BlackRifle Survival thanks brother, I'm sure it will work with some bending but it's disappointing that it doesn't just fit
I took a hammer and flattened the outer edge on a metal table (a 2x4 would prolly work too), so it fits pretty good and the inner part keeps it from sliding off. Not a snap fit but I'd rather have the lid lift off easy anyway.
That's a good point about "easy lid removal". It would not be good to have to pry the lid off of a boiling pot of stew or water
Yep, that could turn out bad.
NO FIT! Cool toys Bro!
+MI Timberwookie lol, NO FIT! Thanks bro
Bummer. Looking forward to the tweaking.
+Nathan4071 me too, lol. Thanks brother
