Back then all Germans used to sit in front of their tv every day at eight pm to watch the "Tagesschau" (daily news). It was even considered very rude to call someone on the phone during Tagesschau time.
There was recently a documentary on Loriot's 100th birthday. His real name is Bernhard-Viktor “Vicco” Christoph-Carl von Bülow. He was looking for a unique stage name for himself and found it in his family coat of arms, which depicted a small bird. This bird is an oriole (a bird from the blackbird family) and in French the bird is called “Loriot” and because the word is French it is pronounced without a “T” at the end.

You just need a few words, and the whole comes back - it is in the literal sense "iconic", in the sense a tiny bit expands a whole universe. The same effect is e.g. with "The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy". When by chance two fans meet, they just need to throw words at each other and burst out laughing. And the people around them just think "WTF??!".

Loriot or Vicco von Bülow was basically a whole show in the 70s. There were not only cartoons there, but also game scenes. How, for example, just straightening one picture can ruin an entire waiting room. Or in the romantic restaurant, on a date, with the help of a napkin, a piece of spaghetti wanders around on your face. The announcement of the scenes was made on a Baroque Sova with a black background.
3:18 In the 1970's, where the cartoon is from, TV in Germany ended at about 1 am with late news, so the couple must be old people that doesn't work anymore.
Loriot was very good in caricature everyday situation. He made a speech of a fictive member of the Federal parliament Very bloated and important sounding without saying nothing at all. He invented an animal that got an entry in a dictionary and so it got also one on Wikipedia. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stone_louse His most famous drawn sketch are two gentlemen disputing in a bathtube I would say. You're right. The smartphone is a little different, but even worse than TV back then. (By the way, the "clap, clap, clap" could have been my father in his later years.)
For your question about who these "writers" are. Simple answer: „Loriot" His real name: „Vicco von Bülow" Full name: „Bernhard-Viktor Christoph-Carl von Bülow"
best sketch ever was "the picture is crooked". that's Loriot himself in that and it is the absolute height of german comedy. edit: tehre were'nt any writers. loriot did it all himself, that's part of the reason why he's so legendary. he also wrote two movies which are complete comedy gold. it strikes a very fine note with germans because it often ridicules the absurd heights we go to to preserve dignity and accuracy.
Loriot was an excellent observer of society. Many, too many people hold on behaviors or traditions or whatever you wanna call it, even if they know their situation is bad and they rather complain about it instead of changing it. The TV program is upsetting you? Why do you watch it anyways? You hate your job? Why not search for another? And so on... "If you want to change something, you find ways. If you don't, you find excuses"
You got the pronounciation almost right: Just don't speak out the final "t": "Lorió". His pseudomym is derived from his (noble) family's coat of arms which shows a bird or more precicely an oriole as a helmet jewel. (de.wikipedia.org/wiki/B%C3%BClow_(Adelsgeschlecht) ) "Loriot" is simply the French translation of "oriole" or how Germans would say "Pirol" (don't ask me why! :D )
Everything was written produced and mostly directed by Vicco von Bülow aka Loriot himself. You should definitely give his real life sketches a try, they are brilliant. Don’t know if they are available with subtitles.
I thought that at the end he would want to call her by her name but he'd forgotten it long time ago because they were watching TV every evening for an eternity instead of talking to each other. But maybe I confused that with another cartoon.
"Loriot - Advent" is a pretty "dark" poem, but very funny. there are several different uploads of it on youtube, and i found none with manually done subtitles, but the following seems to have _mostly_ "acceptable" automatic translations (automatically generated german subtitles -> translate to english) : ua-cam.com/video/-PHvq5iOVTE/v-deo.html you also can find the text of this "poem" on other websites when googling for it, and that might give better translations when fed to a translator instead of youtube-auto-generate/translate, but just to get the right feeling of it, watch it first before reading. even the german wikipedia has a page "Advent_(Loriot)" on this poem (history, analysis, etc) but without the text.
When ever you show LORIOT films or catoons, you must have every time one eye to the little details. Look at the bottle and glass on the floor. All this catoons are like old Disney catoons with thousend of draw picutres by hand. Evrey little move are 20 to 50 picture. There was no kind of amimation possible. Young people don´t now this.
Loriot, when confronted with the claim that his sketches are apolitical, would always reject this claim, stating that, since Germany is a democracy, and the power is supposed to come from the people, satire must be directed against the people, for they hold the power in the country. The other option, he stated, was to direct it against politicians, and admit that we do not live in a democracy.
