As a 'paca owner myself - a quick tip. The right tool for the job would make your life much easier and safer. An alpaca chute is worth every penny (mine is from Light Livestock Company - not connected to them, just very happy with their Chute). Also a dremel with a sanding drum is a far better way to do nails and will help prevent quicking.

Alpacas and Llamas fight by biting each other's legs to the point of true injury so they are very sensitive to touch on their legs and get panicky. Many shearers lay them on their side and stretch their tied legs back and front. Helps them calm down and gets it all done quicker.

From watching other channels that have alpacas, a pregnant one looks like a non pregnant one. One day you go out and find a baby alpaca. Just like magic.

There's a UA-camr mike that professionally shears sheep, alpacas, and llamas. As well as trimming their toes. They recommend laying the alpaca on its side. Tying their front legs together and back legs together. For safety for the animal as well as the owner or shearer. The youtuber is "Right Choice Shearing".

We have 5 alpaca. One is a spitter. We don't get in front of her. You also quickly learn to recognize their preparation to spit - kinda like hawking up a luggi.

When your shearer for the alpaca comes ask them sweetly to trim toenails. They stretch alpacas out on their sides to shear easiest time to trim nails and teeth.

Mike looks like those Alpacas can kick as hard as a small horse! We bred and raised horses and we had one mare who didn't like her right hind leg trimmed. We had a new farrier once and I warned him but she kicked him to the wall of the barn. Thank goodness he wasn't hurt!

Certainly a real task, but you two got it done. My wife use to trim our goats hooves, a little different, but close to the same. Those burs or Cockle burs looks a lot like the burs we get in our cows, but they are a pain to deal with. Anyways, you and Kari did good getting the Alpaca's taken care of. Thanks and I hope you have a good night and Sunday too.

Now that was an interesting procedure! I've not been around Alpaca's so was very interested in how you went about the trimming. I trimmed our English Bulldog's nails but I used Dremel & had to do it in spurts because it heats the nail up quickly but was easier on him than clippers. Great video!

Now i see why most people who raise alpacas trim their feet only when they get shered and they don't get shered standong up. Boy, those ladies did need the nail trim. They have nice fleece. A pregnant alpaca does not show until right before delivery. Some times you may catch a movement on her side.

Those Alpacas can sure kick. Is there is some way of tieing up the leg you are working on? Perhaps you need some leg protection just in case. Cowboy Chaps?
I found a picture of a wooden alpaca chute when I googled it. Perhaps it could be a project for you and Jeff during the 24 hour filming. There are even plans on line at Southwest Llama Rescue, Inc.
